I am more drawn to qualitative research than I am to quantitative research, so having the opportunity to write in this way and assess a client in these terms is a preference for me. In support of the Career Construction Interview over the O*Net profiler from a counselor perspective is the ability to understand a client on a much deeper level and obtain a significant amount of information, which merely matching interests to careers cannot accomplish. By extracting life experiences, favored role models and preferred book/movie characters, a counselor is able to gain insight (perhaps unrealized by the client) into what may motivate a client to succeed in a career, their underlying values, with whom he/she may like to work with and what sort of environment may bring out the very best in what he/she has to offer. …show more content…
A further positive aspect of an informal assessment is the ability for a client to express him/herself in full sentences and evoke memories and aspects of his/her experiences that have mattered to him/her. In this way, he/she may experience the exercise as more meaningful and memorable. Finally, the Career Construction Interview may enable clients who have “undifferentiated profiles of interest,” that is, a set of interests that are not clearly defined, to gain some clarity through a deeper introspection into their preferences in a way that is less formal and anxiety provoking and more engaging (Niles & Bowlsbey, 2017, p. 143). By telling stories and gaining some insight into their passions, clients may find their interests become clear and well defined, and link to potential work environments they may not have considered
Careers guidance interviews in general are evolving in different sectors, for example in Higher Education they have moved from having hour long individual one to ones and evolved into ensuring individuals have access to information and group work.
Career assessments provide the counselor will information to help guide the client in deciding on what career that they would enjoy. This information would give the client an idea what line of work that they would enjoy being in. The client would find the job as a rewarding step, and what they would be interested in doing. It would be important to put assessments that are multicultural. When reviewing this assessment, this assessment did examine the gender components in Strong Interest Profile (Grutter & and Hammer, 2012). It would be important that the counselor would give assessments that are suitable for any culture. When deciding if an assessment is multicultural, the counselor would need to make sure that an assessment would not show any bias or show any cultural prejudice (Osborn, 2012). If the assessment does not mention if the assessment is multicultural, it would be important to
Questions about capability, usefulness, and worth arise, including the value they can bring to the workforce. In my opinion, it is important that assessments, and even counseling strategies make sense and connect with each other. Many of the subscales or information elicited by clients during the CBI may bring up conversations related to client negative self-talk. The Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI) operates within the framework of Cognitive Information Processing Theory, and addresses doubt and any cognitions associated with “career indecisiveness and assesses [clients’] ability to differentiate between their own perceptions of career options,” (Sheparis, Perepczka, & Limoges, 2012, p. 170). The CTI is a 48-question formatted utilizing Likert Scales, which utilizes a workbook to “help clients identify, challenge and reframe negative thoughts,” that are challenging clients’ ability to move forward in occupational decisions (Saunders, 2014, p.
In this paper I will be discussing a career counseling interview completed with an individual of a different gender. The interview was conducted in 90 minutes; we discussed the interviewee’s work experience, education, and training. In addition, we explored his recreational and leisure activities, and we looked at strengths and challenges related to his work.
“I feel sorry for the person who can't get genuinely excited about his work. Not only will he never be satisfied, but he will never achieve anything worthwhile” (Walter Chrysler). Deciding on what one wants to be in life can prove to be a demanding task. There are so many, yet limited, different opportunities in the world to have an excellent career and make a decent living while doing something one loves. It is limited because there are only a few specific career paths that someone could take to make good money. It is very difficult to make a fulfilling living being a garbage man. There are many different opportunities because, within these specific careers, there are usually various paths to take. Someone who has dreams to be a
I interviewed Officer Greenlee, who is a close friend. She works as a Correctional Officer for the Peoria County Jail, I interviewed her while we were on duty on Saturday, April 16th.
Career assessments are very beneficial when an individual is trying to determine what career path they may be wanting to take. Sometimes new information will become apparent and other times information that is already known to that individual will just be simply solidified. It is important to answer the questions as accurately to oneself as possible. My personal results only reassured me of what I already knew.
The second step explains each person is qualified for multiple career paths. Once the individual defines their unique characteristics, the career counselor can begin to create a list of potential career paths (Brown, 2016). Every person has the opportunity to excel at numerous jobs, but the hard task is locating which occupations makes the client happiest. As long as the person as no physical or mental limitations the career options are endless. There are a few job markets that do require a certain skillset. It is the responsibility of the career coach to identify those special traits, then see if the individual possesses those traits. The main goal for a counselor is to do no harm. The counselor can cause the individual harm
My selected mentor is Jerry Martin RN, BSN. He is a co-worker that has inspired me to return to school and that any dream is obtainable. Jerry has a degree in biology and was working as a ward clerk in our ER when I met him. He has a degree in biology and worked in finance before working at the hospital. Jerry states” I was unhappy with my career in finance and I realized I had drifted a long way from my education and my core belief. During a conference a guest speaker said “true happiness is found when you find the one thing you would do in life even if you did not get paid for it”. That was my “aha” moment.” G.M. Martin (personal communication, September 3,2013) Jerry entered nursing school in 2006 and graduated with a BSN in 2011. He is currently working toward a MSN and striving to be a FNP. He is a great nurse and it is a privilege to have him as a co-worker and my mentor.
Rather than wait and see a male counterpart prosper from such networks, Scott should search and join a female network with her company. Joining a women’s network within her company will give Scott a level playing
For the longest time I could not decide on a major and a career to study throughout college. When I came to Georgia Southern University I discovered that they had a major that was very interesting to me. Sport Management id the ideal major for my interest and me. Since I love sports I figured that this would be the career for me. A degree in Sport Management helps to prepare for success in sport related occupations.
Typically, when someone hears ‘medical field’, automatically you think of people with white lab coats and a stethoscope around their neck ready to take your vitals. Obviously this comes to mind because these doctors and surgeons are the face of the medical field, but in reality there is so much more. There are actually about 300 different occupations one can have in the health care field. A large part of that is nurses. Nurses are the basis of the medical field; they are almost as important as the patients themselves. They have always been a major part of our lives. Nurses have been with us since we first opened our eyes, from birth to broken bones, nurses were there. They have very difficult and extensive careers, they dedicate their lives to their work and to their patients. Some nurses spend long nights away from their family and friends to help others, at times their shifts can last as long as 24 hours. In my opinion nurses are the real super heroes, for this reason I have decided to pursue a major in nursing. I still have a lot to learn and many years of schooling to go, but personally its worth the wait.
I believe that this assessment is a valuable tool in the field of career counseling because it helps the counselors to have more information about the students and their overall wellbeing. By discussing each element counselors can identify the reasons for their struggles as they share their stories. It can help counselors to provide resources and information to improve their overall wellbeing especially with the career wellbeing. With this information, career counselors can refer them to different departments if more help is
