In his book, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck portrays that capitalism is a good economic and political structure, yet at the same time, it has its own weaknesses. Capitalism allows the citizens under the control of the government to pursue any career they want, and it provides motivation for people to work. Steinbeck shows through his two main characters, George Milton and Lennie Small, that living under the umbrella that is a capitalist government provides motivation in that one can work as hard and as long as they can, and in return, they can earn more money, and eventually work their way up to the top of the “social ladder”. George and Lennie not only receive motivation from their paycheck that they will receive at the end of the month,
In the novella Of Mice and Men, the author Steinbeck expresses how power tangles around main characters. Both power and powerless are able to create positive and negative outcomes. There are Lennie Small and George Milton who show no restraint when it comes to power, Curley who suffers because of his greediness, and Slim who is in much better circumstance than all others due to his wisdom to withstand himself. Steinbeck demonstrates how those who do not realize they have to restrain themselves towards power above their ability will be more destructive than those who do.
John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men, illustrates the struggle of two workers, George and Lennie, trying to accomplish their dreams and their inevitability to fail.
Alice Walker, an American novelist, once stated that “the most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” In current society, power is everywhere, and everyone has at least has some control, no matter how ineffective they might feel. In the novella “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, the concept of power is represented on a ranch in the 1930’s. On the ranch, there is a group of outsiders- people who do not fit in- that consists of Crooks, a black stable buck, Curley’s wife, who is married to the powerful Curley, Lennie, a worker with a mental disability, and Candy, and old swamper. These outsiders are isolated and feel powerless compared to the rest of society. However, within this group of outsiders, power structures still exist and everyone has power in one way or another. Steinbeck, through the story of Crooks and Curley’s wife, teaches that no matter how powerless someone seems, they may still wield power over others.

The main conflict involved all characters that struggling for survival during the Great depression due to the insecurity of jobs, uncertainty about future and no enough money. One of the conflicts was man vs. society in the story. Crooks, who was a black man with crippled back, segregated from other farm workers. He did not allow sleeping in the bunkhouse with the rest of people. Crooks consistently discriminated and considered as a second class citizen which lived separately in the stable with horses. Furthermore, He had called names and abused by others. He had not even given respect to having name and society will stay the same which he could not attain American Dream.
The analysis of knowledge as, “ S knows that p if and only if (i) p, (ii) S believes that p and (iii) S has adequate evidence that p” is subject to a platonic objection for it to be true. Because when “has adequate evidence” does not entail “know of adequate evidence” problems with the analysis arise that defeat its claim of producing knowledge. The problem entails the inability to actively utilize evidence for verification. Verification is necessary, because if not provided no knowledge can be produced.
The novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck emphasizes the division in social classes and social structure based on power. The novel and its themes are based around the characters’ interactions and decisions. Their motivations come directly from other characters, and the social construct on the ranch that controls the characters within the novel. Each character has their own journey of giving into the powers that control their society and lives which leads to each of their own inescapable demises.
Our argument is, should the U.S. invest in nuclear energy? My partner and I believe we should not. The United States has been thinking about the detriments and the benefits of Nuclear Energy. Nuclear energy is a strong demand by many countries. Nuclear power is good for saving energy and contains the greenhouse gases that are released into the air everyday. The atom, is where nuclear power is stored. In the 1940’s, the Argonne National Laboratory was assigned the lead role in developing commercial nuclear energy. They were assigned this by the United States Atomic Energy Commission. Nuclear Power Plants most of the time, use fission to produce electricity. Despite all of this, nuclear power can also have a downside. This is the part we will be focusing
Power is presented through characters by using a long description of what the character is like, describing their appearance, positive points and negative points. The power of the character is presented by demonstrating their dominance or submissiveness over another character through their actions, speech and the way they behave around them, and if they change their behaviour around other people, for example Curley acts as if he’s the best in the world at everything around Lennie because he tries to beat him up but he doesn’t act that way towards Slim, who is more dominant and powerful than him in terms of dominance, but not in terms of ranch hierarchy.
“Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty,” said Mother Teresa. Humanity has struggled against being left alone and being lonely for a long time. As a result, humans formed a society where they could be together. On the other hand, there are still people who are left out of the society. In other words, there are still people out there who are marginalized, not accepted fairly to the society. John Steinbeck shows the marginalized people’s lives in his novel, Of Mice and Men. In his novel, characters such as Lennie, George, Candy, Curley’s wife, Crooks, and even the ranch workers, are marginalized from the society. Ranch workers like George, Candy, and Lennie have nowhere to go, and they do not have anybody to care for them. Especially for Lennie, he is mentally challenged, too. Crooks, being the colored man, suffers from discrimination. Curley’s wife is constantly surrounded with loneliness. In Of Mice and Men, marginalized people who are neglected from the society, create a society of their own; they share their dreams and help each other out although they are all different from each other.
John Steinbeck, an American novelist, is well-known for his familiar themes of depression and loneliness. He uses these themes throughout a majority of his novels. These themes come from his childhood and growing up during the stock market crash. A reader can see his depiction of his childhood era. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck shows the prominent themes of loneliness, the need for relationships, and the loss of dreams in the 1930s through the novels’ character.
History is full of examples of how power affects people's behaviors towards others. Well known examples in history include Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler. Kim Jong-Il, Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein are more recent examples of the negative abuse of power. In the novella Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, a common theme throughout the story is the misuse of power. Steinbeck uses the characters Curley’s wife and Crooks to teach the reader that people who possess less power are treated in a more demeaning fashion, but also treat others the same way in search of gaining power.
“Wha’s the matter with me?’ she cried. ‘Ain’t I got a right to talk to nobody? Whatta they think I am, anyways?” (Steinbeck 87) In the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Curley’s wife is discriminated against because she is a woman living in the 1930s when few females could live economically independent of men. By choosing not to name her, Steinbeck reinforces her insignificance on the ranch and her dependence on Curley. While a misfortunate victim of isolation, Curley’s wife exerts unexpected power attempting to mask her pain.
In life human nature can be known to be thought of as a high quality and/or low quality. Naturally, human nature is there without thought about what it actually is. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the author sprinkles clues and evidence of how human nature was and still is today. The themes that Steinbeck used throughout the novel were, for example friendship, loneliness, and weak vs. strong.
How did modern capitalism originate? While we enjoy the benefits of modern capitalism, many of us fail to consider where the system comes from. In a capitalistic society, private ownership and the accumulation of capital are crucial aspects of the system. Nevertheless, we do not contemplate the reasoning behind these ideas. From analyzing the texts written by Smith, Marx, and Weber, though, we can formulate origin stories of modern capitalism. Each of the thinkers--Smith, Marx, and Weber--tells a different origin story, focusing on natural propensity, organizational production, and idealistic changes, respectively. Although their critical contributions diverge on some aspects of the origin question, their analytical efforts enable us to interpret the social realities of modern capitalism.
