Calpurnia from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is caring. Calpurnia is caring because when they go out and see the mad dog they run in and try to call everyone and to tell them to shut their windows and doors. “Calpurnia stared, then grabbed us by the shoulders and ran us home” (Lee, pg. 123). This connects to the thesis because this shows that she cares about everyone that surrounds her. Cal is trying to protect Jem and Scout with her body from the dog when Atticus tells Cal to go inside. She tried to block us with her body, but we looked out from beneath her arms” (Lee, pg. 126). This quote goes along with Cal being caring because she puts her own body in front so Jem and Scout don’t get hurt. Cal did not want Atticus to miss the shot
When Reverend Moorehead gives his sermon about Jem and Scout’s misdeeds at the dinner party, Atticus responds by laughing. Just before the dinner, Scout was “baptized” by Jem during one of their games, leaving her wet and naked. On their way home from the lake, they run into Reverend Moorehead, his wife, and Atticus. Calmly, Atticus puts his coat over Scout and tells her, “Go to Calpurnia. Go in the backdoor”(68). Calpurnia quickly cleans Scout up and prepares dinner. At the table, Reverend preaches a sermon about the kids misdemeanor from the incident earlier. After the sermon ends, Atticus leaves the room and instantly Scout thought he was embarresed and upset by their actions, but when she asked, "Is Atticus real upset?", Calpurnia said,
Calpurnia is a character that helps Scout understand why she should treat Walter as an equal. During lunch, Walter pours molasses all over food to Scout’s horror. Because Calpurnia thought “[it shouldn’t] matter who they are, anybody [who] sets foot in this house’s yo’ comp’ny” (Lee 33) the reader and Scout sees that she believes that everyone, no matter their social class, should be treated equally. Calpurnia exposing Scout’s prejudicial manner helps contribute to Lee’s lesson on prejudice by showing how social class should not decide how one is treated. Calpurnia establishes that it does not matter if they are rich or poor, if they are a guest in your house, they should be treated like one.
Though the black community is sad that Tom Robinson was found guilty they are still faithful that Atticus will protect and defend the black community. Bob Ewell is not happy at all with the way Atticus questioned him and his daughter and the way he defended Tom Robinson. Miss Stephanie says that"this morning Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he'd get him if it took the rest of his life"t Jem's reaction to the verdict is that he leaves the courtroom and cries because he didn't think Tom would be guilty and he feels that it is an unfair verdict and he sees the town in an unfair way. I personally thought that this judging was just a way to seem like society was fair by giving a black man a “trial”. However, I think that they were going to say Tom Robinson was guilty either way.
Innocent people, expunged by the viciousness of the world. Starting to develop empathy for others is something that goes along with your maturity level, but a lot of people fail to learn it. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the moral of the story was to show that the mockingbird symbolizes innocence and a lack of empathy.
When you stand in another's shoes it help you understand the world in a different way and allows you to help others. It also allow to feel compassion and empathy for them. The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee has many cases where characters are forced to stand in others shoes and feel compassion for them. To stand in another shoes will help you understand them better.Atticus teaches Scout empathy through fatherly courtroom tactics. "First of all," he said, "if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view ... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." The meaning of the above quote is the importance
Hatred has been around for many years in the hearts of man. For example, even Cane and Able had hatred against each other. But hatred had spread to other people for several reasons, for jealousy, racism and even for being different. Harper Lee expressed much hatred in To Kill a Mockingbird. The era of the 1930’s in the Deep South was where the novel took place. Maycomb County, Alabama was a place of white supremacy. Scout witnessed the problems of racism and hatred of the Maycomb people. In To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee uses Scout’s perspective and Atticus’s experience to express the true hatred and discrimination in a racist community.
Lee and Conolly shows the audience that courage tend to come in diverge forms. One form is physical courage. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus demonstrates courage in a physical sense as he finds himself in a face off with a loose rabid dog, only armed with a shotgun. " For God's sake, Mr. Finch, look where he is! Miss and you'll go straight into the Radley house!
Empathy is what us humans lack of. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Empathy is spread throughout the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I strongly empathize with the characters Jean Louise Finch A.K.A Scout and Arthur Radley A.K.A Boo Radley, because Scout is criticized for the doing of her father while Boo is having rumors spread about him that aren't true. I can empathize with Scout because her dad and even her are getting made fun of.
Title: Empathy in "To Kill a Mockingbird": Walking in Another's Skin In Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird," Atticus Finch imparts a crucial piece of advice to his daughter Scout: "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. " This iconic quote encapsulates the essence of empathy, urging individuals to transcend their own perspectives and empathize with others. To "walk around in the skin" of another character or person means to deeply understand their thoughts, feelings, and experiences by adopting their perspective. This concept of empathy is intricately woven throughout the novel, influencing various characters and their interactions.

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” (Lee 149).
Calpurnia, or “Cal”, was the Finch’s African-American housekeeper and cook. Her being a black, middle-aged woman in a white dominated society, we can already infer she has experienced great racial injustices. Throughout the novel, we see significant and noticeable changes in the main characters, but little development in Calpurnia´s character. Before you discard this essay on what was supposed to be about a chosen character changing due to social and racial injustices throughout the book, give the thesis some thought. Scout is the narrator of the book, therefore we are seeing changes through her point of view; so we only see Calpurnia changing through the eyes of Scout, but they were not in actuality
Do you know what it feels like to be powerless? A white nineteen year old woman named Mayella Ewell Falsely accuses a black man of raping her in Maycomb, Alabama, in the 1930’s, and is rendered powerless, due to being recessive in her social class, race, and gender. She does so in hopes of escaping her abusive father, and a chance to have a better life. Although Mayella is white, she has been shunned by African Americans and other white people. Mayella is a very young woman that does not own anything nice, nor clean, besides geranium flowers. During the 1930’s, men were the dominant sex, as a female, Mayella has to obey her father, Bob Ewell. As a result, Mayella was mistreated and abused.
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.
