Our society has the belief that women have always been portrayed as weak, emotional, and powerless. Throughout this article by Tavia Grant, it shows how women do not get the same opportunities men receive. Statistically shown, women are still earning less money than men regardless to the amount of education they possess (Grant). Women are accepted to hold obligations regarding family tasks while the men do the providing in the family. The article shows the disadvantages women have in Canada compared to men, however, it also shows gender inequality and gender discrimination. Women worked during the World War I where they travel as nurses with the soldiers oversea (Sungrab). As time passed, most men have shifted from working on farms to working in factories. This period was known as the Industrial Revolution. However, another World War was just around the corner and majority of the men had to serve their time for the war; leaving the women responsible for jobs they left behind. Once more, the men returned to the war and, the women were committed to leave the workforce. Society sees men with the traits that display more stronger and dominant attitudes that is left women to be in the shadow. Women having a lower income compared to men are not because they work fewer hours, and it is not because they have a lower education level as well (Grant). This shows patriarchy where it revolves around a power system that is organized around the dominance of men. “Even with all of these factors are considered, the result remains the same: a wage gap” (Grant). During the election, it was shown that the majority of the elected members were men (Taber).
