Cardiopulmonary Exercise Stress Test Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a test that checks how your heart and lungs react to exercise. This is called your exercise capacity. During this test, you will walk or run on a treadmill or pedal a stationary bike while tests are done on your heart and lungs. You may have this test to: • See why you are short of breath. • Check for exercise intolerance. • See how your lungs work. • See how your heart works. • Check for how you are responding to a heart or lung rehabilitation program. • See if you have a heart or lung problem. • See if you are healthy enough to have surgery. BEFORE THE PROCEDURE • Follow instructions from your doctor about what you cannot eat or drink.
