There are many superheroes in the comic book universes, but none are as great as Captain America also known as Steve Rogers. There are two main comic book universes; one is called Marvel, and the other is called DC. Captain America is part of the Marvel universe and is by far the greatest superhero created in the comic book universe. He is the greatest due to his chemically enhanced abilities, his crime fighting work with the Avengers and other events that accord in the comic book universe. Captain America proved himself worthy of the Super Solider serum making him an almost perfect human specimen. The serum made him stronger, faster, and taller. It gave him a reaction time better than any athlete. He gained increased healing abilities that allow him to take a hit and bounce right back. Due to the serum’s healing abilities, The Cap was still alive after being frozen in a block of ice for decades. His enhanced abilities make him one of the few that can hold their own against Thor and Iron-man. Captain America is associated with many groups of superheroes; the most famous one is called the Avengers. In the comics, he was not an original member. In spite of a new age of superheroes, he continues to go on impossible missions giving hope to those in need. In the 1990's he gets turned into a werewolf and defeats Wolverine in a fight. Captain America’s weapon of choice is his shield. He could use a gun or his fist, but he would rather use his shield like a boomerang and knock attackers out. His shield is one of a kind because it is made out of Vibranium one of the rarest metals in the comic book universe. He stands up for and fights for the little guy. The film Captain America is a classic piece of American cinema that was intended to ignite patriotism in the hearts of all who view it. To accomplish this task the director had to make connections between the audience and the hero. The film uses pathos ethos and logos to make this necessary connection. Through these aspects the director is able to show the true character of Captain America and also successfully develop what kind of character he is. Although pa-thos ethos and logos all play a role in the development of the film without an emotional con-nection through pathos the other two would not be nearly as effective.
Captain America was started in 1941 by Timely comics, and it was revived in 1964 by Marvel comics. I believe that Captain America was made to represent the American dream, some people would argue he is to represent the country and the government but i believe he is meant to represent the American dream, of being better and being able to succeed regardless of where you come from. This is exemplified in the film when we see where Steve Rogers (Captain America) came from. He’s just a small scrawny kid from Brooklyn. He gets in fights and loses horribly, in the army training segments of the films he is by no means the best of an american soldier. He does demonstrate the character traits of greatness though. As seen when he dives on the grenade everyone else runs from. On the topic of his personality, Captain America is supposed to be the honest, hard working, moral exemplar of the Marvel Universe. A man who does not quit and regardless of circumstances he will always try to find a way to win. You do not have to dig too deep to say that this whether true or not is a representation of the American people. As was seen during the actions of many Amercian shown in World War
All superheroes have weaknesses. Whether it’s physically or mentally, they all have weaknesses that they struggle with that try to prevent them from being the best that they can be. Captain America and Beowulf share a similar weakness of the ability to get mortally wounded, due to the fact that they are both regular human beings. The advantage of Captain America though is that, due to the soldier serum, Captain America’s age is slowed down (Frost). This is so important because this was a major factor in why Beowulf died. Because Beowulf was growing old, he wasn’t as strong as he used to be. Therefore he wasn’t strong enough to fight the dragon (Beowulf 800-805). Unlike Beowulf, Captain America’s slow aging advantage will allow him to have strength and abilities that will allow him to fight for a long time.
They both have many features that a hero would have, such as being strong and courageous. They both prove these features by being put to the test against their enemies. In Beowulf, Beowulf grips Grendel’s arm and Grendel is incapable of getting away without ripping his arm off. Then, Beowulf shows his courage by standing up against Grendel’s Mother and the Dragon. Captain America shows his strength because he is able to lift and throw objects, such as people, farther than a normal person. Captain America additionally shows courage by fighting for his country. Beowulf and Captain America fight for the same reasons and they accept no rewards in return. They both fight for the good of people and they fight for self-satisfaction. They also fight alone, use no weapons, and are the leaders of their armies. Captain America does have his shield and that can be described as a weapon to a certain extent, but Beowulf had to use a sword against the dragon. Unfortunately, Beowulf’s sword failed him during the battle with the
