In October of 2015, Calvin Christian High School’s Advanced Placement (AP) Government class conducted a poll in Walker, Michigan to better understand the citizens’ political views. The government class’s twelve students collaborated over the course approximately two weeks to create an unbiased poll with concise demographic questions and current political issues. The twelve students broke down into groups of four to formulate questions. After researching current topics and forming the questions, the class carefully critiqued each question to prevent bias, incoherency, or redundancy. After going through the long list of questions, the class voted, and nine questions were selected, and thus transferred to the official poll. The last step in …show more content…
One of those questions pertains to an individual identifying as either a Protestant Christian or a Catholic and their view on the legality of same-sex marriage. Therefore, one could hypothesize that the majority of Christians, including Catholics and Protestants, object to the legality of same-sex marriage, and of those individuals who object, the majority are men. Several factors play an important role in the hypothesis that Christians would disagree with same-sex marriage. Regarding the poll, respondents were asked to pick the choice that best represented their stance on the legality of same-sex marriage. Respondents could choose from the following answers: “strongly disagree”, “somewhat disagree”, “indifferent”, “somewhat agree”, “strongly agree”, and “undecided”. The group the hypothesis pertains to are the people who said “strongly disagree” or “disagree”. The first piece of evidence that would lead one to believe that Christians would show, to a certain degree, disagreement with legalizing same-sex marriage involves important passages in their holy book, the Bible. The Bible contains passages that both deem homosexuality as sinful, as well as affirm only marriage between man and woman. One passage that does an adequate job of displaying a view that homosexuality is sinful is located in Leviticus, which reads, “Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is
Greater social acceptance of homosexuality along with legalization of gay marriage might produce more happiness for homosexuals. Moreover, if gay marriage were legalized throughout the country, then the full benefits of marriage would be extended to homosexuals, including benefits for Married couples that are obtained through tax policy, insurance coverage, and inheritance law. One of the most common non-consequentialist arguments against homosexual sex is that it is Unnatural, which it goes against nature. Natural law arguments against homosexuality And same-sex marriage have often traditionally been grounded in religious viewpoints on sexuality and the sanctity of heterosexual marriage. For example, many Christians and Jews who denounce homosexuality do so on the basis of Old Testament Bible verses such The Old Testament appears to permit polygamy. And the New Testament prohibits divorce. If we reject gay marriage on biblical grounds, should we also reject divorce and permit
The way people ultimately view homosexuality, whether in religion, politics or modern popular culture, is all determined by traditional or changing points of view. This essay will discuss mainly liberal and conservative Christian interpretations of the Bible, including many verses that may support or condemn homosexuality. It will also discuss the political views and laws against same-sex marriage and the social activism in the homosexual community. This is all about view points and it has many conflicting views and arguments.
The two surveys utilized data from the National Annenberg Election Study. The data was retrieved using Internet and telephone collection methods. An advantage to this method was the utilization of two pools of sampling. The pools were each collected from the Internet, and one telephone. Also, the author used already available data. This significantly reduced the time and financial strain that a survey could take up. The sample was collected through random digit dialing and availability to the Internet. This adds to the reliability of the results. Traditional phone surveys use a set list of phone numbers. This would exclude those who have private or unlisted numbers. This problem is avoided with random digit dialing. The surveys were conducted during four different waves. The waves were from winter, spring, summer, and fall waves. The winter wave resulted in 19,190 respondents. The spring wave resulted in 17, 747 interviews. The summer wave included 20,052 interviews. The fall wave resulted in 19,241 respondents. To be
Among young influential minds, The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington DC. evoked foster care placement to prevent the ability of children being placed in homosexual homes. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 16 states, “Men and women of full age, without any limitation...have the right to marry...found a family... entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution…” (UDHR, 1948). Not defending the ability to same-sex marriage. In New Jersey a Methodist Ocean Grove Camp declined a Civil Union Ceremony. Religious beliefs argue that in the bible God does not promote or support gay marriage. Supporting their reasons in the bible, as stated by God, “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither...nor homosexuals...will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1st Corinthians 6:9-10 (NKJV)). Debates continue in several schools. At a school in Florida a social studies teacher posted a comment on facebook criticizing same-sex marriage. In other schools teachers dismissed students involved in homosexual relationships claiming to be uncomfortable. Therefore, many will argue the several consequences to allowing same-sex marriage, but the inability to see past the discrimination among Americans prevent a growth in our society. Positivity can be created through Americans creating a
Same-sex couples are becoming increasingly popular in our society and advocates have been pushing for social justice to abolish sexual discrimination. America has been misled by opponents of the Religious Freedom Restoration Acts who claim a business' right to religious freedom to turn away gay customers is discrimination and bigotry, and we need to return to the biblical view of homosexuality as what it really is: sin. This paper will cover religious freedom and the advancement of gay rights in society today as it pertains to the opposing arguments of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act passed recently in Indiana.
