I have experienced great leadership styles that influenced my career decisions thus enhanced my work performance. Early Influences on Vocational Aspirations Unlike most early influences of family during childhood development, I was influenced by experience. I had brief opportunities to help bring comfort to a wounded dog and helped my mother when she was ill. Originally, I had inspirations of being a veterinarian, which developed into my care of people as well as animals particularly, dogs and cats. However, my family knew I was a caring individual who had a desire to heal the sick or wounded. I have always been interested in the human body and wanted to watch surgery being performed. My goal was to become a surgical nurse. The majority of my influences (early) came from nurse practitioners and doctors who furthered my aspirations and educated me about specific medical
When I was younger, I fell off my bed and cracked my head on the bed frame. I was sent to the emergency room and was given stitches. I had to keep going to the doctors for check-ups and me being a child, I was curious of the doctors and always asked them many questions about their occupation. At a young age I became very interested in the medical field. My mother being a surgical technologist and my ex-stepfather being a CRNA, I fell in love with the health care system and that’s when I knew I wanted to help others by becoming a nurse anesthetist.
“I feel sorry for the person who can't get genuinely excited about his work. Not only will he never be satisfied, but he will never achieve anything worthwhile” (Walter Chrysler). Deciding on what one wants to be in life can prove to be a demanding task. There are so many, yet limited, different opportunities in the world to have an excellent career and make a decent living while doing something one loves. It is limited because there are only a few specific career paths that someone could take to make good money. It is very difficult to make a fulfilling living being a garbage man. There are many different opportunities because, within these specific careers, there are usually various paths to take. Someone who has dreams to be a
My selected mentor is Jerry Martin RN, BSN. He is a co-worker that has inspired me to return to school and that any dream is obtainable. Jerry has a degree in biology and was working as a ward clerk in our ER when I met him. He has a degree in biology and worked in finance before working at the hospital. Jerry states” I was unhappy with my career in finance and I realized I had drifted a long way from my education and my core belief. Martin (personal communication, September 3,2013) Jerry entered nursing school in 2006 and graduated with a BSN in 2011. He is currently working toward a MSN and striving to be a FNP. As far back as I can remember, my days were spent filled with activities my mom planned to keep my siblings and I busy. From frequent zoo trips to weekly ballet lessons, every activity planned in our schedules had some sort of ulterior motive to shaping our future into the people our parents wanted us to become. While my brothers became interested in chemistry sets and robots, I was enrolled into dance classes, surrounded by animals, and spent days at work with my mother in the hospital in hopes of coaxing me out of my terribly shy shell and subconsciously breeding a veterinarian, or even better, a doctor. The older I became, the more my daily activities steered me in the direction of the medical field, I quickly learned to read the x-rays

Allport defines personality as ‘the dynamic organisation within the individual of those psychological systems that determine his unique adjustment to his environment’ (Allport, 1937). An individual’s unique personality traits and attributes are a powerful indicator of how he/she will interact with the work environment. The difference between average and outstanding employees can often be solely personality related. As the employee is the most valuable asset to the company, ‘selecting the right employee during the process is critical’ (Carbery and Cross, 2013, pp. 41-53)

From a young age I aspired to be more, and to achieve more. Everyone in my family is one way or another involved in the medical field. So I've been exposed to the day in and day outs of the health care system. When I was younger, and still living in nigeria my father would give me his books to read. At first reading medical books at a young age seemed unnecessary. Then I started to realize that I wanted to help people. At first I did not know how I wanted to do this, but as I grew older I realized that the best way for me to achieve this goal is to become a medical doctor. Which is why when an opportunity in high school came along to become a Certified Nurse Assistant, I quickly took it and got certified.
Based on the work of Carl Jung, Isabel Myers and Katherine Briggs developed the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator, a self-inventory geared toward helping individuals determine their personality types and individual areas of strength. “By helping people understand themselves, Myers and Briggs believed that they could help people select occupations that were best suited to their personality types and lead healthier, happier lives” (Cherry, 2015). This test, through helping me explore my own personality, likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses, and various preferences and compatibilities, has been instrumental in affirming my
