We all have personal goals to accomplish. Buck in the novel “The Call of the Wild” wished to acclimate to the new setting by becoming the leader of the pack. Jacob Portman in “Miss Peregrine's Home Home for Peculiar Children” worked really hard to find out the secrets his grandfather hid from him, his goal being to crack the code of how he died. In the second book of the series ”Hollow City” , his goal was to keep his peculiar friends safe, keep Miss Peregrine alive, as well as himself. One thing all of these three goals have in common is the common theme of them being able to be surpassed, doing better than what was originally sought out.
The mission Buck in “The Call of the Wild” undertook was to become the leader of the pack. The

The drive to take this mission was to keep his grandfather's legacy alive and to keep his friends safe. The author states, ”[...]; and that one day, like Grandpa Portman, I would do something that mattered.”(Riggs 46). As Jacob becomes more aware of his peculiarness, he will be able to use them more and become more familiar with it. “Then I actually experienced my peculiar ability coming to life.”(Riggs 66). This shows that he knows when the hollows are near, something frightening that is his skill. His skill is helping him recreate his grandfather's legacy, the mission that he is undertaking.
The goal of Jacob Portman in “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”, is to figure out how his grandfather died by piecing the clues in his last words together, and then avoiding the creatures that were in his nightmares for so many years, the hollows. The hollows are terrifying creatures and predators to his kind that only he can see, thus it being his job to protect them. “[...],but as Jacob, inspector of shadows, miraculous interpreter of squirmy gut feelings, seer and slayer of real and actual monsters-and all that might stand between life and death for our merry band of peculiars.”(Riggs 43). This quote really emphasizes the fact that it his his job to protect the peculiars. Jacob works hard to keep his friends safe, because this is what his grandfather did
This heavily contributes to the book because the loop that was set the day before a bomb fell on their beloved home. Which is why at first, Jacob finds the house to be in ruins.
The second time Jacob visits the children’s home, he encounters a group of small children that he recognizes from the pictures his grandfather used to show him. One child asks if he is Abraham, but when they see his face, they are disappointed that he is not, and run away. Jacob runs after them and follows them into a tunnel, but gives up and decides to go home. As he walks through the town
Learning that his mom was having an affair with someone else hit him in the heart hard. He wanted to believe that it wasn’t his mother, that it was someone else, but he couldn’t. He found out when he was gathering flowers for his mother, and then he heard something. He went around to see his mother with another person other than his dad. When they parted from each other they kissed, and Jacob was shocked from this. He was hiding behind a bush when he saw this,“Through the leaves, Jacob caught a glimpse of the man’s face. They didn’t speak, only kissed, and parted”(191). One can assume that he's frustrated at his mom, and probably doesn’t want to talk with her for the day.
We are all born into this world, never knowing what life has in store for us. It’s a journey that we are all not accustomed to, some of us grasp onto life and use its full potential, as others take the high road and use life as a chance of self exploration. The novel, Into the Wild, portrays a college graduate and successful homebody, Jonathan McCandless, taking a life’s journey that not even his parents expected. This character analysis will showcase how even in life, when one was given everything, we all have a choice to make our own path in life. The character analysis will also shine light on McCandless psyche, home life and the psychological theory to the why, behind his self exploration.
Jacob met Miss Peregrine finally! He learns that she is a ymbryme, which means that she can transform herself into a bird and manipulate time to create a safe place for her and her peculiar children. I feel like this book is getting weirder by the second. I really am not into the mythical kind of things in some books, but I still feel like it has a good plot and a good storyline and theme. Ransom Riggs continues to impress me by his writing.
