Business Issues Within the California Highway Patrol there are many different factors that affect a person's work performance. Motivation or lack of motivation is one way that employee's work performance can be affected. Emotions and moods of the employee can also have a short-term affect on their work performance. It is incumbent for supervisors and managers within the CHP to recognize when they have an employee whose work performance is affected by one of these issues and address them appropriately. The purpose of this discussion board is to provide a response to discussion board Forum 2. Motivation Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory states that motivation is a function of the five basic needs: physiological, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization (Kinicki & Fugate, 2016). An employer that is able to recognize and meet the needs of their employees, the employee will ultimately move through the five levels of Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory until they ultimately achieve self-actualization (Kinicki & Fugate, 2016). When the needs of officers working on the street are not met or do not seem to be met, the motivation of the officers will be affected. Supervisors and managers can encourage their employees to do things such as exercise (Wong, 2016) to help improve their mood, especially during significantly stressful times. Kinicki and Fugate (2016) wrote that emotions are products of our thoughts, behaviors, and experiences. They also wrote about some specific things we can do to manage our thoughts and behaviors to experience more positive emotions: manage expectations, take time to plan and organize, give a gift to other people, deflect partisan conversations, assume people have good intentions, focus on the job in front of you, and end the day with gratitude (Kinicki & Fugate,
Abraham Maslow developed a Hierarchy of Needs (appendix 3) which is used to understand human motivation, management training and personal development. This hierarchy is used to determine the responsibility of employers to provide a workplace environment that encourages and enables employees to fulfil their own unique potential.
Maslow identified that employees have the motivation to achieve certain needs. Once these needs have been achieved the employee will seek to fulfil the next set of needs.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs provides a foundational theory. It states that all employees have some basic needs that must first be satisfied in order to provide the framework for further motivation and empowerment.
The New Jersey State Police does not experience much turnover. However, within a twenty-five year career, a trooper’s attitude, and how that attitude relates to job satisfaction and output can be measured. While a trooper with 10-15 years experience may be distrustful of command staff, junior troopers (those with 1-5 years) are viewed as zealots. Junior troopers are productive and engaged in their field. A trooper’s job satisfaction can be measured by his/her’s perceived organizational support. Job satisfaction has a direct correlation to employee engagement and perceived organizational support.
Abraham Maslow’s theory, Theory of Hierarchy Needs, is a motivational theory in psychology that has a tier model of the five things a human needs. Maslow stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs and that some needs take precedence over others. The five stages, from bottom to top, include Physiological needs( food, water, warmth, and rest), the second stage: Safety Needs ( security and safety), third stage: Belongingness and love needs ( intimate relationships and friends), the fourth stage: Esteem Needs (prestige and feeling of accomplishment), and finally the last stage: Self-actualization ( achieving one’s full potential, including creative potential). The five stage model can be divided into
Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs was introduced in the mid-1940’s by Abraham Maslow; it is one of the most popular theories of work motivation to this day. the theory was originally used specifically in a psychological setting, but was made more popular by Douglas McGregor in the late 1960’s and began to be used by not only psychologists but managers as well (Steers & Porter, 1983). The hierarchy is based on the fact that human beings have needs, Maslow took these needs and separated them into five categories: physiological needs, safety, belongingness or social needs,
Abraham Maslow is a psychologist who had developed the Hierarchy of needs model in 1940-50s, and the Hierarchy needs theory is still being used to day and for understanding the human motivation. In his hierarchy he believes that people are motivated to achieve certain needs. And when a human had fulfilled a person would seek to fulfil the next one. Maslow’s hierarchy needs is concerning the responsibility of service providers to provide a
On November 14, 2017, California Highway Patrol (CHP) Sergeant Jesee Lopez contacted the Merced Multi-Area Gang Narcotic Enforcement Team (MAGNET) and requested assistance with a narcotics/ U.S currency investigation.
Understanding the needs of an individual can keep them motivated and move them to want to attain higher levels of success. Maslow’s theory as you move higher in the level of needs brings out the intrinsic motivation of people. Which aligns with Pink’s (2009) three factors of motivation which are autonomy, mastery, and purpose this will increase employee satisfaction and performance. There were still some unanswered questions I have with the readings we had to do. With Maslow’s Theory, I never did find detailed research on how well his theory worked in a real-world environment. There was plenty of research that used his definition of needs and incorporated them into different leadership styles. Alternatively, there was a focus on specific aspects of his theory, like self-actualization. Fredrick Taylor’s theory was interesting, but why was it part of this course on motivation? I can see the importance of what he accomplished as the father of the scientific method and process improvement, but he did not go beyond the base need of money to motivate workers. His focus was on efficiency within the industrial plants. What about employees that are unwilling to change, you have gone through all the motivational techniques, tips, and tricks, I do not remember anything in our readings covering what to do in these types of
With Maslow’s hierarchy of needs I felt this was an underpinning motivational theory within Babcock skills and learning as it relates to how we as humans operate and what we need implemented or have available to ensure that we remain motivated through our working life.
Abraham Maslow developed the hierarchy of needs theory still remain valid today for understanding human motivation, management training, and personal development. Maslow’s ideas surrounding the hierarchy of needs concerning the responsibility of employers to provide a fulfill their own unique potential are today more
According to Alan Chapman, one of the main theories relating to motivation is “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.” People have needs. A need is a lack of something-something we want (Chapman, 1995). It is imperative that in order to be a successful leader, hence, exemplifying leadership qualities, one must understand the basic foundation of leadership. This foundation is built on knowledge, understanding, and most importantly, the desire to be successful no matter what area or discipline one chooses.
Social needs acquired by such employees include love, acceptance and belonging. They must feel accepted and a sense of worthiness before they can work up to fulfilling other, more difficult needs. The esteem level on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is the need for appreciation and respect. After the other levels of needs have been fulfilled, the esteem needs begin to play a prominent role in motivating behaviour. Theory Y employees will be motivated to gain respect in their organisation by achieving company objectives and by showing management their skills and abilities. The top need desired by such employees is self-actualisation. Maslow himself said;
Maslow 's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology, proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper, “A Theory of Human Motivation”. His hypothesis stated that within every human being there exists a hierarchy of five needs. These needs are physiological: hunger, thirst and shelter; safety: security and protection from physical and emotional harm; social: affection, acceptance and friendship; esteem: self-respect, recognition, autonomy, and achievement; and self-actualization: the drive to grow and become something, achieving potential and self-fulfillment (Maslow, 1954). Maslow is still relevant to managers today. In order to motivate someone a manager must understand what level of hierarchy the person is on and focus on satisfying that level and those above it. The manager must also account for an individual’s intensity, direction and persistence since this also affects how a person attains their goals (Robbins & Judge, 2007).
Per Maslow, these needs which are the run of motivation for an employee to work are arranged in a hierarchical order of increasing importance. This order is “prepotency”. It means satisfied need no longer remains a motivator and only the next greater needs can motivate an employee to perform further. This was later analyzed due to there is no certainty that these needs are consider as a motivation hierarchical order as recommended, therefore
