College App Capitalism, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.” A part of America’s society for decades, it has been a poison of corruption in our government. Our capitalist government is failing us and we see it in our education system, environment, and wars. War has become a business opportunity for politicians. We are currently bombing at least 8 different countries and most Americans can’t even name them, Why? It’s not for the benefit the people, but the benefit of banks, companies, and politicians. The origins of public schools began when children who couldn’t afford an education were offered an opportunity to go to public school. This is also where they learned how to do factory work. Murphy quoted Michael Katz for an Article by fee.org The Origins of Public School, 1998, on the situation of public schools in the late 1800’s “The values to be instilled by the schools were precisely those required for the conduct of a complex urban society. … The connection was unmistakable; schools were training grounds for commerce. . . . The common school made company men.” We continue to see this pattern in many other areas, for example, our prison system. As everyone knows the 13th Amendment abolished slavery, but there was a loophole. This being, “except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.” which is something the government made sure to take advantage of. In 2017 there were 1,330,000 people locked up in state prison, 197,000 in federal prisons, 630,000 in local jails, and 34,000 youths. This leads to a total of 2,191,000 people in prison in 2017. (prisonpolicy.org, Mass incarceration: the whole pie 2017, Peter Wagner and Bernadette Rabuy) These inmates are forced to work without pay under the threat of solitary confinement for companies like Victoria’s Secret, Boeing, Microsoft, among many others.