This idea was again brought to my attention in Chapter 19 when Jacob’s grandfather caught wind that Nicole was using the female restroom and he did not believe that that was okay. Jacob’s grandfather then told Jacob that there was only one thing to do about it, which lead Jacob to harassing and even slightly stalking Nicole while at school. Before Paul Melanson interfered and told his grandson what to do to Nicole, Jacob didn’t seem to be an issue, nor did it seem
Whenever Marlena is in danger, Jacob immediately tries to help her as much as he could, even if it means that he might get hurt in the process. When August turns ballistic and tries to hurt Marlena, Jacob intervenes without hesitation: “[August] ends up dragging [Marlena] by the neck as she screams. I launch across the open space and tackle him” (246). As soon as Jacob sees that Marlena is in danger, he tries to help her and rescue her from August. He knows that there are consequences, such as being redlighted or fired, especially because August is his employer. Even with all these known threats, Jacob attacks August anyways. Jacob is willing to defend Marlena from a dangerous August because of his incredible loyalty to her. His loyalty to her also makes him want to ensure Marlena’s safety, so he takes Marlena with him when he leaves the circus: “I can’t leave Marlena… here while I return to Ithaca to write my exams” (318). The only person keeping Jacob from immediately leaving the circus to go back to pursuing his dream of becoming a veterinarian was Marlena. He stays at the circus for a longer period of time to watch over her and eventually takes her back to his home. Jacob’s protectiveness to Marlena leads him to attack people who try to hurt her, and he also does not leave the circus immediately to retake his exams because of
When revealing the secret to her daughter Ellen she wrote, "Ellen, this is a secret you have promised grandmother never to tell. If you ever speak of it to anybody, they will never let you see your grandmother again, and your mother can never come to Brooklyn." The secret that needed to be kept was a secret that only family can keep. No one in Jacob's family would ever have betrayed that information because if they did it might mean the end of Jacob's life.
We are introduced to an eager and naïve Jacob in the initial stages of the novel. However, Jacob is introduced to the cruelties of the world all too suddenly, when the death of his parents is abruptly thrust upon him. It states, “I snap out of my stupor. There are people on that train. It matters not a whit where it’s going because
In the biography Into the Wild written by Jon Krakauer, Chris McCandless makes the decision to try and live in the wilderness. With little food, no communication with the outside world, and dangers around every corner McCandless decides to try and survive. Possible character traits that McCandless had that caused him to make this decision are: thrill-seeker, overconfident, or he was just inspired and wanted to live poor instead of wealthy.
Primarily, when you have schizophrenia you may think of strangers as very vague and “may often think that people are after [you]” (Schizophrenia 1) . In an article called “Schizophrenia” it claims that “the defining factor of paranoid schizophrenia is absurd or suspicious ideas and beliefs. “Delusions of persecution are the most frequent theme” (Schizophrenia 1), ( delusion of persecution is the belief that someone, without any evidence is going to harm him or her or someone else. )this fits Jacob perfectly as he had preposterous ideas and plots to get rid of a “killer”, that he
He realizes that helping his friends will make him a better person. He risks his own life to save his family, Jacob and Oteka run from a lion so the lion can follow Jacob and leave Hannah, Paul, and Norman alone, Oteka yells at Jacob, “RUN!” Oteka said ( McKay 175). Jacob asks, “What is it? What is it?”(McKay 175). This is important because, risking ur life for others makes you look like a good person. He also goes to battle to get food for Norman. This was a really dangerous choice he made. “You-do you fight today?” asked Lizard (McKay 134). Food is a need for Norman, this reaches us that sometimes you have lose to gain something. This shows that Jacob learns from his
For some, the only will for survival was fear of death, and for others it was the deep desire to achieve their own freedom and the freedom of their children, like with Jacobs and her grandmother. Unfortunately, they were often too petrified to attempt to run or fight back for fear of being brutally punished similarly to the others they had seen try before them. With the threat of her children being put to work on the plantation, however, Jacob’s uses her smarts and the support of family and friends to risk it all for her son and daughter’s freedom. She runs away and spends 7 years lying in her grandmother’s attic watching life pass by from a tiny hole in the roof. Although she is permanently disabled, Dr. Flint finally sells her children to Dr. Sands who had promised to free them. However when he gets married and starts to backtrack on his word, she desperately flees to the New York leaving her son to follow at a later time and to reunite with her daughter who has lived, supposedly free, up in the North already with Mr. Sands
Jacob presents a more “freedom” lifestyle but still uniformed at the same time. Even with this modern style of living though, there were rules that may seem unusual to someone living in this time period.
As mentioned before, Jacob is the youngest child of the family. He is fighting for attention from his siblings and his parents almost every day. Most of his art projects are displayed around the house, along with his sibling’s art. He does fight for attention from his
