Cancer is a leading cause of death around the world and its frequency continues to rise (Neal Megahan). Each year 12.7 million people discover they have cancer and 7.6 million people die from the disease (Neal Megahan). More than half of the people that discover they are diagnosed with cancer, eventually die from this disease. Cancer is a prevailing issue that needs to be further studied because of how it affects individuals psychologically, physically, and its impacts on daily life.
Cancer patients go through a lot of psychological problems. Problems such as addicting or even depression, both of these problems can easily be

Therapy also plays an important role in dealing with psychological problems. After months of treatments such as chemo, often patients start questioning what’s next. Will I lose my hair? How fatigue will I become? Will I be nauseated? Will I experience pain? Body changes from cancer treatment can range from hair loss to the loss of a limb. These kinds of changes can be hard to handle because others can see them. Many people who lose hair choose to wear scarves, wigs, or hats. Some people choose artificial limbs (prostheses) and reconstructive surgery after cancer surgery. Both short- and long-term solutions like these draw less attention to or help hide a person’s physical differences (Coping with). Fatigue is the most common side effect of cancer treatment. Fatigue due to cancer treatment is different from everyday tiredness. It can occur suddenly (Coping with). Fatigue makes the arm and legs feel heavy and with all the fatigue they often don’t have to urge to eat. Fighting this disease makes the body sick, making the nausea unbearable to handle. With the right medication, nausea can be limited unless waited until the pain was severe. Making sure to plan ahead and getting all the right information regarding being sick is extremely important. Some patients with cancer do not experience cancer-related pain. Some patients experience pain associated with their cancer and its treatment. If cancer does cause pain, at some
Cancer has one of the biggest effects on the patients mental health but also the patients loved ones and friends. It is one of the hardest things to get a grip on when the doctor tells someone that they have cancer and a fifty-fifty chance of making it. "The disease can bring many changes-in what people do and how they look, in how they feel and what they value" (Dakota 4). It makes people look at the world and their lives in a different way, valuing now what they took for granted and seeing the bigger picture in every scenario. It is something that no one can actually brace, even after the doctor tells them. Through it all though, the person must remain strong and optimistic because the cancer can affect the person's moods and in return affect the outcome of the person and the chances of their making it
Cancer is the main cause of death in the world, estimating 8.2 million fatalities in 2012 alone
There are over 14 million cancer victims currently living in the United States. There are over 1,500,000 new cases of cancer that occur every year. Cancer is the number two cause of death in the United States just behind heart disease. There are over 500,000 cancer related deaths in the nation each year. Lung and bronchus cancer are the leading killers with over 150,000 deaths a year. Prostate cancer is the most diagnosed cancer for males with over 220,000 cases a year. For females, breast cancer is the most diagnosed form of cancer with over 230,000 cases a year. These statistics were pulled from www.cancer.org. Current trends suggest that these numbers may continue along their present rate but over time improved treatments will shift the
When someone says the word “disease” or “illness” the most common association with these words are Cancer. Cancer is so frighteningly common that it is expected by The American Cancer Society to have 564,800 people die of cancer this year which is a little more than 1,500 people a day. Cancer is the second leading cause of death. With these statistics to back up Cancer one will see walks supporting cancer, media discussing possible new found cures, nfl football players wearing pink to support breast cancer awareness, the Susan G. Komen foundation and so many other big foundations raising millions of dollars towards a cure. Where are the walks or large foundations to raise awareness of diseases for psychosis such as Schizophrenia? Schizophrenia
Cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths in America, second to heart disease. This is according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2012, about 1,596 people per day in the United States die of cancer. The numbers don’t lie, but the next time a new statistic is released, the figure would likely increase.
