For my Career Exploration Project, I chose the career of legal secretary. In the practice of law, a legal secretary is person who works in the legal profession, typically assisting lawyers. I chose legal secretary, because I have been exposed and aware of this profession for a while. My mother has been involved in the legal secretarial field of work for about two and a half years now. Seeing lawyers and their assistants on television first interested me in the career, but my mother being a legal secretary furthered my interest. My mother took me to her place of business a few times. I wasn’t able to see lawyers in full action, but I got to see my mom and some other legal secretaries in meetings and conferences. In order to pursue a career …show more content…
Legal secretaries often work in law firms, corporate legal departments, government agencies, court houses, public interest firms, etc. Legal secretaries usually work 40 hours workweek, unless they work overtime or help lawyers with an upcoming case. It can be said that legal secretaries are used to a high-paced, stressful work environment. It is obvious that legal secretaries make good money, whether they’re just starting their career or with a great length of experience. Starting legal secretaries can earn a salary from $23,549 to $50,748. The average salary of a legal secretary can be from $38,000 to $74,000 or more, depending on the firm size and their years of experience. According to Salary.com, the median pay for legal secretaries as of October 30th, 2017 was $45,829. I am confident that this career is right for me, because I have a mutual interest and somewhat passion for working with or around lawyers. Having a legal secretary also boosts my confidence, because I know they can help me learn and adjust to this hectic business and give me their support. Even if I can’t become a legal secretary, there are relatable occupations to it, such as legal assistant, paralegal, receptionist, administrative assistant,
Paralegal assistant help assist lawyers, attorneys, and any other law firms. They do a mixture of duties which includes maintaining files, legal research, and manage documents. Paralegals work in a diversity of legal practice which can range from litigation and trial practice to tax, and real estate transactions, and estate planning. The employment of paralegal assistant is expected to grow from 2014 to 2024. Being a paralegal assistant is a good career because of career path, work will be diversified, and benefits.
It’s projected to grow 8 percent from 2014 to 2024 as fast as average of all occupations. Paralegal are trained in legal matters and assists lawyers with researching facts for cases, preparing documents, and preparing for trial. Some the strengths on researching and investigating facts or laws related to case. I’m pretty organized files and documents.
The career I chose to undertake as my profession is that of a mechanical engineer. Why do I want to become a mechanical engineer? Well, for starters, I would be able to design, build and possibly repair many various machines and other technologies that are complex. These technologies can range from being already in use on a global scale to new, futuristic designs that are highly technical. Also, this career includes being a sort of jack-of-all-trades, where I would possess knowledge in mathematics, physics, etc. Finally, this career offers me the chance to expand outside my immediate area since mechanical engineers are well desired around the globe as well.
The relationship of the NCDA to the American Counseling Association is that the “NCDA is a founding division of the American Counseling Association and collaborates with the ACA to jointly represent the interest of counselors in congress and in the national legislative process” (NCDA, 2015).
Having previous experience working in the legal field as a secretary/assistant, I can say for sure that you are constantly put in situations that are very close to crossing that line. “A paralegal must use discretion and professional judgment commensurate with knowledge and experience but must not render independent legal judgment in place of an attorney.” (NALA Code of Ethics, 2007, Cannon 4). The entire legal team is should follow required ethical behavior, but the duty to supervise ultimately is the attorney’s responsibility. A paralegal should make it clear to clients from the start that you are a legal assistant, and if needed explain your duties and limitations, as some people really are not aware of a paralegals limitation. The State of Pennsylvania has addressed concerns that the title “paralegal” is misinterpreted by the public as being a person who is authorized to practice law. In all the confusion of a busy law office, the unauthorized practice of law can easily be crossed. Even outside the office,
Some of the most prevalent disadvantages to an occupation in this field are the hours necessary. As a CPA with a large accounting firm I would expect a typical work week of 40 to 50 hours. But, during the tax season, January through April, it could be as many as 70 hours per week (S. Westfield, personal interview, August 1, 2008). Since I have already been employed within the accounting industry for some time now, my family and I are used to the long hours and fluctuation during busy times.
