Lighting is an essential component of filming and lighting effects illustrate the mood of the scene and in essence also portray the scene. The use of effective lighting in the scenes is essential to ensure that the scene is shot properly and the message is communicated effectively. In this project we have discussed a story, which has a grim message, and thus the lighting effects have all been made accordingly. The story being projected here is the ill effects of drug addiction and the fact that drugs would ultimately lead to death. The projection of the story needs a grim background and hence the lighting effects would all be of a night effect (Brown, 2013).
The first scene that will be shot is that of Calum, the protagonist, in his bedroom

He walks towards the toy and finds a bottle of alcohol. Here the lights would be stronger to illustrate that he has found joy in intoxication, but however in the background a cars noise is heard and the lights are turned on to illustrate a car that is approaching towards Calum. As he bends down to pick up the bottle the car is about to hit him at a high speed (Grodal, 2005). In this scene the sepia effect would be used to illustrate a figure that is carrying a baby in its arm and the lights would be focused on the hooded figure. The symbolic evidence of this scene is death carrying away Calum, who is as immature as a baby and does not know how to differentiate between good and bad. The choice between the toy and the alcohol is symbolic of this fact and this illustrates the mental status of youth today, who are into drugs and alcohol for ‘fun’. The car hits Calum and the lights are turned off. This is the end of this scene and the darkness is representative of the wrong choice that Calum has made.
In this scene bright lights would be used as Calum wakes up in the graveyard for the third time and follows the mystery figure. He is about to reach the figure when suddenly the scene is shifted to his apartment and he is about to put his hand on the door handle. Here bright lights will be used and Calum opens the door after hearing sounds of choking and gagging. Lights are turned down and Calum sees himself lying on the bed overdosed (Hayward,
Lighting is important to tell the mood of a film. Burton depicts sinister and scary images with low-key lighting. Tim Burton’s lighting techniques are completely unique. In “Edward Scissorhands“he contrasts lighting. Peg lives in a town that is bright and cheerful looking. Edward’s castle is depressing and gloomy. Tim Burton again shows off his
For example, in the main part of the clip (where all the murders arrive), each murder stands in a different lighting. The room is not just dark to create suspense and a horrific scene or not just light to show innocence. All different lightings are displayed throughout this scene because there is minimal importance. Many other elements rise over the element of lighting during this
Only, the truth itself is dark. This is ironic symbolism. Often times, truth is associated with good, as is light. Meanwhile, darkness is associated with bad. Baldwin flips the symbols as to create verbal irony. The idea of revelations is continued through other symbols as well. Jazz holds different symbolic meanings to the narrator as opposed to Sonny. The narrator correlates jazz with the dark aspects of Sonny. He relates it to the cause of Sonny’s addiction. Sonny, on the other hand, correlates jazz with happiness as it is his light in the dark. Another symbol is found in the quote, “it glowed and shook above my brother’s head like the very cup of trembling”. The light holds religious undertones, evident with the allusion to Isaiah 51.17, 22-23. The religious aspect ties in to the idea that through both the dark and light, the characters find understanding; about each other as well as themselves. Religion is a way of attempting to find understanding in the universe, so it supports the development through understanding brought on by the light and the
Most of the actors are wearing darker clothing as well which makes their faces stand out even more. This lighting style also adds to the tension and the mystery of the scene. It makes the audience on edge. The contrast filled lighting of film noir is also effective at bringing out the extremes of emotions and thought. The darkness of the genre makes anything that goes wrong seem less taboo, because the lighting of the genre sets up the norms for the world that the film lives in—and in that world, bad things happen. The lighting of the film helps the audience understand the world that the characters are in.
