Themes of Philosophy and Religion in Voltaire’s Candide
Philosophy and religion are two themes consistently satirized throughout Voltaire’s Candide. Voltaire tells the story of a naïve young man, Candide, hopelessly in love with the selfish and vain Cunégonde. Candide’s quest to reconnect with Cunégonde is accompanied by various misfortunes that counter his personal optimistic belief that “everything is for the best”. Candide’s encounters force him to reconsider his optimistic views in order to gain a better understanding of the world surrounding him. Voltaire not only uses the story of Candide to reveal the folly of continuously relying on vague philosophies rather than acknowledge the tangible world, but exposes the hypocrisy of religion

Religious men and leaders place emphasis on worldly ideas rather than genuine faith. In chapter three, Candide comes across a protestant orator giving a speech on charity. When he asks the orator for bread, he asks Candide if he believes the Pope is the antichrist. Candide tells the man he is unsure and that his own answer does not belittle the fact he is hungry. The orator, despite having just finished speaking on charity, turns Candide away for his beliefs. In this scene, Voltaire is ridiculing the extreme Protestant sects of his time that were consumed by their hatred of Catholicism and Rome. Religion is further satirized by the auto-da-fé, or act of faith, the learned men of Lisbon perform. The men blame the “sins” of Candide and Pangloss for the devastating earthquake and punish them via hanging and flogging. During the punishments, a sermon and religious concert are given. The beautiful religious music accompanying the horrifying punishments emphasize the hypocrisy of the church's appearance of holiness and the terrible events it oversees. Shortly after the punishment is carried out, another earthquake occurs dislodging the rationalization of religion and exemplifying that the sins of man, in this case Candide and Pangloss, are not the cause of disastrous
oltaire’s Candide provides an Enlightenment religious and social critique of the Old Regime though satire. In Candide, Voltaire depicts the hypocrisy of the religious leaders during the Old Regime time period along with the criticizing the idea that reason can overcome social turmoil.
Candide and The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano point out different roles of religious convictions about violent evil. By the time Voltaire wrote Candide, he was no longer a Christian. He believed there was not a rational basis for the Christian belief in God at work in the world. Whereas, Equiano’s experience of slavery brought him to Christianity, which helped him make sense of how God could redeem an evil act such as slavery. After reading the short stories the reader can conclude that the view of Christianity is irrelevant in the social life of Voltaire, while Equiano believed that Christianity provided sufficient answers to injustices like slavery.
The “Age of Reason”, during Europe was a time in history where people started to confide in eachother and themselves when it came to reason and logic; and it was a period when creative ability came to light and it was encouraged. In “Candide,” Voltaire’s satiric theme is broad and varied. Although the most interesting satire is the one on religion, especially the utopia in which Candide starts off the story in, the first in importance is philosophical optimism, specifically Pangloss’s philosophy which in the novel this philosophical optimism seems to represent mankind's overall and overused optimism as means to copping with tragedy or loss. Pangloss’s philosophy is both the most important point for debate among the novel’s characters and one of the main targets of Voltaire’s satire. In his novel Candide, Voltaire often criticized religious beliefs of the times. His criticism of religion surfaces throughout the entire story. The kindness of the Anabaptist that Candide met showed the silliness of religious prejudices. The old woman's story of her father, Pope Urban X, and the life of wealth she lived as a child shows the corruption of the Catholic clergy. Finally, the conversation Candide and Cacambo had with the old man in Eldorado shows the benefits of a simple religion, a contrast of the European religions of the time.

For philosopher Alexander Pope in An Essay on Man, Pope believed that, “Whatever is, is right” (L. 294), in that God is in control and every human being is a part of a greater design of God. Voltaire later challenged that belief in Candide with the idea that God does not produce order, but instead, we must produce it ourselves and use reason to give our lives meaning. Candide is a fictional satire of the optimism many philosophers had for life in general during the mid 1700’s written in response to Alexander Pope’s An Essay on Man. Written by Voltaire, the literary alias of Francois-Marie Arouet, the satire covers religion, the wealthy, love, why people thought natural disasters occurred and especially, philosophy. The novel even goes on to make fun of the art of literature by giving ridiculous chapter headings. Just about everything Voltaire put into Candide is designed to question and satirize real world injustices. In effect Candide is the 18th century equivalent of a modern day sitcom (Shmoop).
Even though many people practiced this doctrine Voltaire did not aside with it instead, he implanted doubts on the chances of achieving true happiness and real conformism. Voltaire’s opinion was that one could not achieve true happiness in the real world but only experience it in an utopia. With the many hardships that Candide goes through ultimately leads him to abandon his attitude of optimism. Candide’s misfortunes and adversities often contrasted with his optimistic view on life. Noticeably, Voltaire uses this satirical piece as a way to criticize this exaggerated optimism. Candide was one of Voltaire’s major works, and is considered the most important by many historians and literary analysts. Throughout Candide, there are many scathing attacks, mostly through satire, irony, and absurd characters (Voltaire). Candide explores the hypocrisy that was rampant in the Church. Voltaire writes about the inhumanity of the clergy, most notably the Inquisitor, in hanging his fellow citizens over mere philosophical differences. Voltaire's Candide is the story of how one man's adventures affect his philosophy on life. Candide begins his journey full of optimism that he lives in "the best of all possible worlds," but he learns that it is naïve to say that good will eventually come of any evil.
Voltaire made heavy connections to religion throughout the story of Candide.The story relates mostly towards Christianity because of its popularity at the time, but Voltaire also relates to Judaism and Islam. Voltaire focused on making a mockery of each religious figure in the story.
In Voltaire’s Candide, we are taken by the hand through an adventure which spanned two continents, several countries, and to a multitude of adverse characters. The protagonist, Candide, became the recipient of the horrors which would be faced by any person in the 18th century. But Candide was always accompanied with fellows sufferers, two of which our focus will lay, Pangloss and Martin. In equal respects, both are embodiments of different philosophies of the time: Pangloss the proponent of Optimism and Martin the proponent of Pessimism. Each of the two travelers is never together with Candide, until the end, but both entice him to picture the world in one of their two philosophies.