Through my research I have found multiple jobs that interest me, but there are two that stick out the most: Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialist and Psychiatric Technician. Before researching, I had no idea about these jobs, but now I know good deal about them. After researching, I found out in what settings people in these positions work, how much they make on average annually, what their job entitles, what the education requirements are, what the growth rates for these occupations are. The jobs’ settings are very similar, but their salaries and duties are very different. I was able to find that if one just looks at the average, annual wage for each occupation, Psychiatric Technicians make about $28,000 while Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialists make about $34,000. The growth rate for Rehabilitation Counselors, in general, is faster than Psychiatric Technicians, but only by four percent. The overall tasks of each occupation, however, differ greatly from each other.
1.What is one short term goal you have on your agenda to achieve in the next couple of weeks to a month?
A career as a solicitor is open to anyone and the Law Society is actively promoting diversity in entrants to the profession. In recent years more women than men have been qualifying as solicitors and at least 18 per cent of people qualifying have been from minority ethnic groups.
When I was young I wanted to become a teacher; however, that all changed throughout the years. What had motivated me to become a teacher was all the supplies they had like the whiteboards, the markers, and the construction paper. It seemed fun and interesting to me to have all the supplies. I no longer wish to become a teacher. As I grew older I realized that I wanted to do something that has me going to places, seeing new things, speaking with diverse individuals, and for that reason I chose to be involved in Real estate.
To what area of law I recommend to pursue, that is up to the individual and what they want to do. If your sole goal is to make lots of money and you don't care how you do it being a plaintiffs attorney on personal injury you have The potential to make a lot of money but, in my opinion money is not a worthy goal. Yes I want to get paid for what I do but you should do what you want to do. If you have a passion for constitutional law then you should be a constitutional lawyer. If you want to represent people that you feel are wrongly accused then you should be a criminal defense attorney. It is up to the individual to decide what best suits them.
“I feel sorry for the person who can't get genuinely excited about his work. Not only will he never be satisfied, but he will never achieve anything worthwhile” (Walter Chrysler). Deciding on what one wants to be in life can prove to be a demanding task. There are so many, yet limited, different opportunities in the world to have an excellent career and make a decent living while doing something one loves. It is limited because there are only a few specific career paths that someone could take to make good money. It is very difficult to make a fulfilling living being a garbage man. There are many different opportunities because, within these specific careers, there are usually various paths to take. Someone who has dreams to be a
Typically, when someone hears ‘medical field’, automatically you think of people with white lab coats and a stethoscope around their neck ready to take your vitals. Obviously this comes to mind because these doctors and surgeons are the face of the medical field, but in reality there is so much more. There are actually about 300 different occupations one can have in the health care field. A large part of that is nurses. Nurses are the basis of the medical field; they are almost as important as the patients themselves. They have always been a major part of our lives. Nurses have been with us since we first opened our eyes, from birth to broken bones, nurses were there. They have very difficult and extensive careers, they dedicate their lives to their work and to their patients. Some nurses spend long nights away from their family and friends to help others, at times their shifts can last as long as 24 hours. In my opinion nurses are the real super heroes, for this reason I have decided to pursue a major in nursing. I still have a lot to learn and many years of schooling to go, but personally its worth the wait.
Lawyers have quite chance of advancement possibilities and employment outlook. Most beginning lawyers start in salaried positions as associates in law firms or as research assistants or law clerks to experienced lawyers or judges. After several years of experience, they may become partners in their firms or set up their own practices. Some lawyers go into politics or become judges. Some become prosecutors or district attorneys. About seven hundred and thirty-five thousand lawyers practice nationwide. The demand for lawyers is expected to grow as fast as the average for all jobs through 2014. However, many people are entering the profession, so competition for available jobs may be stiff. Lawyers who want to work for law firms will find the best opportunities in big cities, while those who are interested in setting up their own practices will find more opportunities in small towns or suburban areas. There are also
corporation itself. These in-house law departments are usually headed by the general counsel, who acts as the chief attorney. On average, there are about seventeen attorneys and five paralegals per corporate law department. The paralegals typically have high pay and very good benefits. They do not have many clerical tasks to complete, and a career ladder for paralegals exists. They tend to have a narrowly defined role in corporate law departments.