Many of them, scared of how their bodies will react to the treatments today, but also relieved that their doctors were able to find the disease and start treatments. These patients know that when they are finished with their treatments and the cancer is gone that they will be cancer free but not cured. Knowing that even though they might be cancer free when the treatments are finished, there is still the possibility that the cancer can return, making it very hard for some of these patients to keep going to their treatment appointments. Without a known cure for cancer, these patients live with the fear that one day they could wake up and their cancer will be back and frequently when this happens, the cancer returns in a form that is even worse than the first time. Everyone in the world has the possibility of being diagnosed with a form of cancer, however the average person doesn’t always think about this fear. People who have already been diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life, live with this fear every
One of the current arguments surrounding cancer, is that cancer treatment is too severe. Many cancer patients with less severe cases, may stray from cancer treatment due to some of the undesirable aspects of that particular treatment, and as a result, it could potentially have a negative effect on further research. There are many factors that could lead to this, such as the severity of their treatment, the misconceptions of cancer, and the other struggles of receiving cancer treatment. The simple explanation behind the thought is that cancer treatments can and will be used to subdue different types of cancers, and the treatments used for a particular patient’s cancer could also be used for a more severe cancer variety as well. Patients who go
Being diagnosed with a cancer is a life changing moment for the patient, friends and the families. "there are 10.9 million new cases, 6.7 million deaths and 24.6 million people living with cancer" (Simonelli & Andersen, 2007). "Cancer is the second leading cause of death except heart disease which is number one in the whole world" (Simonelli & Andersen, 2007). Another name for cancer is malignancy. "Cancer refers to group of diseases that involve uncontrolled cell growth" (Corner & Bailey, 2009). There are more than 100 types of cancer, including breast, skin, lung, pancreatic, ovarian, prostate. "If a tumor cells penetrated local tissues, lymphatics, or blood vessels, is a sign of malignancy with potential to metastasize"(Copstead, & Banasik, 2014 p.114). It takes some years for cancer to manifest without the person knowing, symptoms vary depending on the type. “Cancer treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery" (WEBMD, 2014, p. 1). "About a third of all cancer deaths in the U.S are as a result of poor nutrition, overweight, lack of exercise” (Mertz, Oberleitner, Odle, & Carson-DeWitt, 2013). Some other causes are excessive fat intake, family history, occupational and environmental factors. Some signs and symptoms of cancer are: "fatigue, lump or thickened area felt under the skin, Sores that refused to heal, weight changes, hoarseness, persistent cough or breathing, persistent unexplained muscle or joint pain, bleeding,
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Cancer is when abnormal cells divide into smaller cells without control and could invade other tissues without you even knowing until check-up time comes around. It can spread through the blood and lymphatic systems. There are numerous types of cancer that can affect any organ in your body. Cancer can start almost anywhere in the human body, which we are made up of a trillion cells. Usually, when we get a scab or a scratch, new cells form to create a scar. Human cells nurture and split to form new cells when the body needs them. When cancer develops, this process breaks down. The cells caused by cancer become more and more abnormal. The old and destroyed cells stay alive when
According to an article published by Dr. Zabora and his colleagues (2001), it has been reported that lung cancer patients have some of the highest rates of psychological distress whereas men with prostate cancer have amongst the lowest rates of distress. One might wonder why there is a difference between the rates of distress when both groups of individuals have cancer. The simplest answer would be that these rates differ because individuals are not able to effectively adapt to their situation and have difficulty in changing their lifestyle. This is because cancer does disrupt all aspects of an individual’s lifestyle. Also, it is possible that an individual already has pre-existing psychosocial factors (i.e. history of depression, substance
Cancer is a very overwhelming difficulty to endure for many aspects. It’s not just the physical transition patients have to face, but also having to deal with the psychological burdens, and social pressures. Figuring out a treatment plan can be exhausting, especially if there’s a loss of information or trust with a physician. In a research study patients showed to be more open minded to unconventional ways of treatment when they have suffered a great deal from conventional care and lost trust in their provider. Dissatisfaction with healthcare has grown, especially since the toxic effects of chemotherapy have become better known (Münstedt, Kirsch, Milch, Sachsse, & Vahrson, 1996). Other studies have suggested
Over the last few decades there has been an increase in survival rates which means that patients are living longer with the late adverse effects of their cancer treatment (Office for National Statistics, 2013). The long term effects can take their toll on the patient’s emotional, physical, psychological and social well-being. Therefore it is important that these issues are addressed in Oncology practice (Barker et al, 2009).
Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with approximately 14 million new cases in 2012.2 The amount of new cases is expected to rise by about 70% over the next 2 decades. Cancer which causes nearly 1 in 6 deaths, is the second leading cause of death globally, and was responsible for 8.8 million deaths in 2015. Approximately 70% of deaths from cancer occur in low- and middle-income countries. In 2012 about 14.1 million new cases of cancer occurred globally (not including skin cancer other than melanoma).3 The most common types of cancer in males are lung cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and stomach cancer.
Cancer is among the leading cause of death worldwide. In 2015 there has been an estimated 1,658,370 new cancer diagnoses and 589,430 deaths in the United States. Moving forward in cancer treatment and prevention means exploring the mechanisms that fuel the disease such as glycolysis. Glucose is an essential source of energy to both humans and animals required for cell energy and a carbon source for cell building. Catabolism of glucose known as glycolysis is elevated in cancers, especially cancers with rapid growth rates. This discovery leads to the studies of hexokinase-II (HK-II) which is the enzyme responsible for the increased glucose within the cell cycles. This research will focus on the enzyme HK-II.
Cancer is one of the biggest burdens that the world has to face daily. According to the National Cancer Institute, in 2012, 14 million new cases of cancer were established and 8.2 million cancer-related deaths worldwide (“Cancer Statistics”). Sadly, the number of new cancer cases and deaths will only be increasing as the years go on. Cancer has such an impacting effect on everyone, whether a loved one, yourself, or someone you knew has been affected by this disease. Due to this, I want to join the battle of beating cancer, so I am looking to further my education into radiation therapy for my future occupation. However, after researching more about this profession, I realized there are numerous ways and kinds of treatment that patients can
