Cabaret Critique

The acting gives the story much personality and is really convincing. The most incredibly played character is Oskar, because he is such a complex child and it’s really hard to make him not stereotypical because he has Autism. The actors really made the story come to live.

The play was very well done and was not dull even though it was catered to a large audience. The musical numbers are very entertaining, and the spectacle, both visual and emotional, is well accomplished. I would recommend this to most children and adults, due to the Christmas themes and general lightheartedness of the play.

My favorite character was the ballet teacher. The actress made great use of the stage and her props. I loved the way she swayed in her fur lined silk robe and how she used her faux cigarette. It really conveyed the life story of the character and made her stand out. It gives her an aura of strength but also a certain feeling of tragedy — as if she had always wanted to become a star. Her beat changes were very distinct throughout the play. Each line was

He really made the audience believe that he was truly in love with Evalina through his expressions and the way he acted around her. I could see in the way he looked at the actress who played Evalina that he admired her and her presence. The actor who played Spunk had a very good singing voice and guitar skills. I really enjoyed watching him act as he was using his real life talents throughout the play. I did believe the characters to an extent. The dialogue was very realistic, but the way some characters delivered their lines was not adequate. On a scale of one to ten, the rating I would give the cast is an 8. The voices and overall acting was a lot better than I expected coming into the play. I cared a lot about what happened to the characters. When Spunk was fighting against Jim Bishop I did not want him to get hurt. When he came out with a wound I felt bad for him. I could also see the fear in Evalina’s eyes when she saw Spunk. The ending made me happy because I wanted Spunk and Evalina to be together and really cared for them. The choreography was blocked very well. The dances were very in sync and the positioning of the actors was successful. There was a lot of time in between scene changes and the directing did a good job of filling this time gap. We perform a show, have a dinner, hold a tricky tray and all the money goes to a child in need. We perform in a banquet hall, on a little stage, in front of hundreds of people, and I love it. They have been doing it for ten years and have helped so many families. The people are super nice and they show you how it all happens.

The characters in this movie were great actors. They acted so realistic that it looked as if it was occurring live from the scene of the action. All of the characters were excellent , especially the women when they got their hair cut off in the concentration camp.

Cabaret was set in the late 1920’s and was supposed to be a satire of the change of thinking and the rise of the Nazi party. Cliff Bradshaw was supposed to represent the Americans and how they had changed their ways of thinking. An example of this from the play was when Bradshaw was trying to convince Sally Bowles to leave Germany with him because of the Nazi Party. On the other hand, Sally Bowles was supposed to represent all of the individuals who did not want to see the changes in the world and those who wanted to be oblivious to what was happening. This is also depicted in the same scenario because Sally had no desire to leave Germany even though some of her fiends were being targeted by the Nazis.

My second favorite character was Julia, Chairwoman of the Cleveland Opera Guild. When she enters in Act II, she is on her way to the show and is wearing a very shiny, extravagant dress. I think that the dress was a bit too much for the occasion. When Saunders sees her, he makes a joke about her dress. The funny part is the way the dress looks. Cabaret (1998) by Joe Masteroff, John Kander and Fred Ebb is a thrilling tale set in pre-WWI Berlin. The first showing of Cabaret on Broadway was in 1966, but an earlier rendition of the play, entitled I Am a Camera premiered in 1951, in London, England (Smith). Each version of Cabaret has differences, the 1998 version specifically has a darker edge than the earlier versions. Cabaret has long been one of my favorite musicals and I felt very honored to get to be a part of CMC’s production. The main theme of the play is adaptation.

The actors and actresses did well in their assigned rolls and I wish I could congratulate them on finishing the run. They worked together very well in all of the group musical numbers regardless of how hard they can be to coordinate at times. If I had to rate this performance of the musical it would get a 9/10. The acting, singing, costumes and costume changes, scenery and of course, the plot, are all wonderful and this is a must see. The only thing lacking was the cues and lighting, the use of the gobos was lacking and there was not as much color change as I would have enjoyed

Throughout the play, I enjoyed the role of music used to set a comic atmosphere and replace the dialogs during comic scenes (e.g. when they chase each other around). I also thought that they made a good use of light to indicate the moment of the day the scene was happening or to set the atmosphere of the scene (e.g. pink colour during the romantic moments). Lastly, I liked the way the play ended. Even though it was a little messy with everyone running after each other off and on stage, and this policeman coming out of nowhere, which really surprised me; I couldn’t think of a better way to end the play.

The play was so well done, and the opening section was somewhat grand considering the fact that actors and actresses played their part and portrayed the characters in a way I could really relate to. I have always like live performances, and one thing the producer of Les Miserables introduced was the orchestra switch their voices between prerecorded and live scenes, this gave the play a sense of immediacy and power.
