A Career in Pediatric Oncology Oncology is the study and treatment of cancer. Cancer is a disease that develops when normal cells in certain parts of the body start to grow abnormally and continuously. It has been a plague on human life for a while; in fact, the earliest evidence of the disease was found in ancient Egyptian manuscripts dating back to 1600 BC. It is currently the most diagnosed disease in the world. Pediatric Oncology is a subspecialty of the practice that focuses on the treatment of cancer in children. In earlier days, because information on the disease was limited, treatment for children was almost inexistent. However, in the 1940s a doctor named Sidney Farber made a milestone in the treatment of these children by administering …show more content…

The lesson a reader can take away is learning how hard people push to find a cure and the developing progress in cancer knowledge. Everyday people like Farber write informational articles and use advance technology to develop a cure. Although cancer is difficult to cure in any case, the easiest to cure is pediatric. The doctors at Harvard use the developing sophisticated medicine for the childhood cancer to help solve mysteries to other cancers. But because each genetic code and layers of tissues that makeup a human is different, it is impossible to have just one medicine that cures all cancer. Doctors push themselves to find

When it comes to cancer, so much of the world’s knowledge is based on statistics. For example, each day forty-six children, or more than two full classrooms of kids, are diagnosed with cancer and one out of every three hundred thirty people will develop cancer before the age of twenty. The simplest and most important of these statistics is this, “Cancer is the number one cause of death by disease in children.” Pediatric cancer takes the lives of more people than the number of children who die from asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and pediatric AIDS combined! About one thousand three hundred and eighty children are expected to die from cancer this year alone. Although the cure rate of children with cancer is steadily increasing for most childhood cancers over the past five years, the number of children who will die is overwhelming and unacceptable.
I know all of you have a large amount of work that is time sensitive and really needs to be completed ASAP. Below I have come up with a schedule for everyone to have at least 1 hour a day off the phone( abandonment rate must remain under 6%). With so much work that everyone is assigned to, it can become a little overwhelming. Raquel Hayes will be training Pam today in Oncology. Am I doing this because I have to or because I want to? The nursing profession asks this question daily. It is an extremely challenging, yet doubly rewarding career. I would like to volunteer at McLeod Health Clarendon because I believe that it is a wonderful opportunity for me. Personally, I have always had a passion for helping and caring for other people. Because of that, I decided that I wanted to work in the healthcare field. Now I believe this is my opportunity to experience what it is like to work in a health care facility, along with helping and caring for others in need. Also, I feel that it will help me decide exactly what I want to do in the healthcare field. As of right now, I am deciding between becoming a Pharmacist or a Pediatric Oncology Nurse. In my opinion, choosing between all the different professions in health care is difficult. Especially when I possess no real life experience about
A cancer diagnosis today is devastating- depending on the kind of cancer and stage, it could be killer. Unfortunately, 60 years ago humans did not have the same technology and medicine available to combat this awful disease as we do today. Most people can argue though that some of the worst cases of cancer happen to children, primarily leukemia. Emil “Jay” Freireich changed the entire medical industry with his treatment to leukemia as a doctor in the 1950s. Acute leukemia from 1950-1959 had a 5 year survival rate of 1%. One of the main reasons these children would die so fast was because they were bleeding from nearly ever orifice. Freireich was convinced the reason the children were bleeding was because of the lack

I am looking for many things in a university, the first thing is a university that has a prestigious science and pre-med department. I want to pursue a career in these fields to become a pediatric oncologist because studying cancer and serving others is something that I am very passionate about. My grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer my sophomore year of highschool, and this wrecked my world. I was raised in a very family oriented environment and I have a large close knit family, so hearing the news about my grandmother broke my heart. My grandmother has fought excruciatingly hard to beat cancer for the past two years and has come very close. Unfortunately, all of the cancer is not completely gone from her body. From that moment forward,

Becoming a pediatric surgeon doesn’t just happen overnight. To become one, you need to go to medical school, and need a bachelor’s degree to go to medical school (BLS).Many years of school are needed before you can even step foot into a hospital. Once a bachelors degree is equipped, you can apply for medical school. Medical school isn’t all in a classroom. Four years of medical school are needed (healthychildren.org). Two of those years are in a classroom, the other two in hospitals, watching surgeries and observing different cases (learningpath.org). Still, more schooling is needed. Every doctor has to go through residency. Residency takes place in an actual hospital, where you learn from surgeons. To become a pediatric surgeon, you need
They are concerned with the health of infants to teenagers. Performing tests to obtain information on the patient's conditions is a main thing pediatricians do. They vary from treatments to medications to vaccinations. Guiding parents and their children into good health diets and hygiene is a big trait to keep up in someone's life, and a pediatrician is the top supporter and assistance to help in those areas. A pediatrician does many things to help out someone's life and I want to achieve the same element. Also by gaining the knowledge of what is the best college, and what a pediatrician’s salary