Another symbol that Baldwin uses throughout the story is the symbol of lightness and darkness. Lightness and darkness usually symbolize good and evil. One example of darkness that Baldwin uses in “Sonny’s Blues” is when Mama, the narrator’s mother, was telling him about the death of his and Sonny’s uncle. After Mama told the story of the brothers’ uncle being run over and killed by a car full of white men, she said, “Your Daddy says he never in his life seen anything as dark as that road after the lights of that car had gone away” (58). In this example, Baldwin uses the darkness of the road to create a deeper meaning behind the uncle’s death and the father’s sadness. The reason the father felt as if nothing could ever be as dark as that road is because he experiences his only brother dying in front of him. Death, especially murder, is considered to be a very “dark” subject. When there is a funeral, mostly every person is wearing black or dark clothing because he is mourning over the death of a loved one. Another example is when the narrator reminisces on the days when all of the ‘old folks’ would sit around in the living room after church. “They would all sit in the chairs while the night is creeping up outside, but no one knows it yet…everyone is looking at something a child cannot see” (56). Baldwin uses the darkness of night as a symbol of death in this
Director Tim Burton uses lighting throughout his films in order to create a feeling of sorrow toward his characters. One example
The creation and consumption of films are a common favorite pastime for many people and have been for hundreds of years, but while some films can seem deceptively simple, many elements go into creating a scene, much less an entire movie. Directors use these elements which include, but are not limited to style, mood, composition and special effects to create a product that we often don’t acknowledge without looking deeper into the film. These components together are called Mise en Scène (Ebert). Of course, film can be enjoyed leisurely but there are so many more aspects of film to be explored and analyzed such as the composition of camera movement, lighting, color, sounds and music. In this case, I chose to analyze the “Redrum” scene from the renowned film, The Shining directed by Stanley Kubrick. In this scene, Danny Torrence, a five year old boy wanders around his mother’s room with a knife in hand, muttering the word “Redrum” over and over again before scrawling it across the door. I feel that a lot of this scene’s mood and style relies heavily on the camera work of the scene, the lighting and colors, and the music incorporated into the segment.
Putting the use of lighting to present certain mood to the audience can be traced back to early expressionistic movies from early 20’s and 30’s. Horror movie such as “Nosferatu”, “M”, and “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligary”. While this movie preceded “Citizen Kane” in term of using lighting and shadow to give an atmospheric feel to the viewers “Citizen Kane” was the very first movie that use mise-en-scene in the same expressionistic way that did not involve any creature, murderers, and movie
Light appears in a number of forms throughout the story. It appears as a spotlight, moonlight or even absence of light. It has been used to illuminate both figurative and literal aspects of the plot. When the narrator is told about the passing of his uncle, the mother recalls a moonlit road and a moonlit night. Like many authors, Baldwin uses symbolism to explain hidden secrets, expectations and imaginations of characters in a story. Like many other authors, Baldwin tells the story from the first person point of
Let us begin, by looking at the many hidden meanings within the symbols; such as, “Dusk”, which means many things; among them are it’s the right time of night to begin all “Mischief”. Bad things that happen are easily concealed. Also, the time that
The next scene begins with a man sitting in a wheelchair in the radiation room with a phone to his head. The camera pulls out to reveal that the man waiting for his next treatment is Kyle and that he was actually John in the previous scenes. Then Deborah receives a call from the hospital informing her that her husband is behind on his payments for his radiation treatments. The film ends with Kyle receiving a call from his wife and before he can do anything, it cuts to black.
Lighting as we know, creates the atmosphere for the setting, it establishes the overall tone for what the audience sees. Lighting is key in filming, as it can change tones from scene to scene to create a certain subliminal meaning. For instance the contrasting light from character to character to allow the viewer to understand the differences. Throughout the movie “The Dark Knight” we are able to see how the lighting allows for the directors subliminal meaning to seek through; darkness within. As the name of the movie suggests “Dark Knight” the movies overall tone is set in the darkness. This dark atmosphere allows for an eerie feeling, tension to build up and an anxiety feeling for the viewer. To understand the underlining meaning behind the lighting choices within the film, it 'll be shown by the protagonist, antagonist and the overall atmosphere within the movie.
Lighting and colour are powerful visual features that enhance the mood of the scene and provide an understanding of the scene. In this case, the lighting and colour implements depth into the scene. The shadowy clouds set the dark tone of the scene, which provokes the audience feel suspense and uncertainty of the end result
