Cannabis in California In this essay I will explore the positive and negative effects of legalizing Cannabis in California. I support the legalization of Cannabis, these are my reasons why; If California does legalize Cannabis then it would decrease the money spent on drug enforcement and criminal persecution. Legalizing Cannabis would also reduce the value of the black market product. It would also generate revenue for the California economy because it would be a taxable item that is in high demand. In the last few years there have been a few propositions to legalize Cannabis here in California. In 2009 the Marijuana Control, Regulation and Education Act was introduced to California legislators. The risk of the owners being hijacked is increasingly overwhelming and causes violent crime to rise. If California does legalize Cannabis then their will be more annual deaths due to smoking. In a recent study done in the United Kingdom researchers have wrote that, “Tobacco smoking kills almost 1 percent of smokers each year in the United Kingdom, and if marijuana had the same effect, some 30,000 people would die from it annually.” (Henry). So if a person smokes Cannabis as much as they would smoke tobacco then it would have the same effect. On the contrary Cannabis users do not smoking as much as tobacco users. The effect of Cannabis in long time users have resulted in lower levels of dopamine, “Those who began using the drug at a younger age, had lower levels of dopamine in a part of the brain called striatum, why could be why cannabis users appear to lack motivation.” (Chow). The Cannabis Policy Reform Act of 2014 does state that recreational use is only prohibited by persons over the age of 21, thus making the law similar to alcohol laws. Legalizing Cannabis would also allow the government to tax it just like alcohol is taxed. Since Washington and Colorado have legalized Cannabis it is estimated that it will bring in billions of dollars annually.
