Beowulf In the long story and legends of Beowulf he is shown as a heroic young man who fights with his internal desires as a person all while trying to rid people and places of monsters, because of of this people view him differently compared to others. Has it ever occured to you that people may judge or view you differently based on your actions or life conflicts? Well if that is the case then welcome to the life of Beowulf, Beowulf is an old swedish epic that depicts the life of a young prince from Geatland who travels to daneland to help rid the danes of their monster whose name is grendel. While studying the story of beowulf and the movies, book, and cantos that we all watched and read there was many differences between them all, some of the main differences that can be found are the characters and the problems that they face in each story line. Such as in the movies in one grendel is the one who cuts his arm off while in the animated version beowulf is the one who cuts his arm off in order to kill the dragon. Another difference between the movies is in the first one the only monster is grendel and his mother, while in the animated movie they show the sea monsters along with grendel his mother and the dragon all of which beowulf must …show more content…
His first rational that differs is his ethics and views on topics such as mercy and or rational in situations that affect the plot of the story of movies such as Beowulf deciding to lay with grendel's mother and create a whole new monster that replaces grendel. Something that also varies is his beliefs in each story, in the first movie his thinks grendel is there to mock them and cause havoc in daneland while in the second movie he thinks grendel is a monster who has been cursed upon the danes and is there to do nothing but harm and cause trouble with the
The two films Beowolf and Grendel(2005) and Beowolf(2007) have many differences. Even though both films are about a man coming to rid the land of a beastly troll, what really stands out is how different they are from one another. The main difference is that the main character Beowolf is portrayed as a hero in one film and an anti-hero in the other. A hero is a man, who is admired or idealized for courage and noble qualities. Although, a hero and an anti-hero are not the same thing. The difference between the two is an anti-hero lacks conventional heroic attributes. In one film, Beowolf is brave, courageous, trustworthy. Where as in the other film, Beowolf is a liar, fraud and coward. In the end, he still slay the beasts and saves the people. Moreover, an anti-hero. Meanwhile, in the other film Beowolf is not selfish and is determined to kill the beast and is genuinely a hero. Beowolf is a hero in the film Beowolf and Grendel and an anti-hero in Beowolf.
The story of Beowulf is a heroic epic chronicling the illustrious deeds of the great Geatish warrior Beowulf, who voyages across the seas to rid the Danes of an evil monster, Grendel, who has been wreaking havoc and terrorizing the kingdom. Beowulf is glorified for his heroic deeds of ridding the land of a fiendish monster and halting its scourge of evil while the monster is portrayed as a repugnant creature who deserves to die because of its evil actions. In the epic poem, Beowulf the authors portrays Grendel as a cold-hearted beast who thrives on the pain of others. Many have disagreed with such a simplistic and biased representation of Grendel and his role in the epic poem. John Gardner in his book, Grendel set out to change the
The movie Beowulf and the book Beowulf are different in many different ways. They are very motivating and daring. In the movie, they sang to get Grendel’s attention; however, in the book they were just celebrating. In the book, Grendel mother was killed by Beowulf; however, in the movie Beowulf lied about killing Grendel’s mom. In the movie, Beowulf is the father of the fire breathing dragon; however, in the book the dragon is just a person to defeat. The movie and book Beowulf are different such as singing, killing, and defeating monsters.
Beowulf is portrayed as a hero-figure, though a less-than-ideal leader, since his warrior-like tendencies and habits follow him. Conversely, the movie Beowulf portrays our hero as more of an anti-hero. By its very nature, Beowulf is an epic hero, but I do not think that the movie does not portray him as such a hero compared to the original translation, because it has an entirely different storyline. If anything, the movie portrays Beowulf as a weak person, easily swooned by the beauty of Grendel’s mother. The movie and the book differ in several key ways, including his relationship with the kingdom and his villains. Even though the general plot is the same, when you really take a deep look at the differences, Beowulf’s movie ceases to be a version of Beowulf anymore, but rather an entirely new story about the same person.
Beowulf’s cruelty is never seen as such (except by Grendel’s mother), and that leads him to become an undefeated hero in the eyes of the people
Still, those are the differences between the book and the movie versions. That’s what makes the movie so realistic and the book is just thrilled and boring. The lies that Beowulf tells in the movie is the reason. Also his decisions in the movie, such as the setting, Grendel’s head, and Grendel’s mother. Beowulf is like a different character in the book. However, he still plays his role both in the movie and the
Society has come a long way since the Middle Ages culturally and intellectually and can be clearly viewed throughout English literature. With this change comes a more abstract and evolved way of thinking. With that said, there is a massive distinction between the concepts and characters of the original text of the selection and the 2005 film Beowulf and Grendel. These differences include how the creators of the selections from the two societies use certain aspects to attract the attention of the audiences during their respected times in history and how the characters are portrayed in each works.
