Victims of abuse feel alone, lost, and almost always feel helpless, but wouldn’t it be amazing if you could single handily help a survivor recover? This is exactly what many psychologists and therapists around the country do every day. Many colleges offer amazing programs for this profession and after comparing University or Texas Rio Grande Valley, Central Washington University, and University of Chicago based on my criteria of location, my choice of work, and tuition, UTRGV would be the best choice in helping to pursue a career in therapy. Although it is not said directly, many survivors of abuse do not fully feel safe talking about their abuse; but with therapy you can help them open up and recover. Therapists have a …show more content…
The college that is best for this profession is UTRGV. UTRGV is here in the valley and has an extensive psychology/therapy program. They don’t just have one specific field, instead they express that “…the field is considerably broader…” (University of Texas RGV) These fields can be anything from clinical psychology to abnormal psychology. The field also goes over parts of psychology like child development, social interactions and many more. (University of Texas RGV) The department of psychology has plenty of opportunities to do research and experiments. They take this department very seriously because “Demographic analysis show that there is a shortage of … psychologists in the area.” (University of Texas RGV) At UTRGV you can get anything from an associate’s degree to a doctoral in psychology or therapy and per the bureau of labor statics you don’t need any work experience prior to the job, most psychologists get a doctoral degree, but you can still only have a masters or bachelors. (Bureau of Labor Statistics) They offer programs for many certifications in the psychology field. “At the graduate level, we offer master of arts degree in clinical psychology and master of science in experimental psychology” (University of Texas RGV) With certain certifications you won’t just have to be a therapist, you can also teach too. “as a professional with a MA degree in psychology, one would also …show more content…
These schools, unlike UTRGV are out of state which would make the tuition more than it already is, also housing would be difficult. Staying near home is better than moving out of state to somewhere the attending student has never been before. Central Washington University “offers training to students seeking licensure to practice as a school psychologist in the public school” (Central Washington University) and they also “Offer EDU degree in school psychology which upon completion leads to eligibility for certification as a school psychologist in the state of Washington.” (Central Washington University) Although these are great certifications, CWU isn’t as diverse as UTRGV and only mainly has programs with being a public-school counselor but “…students also benefit from… graduate programs in counseling and applied behavioral analysis.” (Central Washington University) which can benefit in working with abused children. While UTRGV has a whole section of the department of psychology dedicated to working with abuse victims. At CWU the EDS program takes 3 years of full study and a 1200-hour internship at a public school. (Central Washington University) along with taking regular classes they can also “…work full time in a public-school setting.” (Central Washington University) At UTRGV there is no need for internships or extra un-needed hours of
Becoming a Licensed Family Therapist/Marriage Counselor is a career goal. Currently, I am studying to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, however, after accomplishing the bachelor’s degree, I will continue on to get a master’s degree. Focusing on my studies is a priority over full-time employment, meanwhile,
family and relationships among relatives or spouses. Marriage and family therapists usually have an office of their own, but spend a majority of their time meeting with various patients, being a socially-driven job. There is not much room for growth because the entry-level position is very similar to a seasoned therapist’s position; a counselor is expected to have all of the knowledge and skills necessary at the time of being hired.
The Psychology Major’s Handbook by Tara L. Kuther gives a list of positions that Psychology majors can obtain with a bachelor’s degree. This list is helpful because only one-fourth of psychology majors go to graduate school immediately following graduation (Kuther, 2015, p. 170). Within this list, the occupation that caught my eye was that of an Occupational Therapist. Though one cannot be an Occupational Therapist with only a bachelor’s degree, one can be an Occupational Therapist Assistant (OTA) with a bachelor’s degree. With other training and licensure, an individual with a bachelor’s in psychology can work in the field of Occupational Therapy because psychology teaches one human service skills. Employers may not understand why a psychology major would be eligible for a job like Occupational Therapy; thus it is the responsibility of the applicant to explain their eligibility for the desired position (Kuther, 2015, p. 171).
As an Autistic Behavior Therapist Trainee, I am constantly teaching Makena, the girl with Autism, life skills and hope that one day they will stick with her. Each day at work I interact with Makena and am able to see the progress she has made. One day in November, I arrived at work and started the therapy with Makena. To my surprise, she acknowledged me and said "Hi Ashley" without any prompting! Knowing that I was able to successfully teach Makena a new, seemingly insignificant, life skill, made me so proud of her. The feeling of successfully teaching is
I would encourage students to apply for Mental Health Technician (unpaid intern is easier to get in) position at any location, since it is a direct contact where you can see how therapists

The social make up the mental health field is a predominantly female occupation. Currently, men represent only twenty percent of psychology degrees earned today, down by 50 percent from only four decades ago (Rubinstein, Noah. 2013). According to the Bureau of Labor Statics, the majority of mental health counselors and therapist work individually in family services at 21 percent. The typical entry level education for a mental health counselor or therapist is a master’s
My Dream of Becoming a Mental Health Counselor Becoming a counselor has been a dream for me for some time now. Being able to assist women, men, and children seems like the best job for me due to the empathy that I share with many individuals. A mental health counselor is not just a job, it is an opportunity to help people and give back to the community that we share. As a military spouse who has dealt with multiple deployments and meeting other wives has given me an opportunity to help them get through tough times by hearing people out and providing advice to keep going. Many of the women I have met have children which needed attention and guidance to deal with the hardship that one encounters.
I want to major in psychology because I plan on going to graduate school, earning a PhD, and becoming a child psychologist. Specifically speaking, I want to work with young children (around the ages of 0-7) who have experienced trauma of some kind and help them to recover. I have always wanted a job where I can work directly with people and I love working with children so I think being a child psychologist is the perfect fit for me. Originally my plan was to become a prenatal genetic counselor but after emailing and talking with some real life genetic counselors I realized that the job was not hands on enough for me and that genetic counselors only meet with their patients once or twice.

Before postgraduate work can be started, the student must receive a bachelor’s in psychology and fulfill the requirements listed for the psychology program they wish to enter. Once a bachelor’s degree is achieved, a psychology major has the choice of either obtaining their master's or their doctorate. When earning a master’s a student is accepted into the college of his or her choice, and usually completes the program within 2 years, or longer. If a master's is earned, the student may go on to become an assistant in a clinical setting underneath someone who has a doctorate in psychology, but they will not be able to do any high level of work. If a student chooses to obtain a doctorate they are again, accepted into the program of their choice, although admission is very competitive. Once accepted into the doctorate program the student serves about 2-4 years where they receive training and guidance in a hospital setting, but it all depends on the program they enter. Having a doctorate in psychology will open the doors for soon-to-be clinical psychologists, and offers a higher job title, certification, and higher pay. Whether a student chooses a master's or a doctorate, a large amount of psychology classes must be taken. More than likely when a student is an a doctorate program, they are required to fulfill a 1-2 year internal ship of professional experience, as cited from
Some careers that are related clinical psychology are school, child or family social workers, therapists and counselors, but the most common career people often confused with psychology is psychiatry. Both psychiatrists and psychologists go through the
It is my belief that in order to be a successful counselor, you must have the skills and ability to listen; especially without judgement. My desire is to work mainly with adolescents and their families inside and outside of schools; I will focus on resolving the identity versus role confusion conflict. I have enjoyed learning about the different techniques and theories of counseling; I am sure each theory is very useful in many ways. I can see myself using different parts of each in my future career as a Mental Health Counselor. However, there are particular theories and techniques that seem to fit into the practice of counseling in the schools more than others. I am particularly drawn to the practicality of Cognitive Behavior Therapy,
