Career Research Assignment

When I was young I wanted to become a teacher; however, that all changed throughout the years. What had motivated me to become a teacher was all the supplies they had like the whiteboards, the markers, and the construction paper. It seemed fun and interesting to me to have all the supplies. I no longer wish to become a teacher. As I grew older I realized that I wanted to do something that has me going to places, seeing new things, speaking with diverse individuals, and for that reason I chose to be involved in Real estate.

Some of the most prevalent disadvantages to an occupation in this field are the hours necessary. As a CPA with a large accounting firm I would expect a typical work week of 40 to 50 hours. But, during the tax season, January through April, it could be as many as 70 hours per week (S. Westfield, personal interview, August 1, 2008). Since I have already been employed within the accounting industry for some time now, my family and I are used to the long hours and fluctuation during busy times.

The career I chose to undertake as my profession is that of a mechanical engineer. Why do I want to become a mechanical engineer? Well, for starters, I would be able to design, build and possibly repair many various machines and other technologies that are complex. These technologies can range from being already in use on a global scale to new, futuristic designs that are highly technical. Also, this career includes being a sort of jack-of-all-trades, where I would possess knowledge in mathematics, physics, etc. Finally, this career offers me the chance to expand outside my immediate area since mechanical engineers are well desired around the globe as well.

“I feel sorry for the person who can't get genuinely excited about his work. Not only will he never be satisfied, but he will never achieve anything worthwhile” (Walter Chrysler). Deciding on what one wants to be in life can prove to be a demanding task. There are so many, yet limited, different opportunities in the world to have an excellent career and make a decent living while doing something one loves. It is limited because there are only a few specific career paths that someone could take to make good money. It is very difficult to make a fulfilling living being a garbage man. Prior to writing this essay, I sat down with my mom to come up with ideas on stories that have made me who I am today. That is when I realized I have made more personal growth in the past four years of my high school career that I have before this period of time. I am ending my high school career with more knowledge than I ever expected.

A man once said “The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future in life.” The California state university will send me on my path to my future. California State university, the Northridge society, one of the best technology schools and should allow me to have the best education.

What is the importance of goals? Do goals help you plan out your future? Or possibly give you something to work for? To me goals provide a map of what I want to do, how I’m going to do it, and why I want to do it. Goals also provide a sense of accomplishment when you finally get to finish whatever you’ve been working towards. The need for goals in life is clear, because without goals, we wouldn’t get much done. Simply because of the fact that there wouldn’t be anything to work towards, and no structure to our future. One of my most important goals is to graduate college, to get a career in psychology. This goal is extremely important to me because of the fact that not many people in my family have even finished high school.

Biology is under the college of Arts and Sciences and is categorized in the Biological Sciences department. The main chair/director is Dr. Sam Atkinson with an assistant, Kendra Donahue. The Biological Science department is located in the Biology Building 210.

I was raised by my wonderful mother, and God family in Burton, Michigan along with my older brother and sister. My career goal of becoming a physical therapist stemmed from a growth defect I experienced during middle school that my primary doctors simply ignored. It was not until I went to a physical therapist that I was given a chance to get the medical care I needed that led to a corrective surgery. Once I was healed, I continued playing sports as my family instilled a love for athletics that will never go away. A drive that pushed me through my 14 year soccer career that was a large factor in who I am today. These experiences gave me a form of discipline that has carried into my college career which began at Adrian College, but an injury I suffered during my senior year in high school ended my time on the field, and my inability to play soccer at Adrian College.

I chose to research a career in Health Psychology, focusing somewhat on clinical work. I chose this career path in particular because of my major and emphasis in Health Psychology; I wanted to know what the opportunities, benefits, and requirements were for pursuing this specific field within psychology. I was made aware of this option as a major emphasis during my first semester at BYU-Idaho, and I knew at that point that I wanted to go on to doctoral studies and possibly medical school, so I switched from a General Psychology emphasis to Health Psychology. I also wanted to know if there were specializations under Health Psychology that would fit with my personal interest in addiction recovery.

Throughout my life, I always wondered what my profession would be when I grew up. My first choice was to be a nurse because I love to help people and make sure that they are well taken care of. When I reached high school, my thoughts about nursing tapered off because other careers interested me even more, such as becoming a lawyer. As I began researching more and more about lawyers, I talked to my work based learning teacher at school, and she recommended a part time job at a law firm. I began calling around, and entering my senior year of high school, I received my first job at a law firm. The first days of working at the law firm, I was extremely excited because I thought that I would be one step closer to reaching my goals as an attorney. I had the privilege of seeing what the attorneys did throughout the day, however as my experience in the firm progressed, my interest in becoming an attorney dwindled. I then realized I was back to square one and was extremely discouraged, because I did not know what I wanted to do with my life.

Since the beginning of junior year in high school, my desire to graduate and become successful has increased with every passing day. My parents are my motivation. My mother suffered greatly, yet continued to work hard to provide a better life for her four children. My father, who worked since the age of 9, worked everyday of his life to support his family, even if he could only find small jobs. One day I want to be able to return the love and support that they have given me, since the day of my birth. Graduating from college, being independent, and enjoying life are my top priorities. I am interested in a career that is both steady and exciting.

I rather do something I love for no money at all than do something every day for money that I am not happy or enjoying. I believe that if I do something that I love to do than I will be enhance and do my best work and if I’d doing something I don’t enjoy then I will not do very well or as good as doing something I love to do and have some type of passion for. Before working with the SECME projects and activities of the bottle rockets, building of the bridges and mousetrap car, I initially wanted to go into the career of biomedical engineering because of I wanted to do something in the medical industry but I didn’t really want to be a doctor or a nurse. We have enough of those spots filled already. I wanted to be able to help patients and people from “behind the scenes” and care for people without having to be seen physically, but people will get the understanding that somebody had to have created a medication to help me and my sickness. As I worked through the SECME activities with my group, I began to see some new skills and points of interest in my career path. The career that I think best suits me is a marketing manager or head manager of an engineering or any company, where I would be able to presentations, portfolios and other resources for the sponsors of a certain project or the company who would like to work with the company. I would be able to use my organizational skills to put these resources together and present them. I would also have the advantage of working with the engineers and verifying their work and product which they would like to present and showcase to the consumers. I would be able to see their process in which they created the prototype and how they would like to improve what is already in

One of the crucial moments in my life was the decision I had to take; as to what I was going to do next in life. Having completed my Advanced Level in 2013, I realized that it was not the end of my career as a student. I needed strong academic foundation along with other soft skills to meet the challenges and survive in this commercial world as a successful individual. In view of these thoughts, I was unable to make a firm decision as to what my career direction would be. After a month or so of various discussions with my parents, friends and other learned people I was able to reason out the best choice for me.