For instance, in the first movie we watched, Beowulf 2005, Grendel was a troll whose mother was a sea beast and his father was a troll. In Beowulf 2005, Grendel spoke using a series of grunting noises and spoke very little English. In the second movie Beowulf 2007, Grendel was a monster whose mother was a sea beast, but his father was King Hrothgar. This time Grendel communicated by speaking in old English. These differences are very minuscule, but they had a large impact on the ending of each movie.
The story of Beowulf is one of a great hero. Beowulf is a very generous person who is always willing to help out when people are in need. Over the course of the story, Beowulf ends up in three major battles: the battle with Grendel, with Grendel’s mother, and with the dragon. All of these battles were different in their style and the way Beowulf approached them was different. Beowulf also had different reasons to participate in each of the battles.
There is a hero and a villain in every story, we have: Batman and The Joker, Spider-Man and The Green Goblin, Thor and Loki, and of course Beowulf and Grendel. In the epic “Beowulf” our two main characters are Beowulf the hero of the story, and Grendel the evil demon who terrorized the world. In the epic, Beowulf and Grendel are noticeably different, but at the same time alike in many ways. The people in the story may not have notice the similarities, but they could not be hidden from the peering eye of the reader. In the story Beowulf was was brave, while Grendel was cowardly, Beowulf was helpful, while Grendel only wanted to hurt people; in comparison, they were both unnaturally strong and very arrogant.
Beowulf is one of the earliest and most famous works of English literature, and is still widely read today. However, over a thousand years has passed since it was written down in England, and even longer since it was originally spread by word of mouth in the old norse lands, and our values and concepts of the world are radically different than the people of Beowulf’s age. Although the epic Beowulf shows their concept of simplistic duality, in which there is only black and white, good and evil, the modern movie adaptation shows a much more complex view on the world, which can be seen in its main characters Grendel, Hrothgar, and Beowulf himself.
In the Old English time, psychologically was way different than modern time, due to the fact of many tribes trying to conquer the world. Beowulf was a heroic poem that was recorded by an unknown author who lives in the Old English of time, approximately written between 8 and 10 B.C. Beowulf was based on the Anglo-Saxons tradition, who which ruled a little of England. Beowulf was a warrior that fought in many battles against outrage monsters, such as Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a dragon; and shows courage and bravery throughout the battles and story. Beowulf is a good hero and being a good hero, eventually Beowulf was appointed as a king of the Geats. At the very end of the story, Beowulf dies, but vacate a good legacy behind for people to remember him with his battles and boasting. Throughout the story, Beowulf shows many bold moments in the story, which made the story as remarkable as it is. The psychologically complexity in Beowulf needs to be taken in the content of the time the story was made. The Old English do have differences than the modern literature among themselves. Old English and Modern literature do have difference because of the time periods, cultural values among their tradition, and religion. The other difference is how the tribes in Old English carry out their lives because the time was mostly of war and spreading their cultural around. To differentiate the modern literature and Old English is by

However, many have disagreed with such a simplistic and biased representation of Grendel and his role in the epic poem. John Gardner in his book, Grendel, sets out to change the reader’s perception of Grendel and his role in Beowulf by narrating the story through Grendel’s point of view. John Gardner transforms Grendel, once perceived as an evil fiend in Beowulf, into a lonely but intelligent outcast who is actually quite similar to humans, due to his intelligence capacity for rational thought and his real, and at times irrational emotions. Gardner portrays Grendel as a hurt individual and as a victim of oppression, ostracized from civilization. Although the two works revolve around the same basic plot,, the themes and characters in Beowulf and Grendel are often different and sometimes contradictory.
Heaney gives Grendel a personality while still following the plot lines of the original epic. Heaney even gives Hrothgar, the King of Danes, character flaws. In truth, Bewoulf is awfully egotistical and focuses on himself most of the time. One of the main reasons why he defeats Grendel is for his reputation. Beowulf is also a hero in some ways, and is loyal to his kings and nobles. Grendel is a monstrosity and a killer, but has fair traits and only wants to be accepted.
In the period of Nordic heroic age, the appearance of Beowulf seems a savior to the people. The story of Beowulf, who reminds that in the last years of Eastern Han, a man said to Cao cao, “Out of the chaos come the heroes”, is also suitable to describe Beowulf undoubtedly, the riots need to be quelled, and he must be the hero who is able to save the world and people during the disorder era, it is surrounding by danger and oppression: monsters and retaliation. Beowulf has three battles with the enemies, the monster Grendel invades the kingdom, Heorot; the mother of Grendel revenges for her son; and the dragon attacks his homeland injured