For the interviews, the purpose was to find expert opinions and conclusions to why the student voter turnout is so low. To find these experts, the research team conducted two interviews with two different political club organizations on Ball State’s campus. The research team requested a representative from each group that could provide an expert opinion that could aid in determining the answer for the research question. The first organization was College Democrats and the other was College Republicans. The research team thought it would be best if they got opinions from both sides of the political spectrum to see if there were any difference in opinions. The last interview was conducted with a Political Science professor from Ball State’s campus. The research team determined that the opinion of this professor could be key in determining the research question because of the professor’s profound knowledge in political
These public opinion polls play a significant role. They are used throughout the election campaign to track where candidates are in comparison to the others. The outcomes of these polls can sway voters, they can help direct campaign funds to needed areas to help boost their numbers, and they can redirect each candidate's efforts of concentration. After we have carefully analyzed and examined all of our candidate’s offerings, it’s time to cast our vote. On Election Day, we head to our polling venue and vote for the candidate that we feel best embodies what we believe in. In the U.S. Election Day is the first Tuesday in November following the first Monday between the 2nd and the 8th of the month. In the beginning, this date was not an issue. The average voter owned his own land and worked that land. The farmer would leave out on Monday, vote on Tuesday, and return to his land on Wednesday. In todays fast pace society, not all registered voters have the luxury of being able to vote because of their work schedule. That is just one of the reasons that voter turnout is lower today. A big reason is that today’s society feels like their one vote won’t make a difference. A
There are many controversies surrounding today's world, such as abortion, animal testing, and social reform issues. It seems that no one can come to a common agreement on the legitimacy of these topics. Personal characteristics, such as upbringing, culture, religion and ethnicity, all play a role in determining one's feelings on a given controversial issue. However, one of the most protested and discussed issues in current political debate is same-sex marriage. There is no right or wrong answer to this question, only hard pressed arguments expressing speculation regarding supposed outcomes, benefits and possible tribulations that would come along with the endorsement of gay marriage. Such ideas are shown
Of those who considered themselves extremely religious, 80% said they were against of same-sex marriage, with 12% in favor of it. The strongest resistance came from white Protestant evangelicals. Those who called themselves "secular" favored same-sex marriage by 64% to 28%.
Political and social involvement is among the most discussed issues nowadays, since the considerable influence of public opinion on government policy is unquestionable. It is obvious that political participation directly affects our lives. The range of attitudes toward controversial aspects of politics, economics, religion, and so on is too broad in American society. In this regard, public opinion research becomes extremely important. It helps us better understand citizens ' expectations, to assess the impact of public opinion on government decision-making, and, thus, to forecast the possible future events that may play crucial role in the development of society. The aim of this assignment is to interview people from different demographic groups and to analyze their various points of view on social and political issues. I asked 23 people to take my survey. For this purpose, I mostly used the questions from a quiz of the Pew Research Center. However, I added a few more questions to my questionnaire. It seemed reasonable because it provided a deeper understanding of such important issues as the cost of liberty, the guarantee of safety and security of all members of the society, invasion of privacy, and limitations on freedom of speech and expression. Though in general, my questionnaire covers a wide range of themes, the questions can be divided into three main categories:
The results of this structure, consistent religious participation, routine coverage of religious writing, and frequent collaboration with religious groups can possibly boost anti-homosexual attitudes; furthermore, when religious preachers speak of the “word” of God to the masses, followers are less likely to question the “why” it is wrong to be gay, but instead follow a belief that has a negative perception on the LGBT community, for it is God’s word. Also, it leaves little room for anyone to question the validity; of the ideology that homosexuality is unconventional because the religion itself and the people participating in it consider it is true without a doubt for the reason that it is God’s word. It is somewhat similar to a black sheep stuck in the middle of a crowed white sheep horde, which must continue moving on with the group, for that is what all the other sheep’s are doing. The religious’ judgment on gay sexuality affects the people contributing to the principle, but also those of non-religious backgrounds, for there is an unintended recollection that same-sex attraction is incorrect since he/she has heard that religion has stated it is sinful. “Research on religious contexts has suggested that even people who are not personally religious may be influenced by the religious culture in which they live” (Adamczyk 340). If the religious context is more disapproving of homosexuality in a country, then anti-homosexual sentiment may be displayed and voiced through
The topic of legalizing same sex marriages brings up heated debates on legal, religious, moral, and philosophical grounds. In researching material for this paper this writer could not help but read reports that indicate that the country is fairly well divided on this issue. The debate can go round and around and the answer to the question of legalizing same sex marriages is not as easy as it may seem. There are solid rebuttals to any supposition one makes on the issue, making the debate a lot more interesting than one might believe.
Debate over the legalization of same sex marriage has been a large debate in the US for a long time. The two biggest groups that partake in this opposition come from either the religious community or by gay and non religious individuals. Religion to date plays a big part and influences decisions to keep same sex marriage illegal. It has been shown in studies (Woodward) that there are many religious groups that have been actively involved in support of ballots such as Proposition 8 in California. The influence from the religious sector is not unanimous. It appears that not all religious groups are opposed to same sex marriage. There are some denominations such as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (2009) and the Presbyterian Church
Meanwhile, at the beginning of my exegesis research paper , I dared to ask the question, “Does God commend homosexuals?” Naturally, the first reaction by many devout Christians would say, “the Bible does condemn homosexuality”, but again the question still stands, “Does God commend homosexuals?” We can see how the Bible more often than not teaches against any sexual relations except between husband
The current gay marriage debate talks about the assumption Christians oppose same-sex marriage and the opinion that children have a right to male and female parents. The christian heritage of marriage is flexible and adapts to the times. Homosexuality is a non event in the bible. The only serious objections are from St. Paul, but he doesn’t object to the act of homosexuality he sees it as unnatural and a human disorder cause by rejecting God. In the view of Christians, only humans sin (not animals), so sin is not a deciding factor for sexual activity. Nature is a deciding factor for sexual activity. As Jesus sees it, it is the quality of a relationship that make sexual relationships moral or healthy. This is why many Christians now feel to support same-sex marriage. In Christ there is no male and female. It’s the language that is gendered. Same-sex marriage makes us think whether two men or two women can be a sign of a relationship between Christ and the
