Tram Duong Case 1: CareGroup Background After five major hospitals in Massachusetts merged together in 1996, CareGroup became the second largest collection of hospitals in its region. As the hospitals needed to increase their contracting power against health maintenance organizations, improve the quality of care while simultaneously decreasing costs and remain profitable in a complex price war, merging was their best option to remain successful and to provide the best treatment for patients. However, the hospitals initially experienced revenue loss over seven years as the group’s operations were decentralized and unstandardized. To remedy the issue, a new, cutting edge information technology system was developed successfully in 2002 and implemented. …show more content…
Due to mergers, the network became out of spec. These types of factors should be monitored so the network can adapt before problems occur. Lesson #7: There are limits to customer-centric responsiveness. Customer requests cannot be given total control over the network, but should be judged to determine their impact before being implemented. This way no area becomes too much of a burden. Lesson #8: Have backup procedures in which you can have confidence. Due to their preparedness for Y2K, CareGroup could continue operations despite slowing down, which is something to emulate with hopefully more robust contingency and recovery plans in the future. Lesson #9: Component redundancy is not enough; you need alternative access methods. As CareGroup’s access methods failed, additional methods could have limited the extent of the outage. Alternative access methods should be built into a system to prevent additional downtime that can be prevented in some way. Lesson #10: Life-cycle-manage your network components. As the rate of technological improvements increase, network components should be used for their life cycle before switching them out. As shown with CareGroup’s major problem with an outdated component, old parts can hinder a network and should be replaced according to a schedule with an adequate budget to diminish negative
Seventy percent of seniors over 65 who require support to remain independent have long-term health needs. While tens of millions of seniors are cared for by loving family members, that care often takes a mighty toll on the senior and the caregiver. In many of these cases, there comes a point when the discussion turns to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Thankfully, there is another choice. With care services from Comfort Keepers, your senior loved one can maintain the freedom and independence of living at home, and the family can receive the peace of mind that comes from knowing their loved one is receiving the care and support they need to safely age in place.

The healthcare industry consists of many strengths and weaknesses during the improvement of patient safety, efficient operations, reduction of medical errors, and ensuring that they provide timely access to all patient information. This will have to still comply with all legal guidelines as they control costs and protect patient privacy. The adoption of advanced information technology is a popular strategy being used in the healthcare industry because it allows their weaknesses to be progressively diminished as they gain and use the opportunities necessary as an analytical tool. This would allow their capabilities to be further developed with the new technologies and processes used as they unify the adoption of IT standards. In order to stay competitive within the healthcare industry, then there must be specific actions and measures that must be taken to ensure a positive outcome. This includes external opportunities to increase the capability of the IT infrastructure in a national environment as the growth of industry standards are met in order to decrease the pressured threats of legal compliance through patient trust and the high cost of IT. The growing recognition of strategic leadership often leads to both improved financial stability and contact accessibility of the system. Some challenges that may occur within the healthcare system may cause issues in a hospital setting because of the centralized society of an organization. This is because of the different visions and
The high cost of healthcare continues to rise and many in the United States are optimistic for health information technology to reduce and improve our current situation. Health IT encompasses a broad array of new technologies designed to manage and share health-related information. When properly implemented, these systems can help coordinate patient care, reduce medical errors, and improve administrative efficiency. Therefore, implementing a Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) will help the National Health Information Network (NHIN) achieve their goals in improving quality of care for the citizens of the United States. Thus, in order for the health IT to deliver on its promise, several obstacles must be overcome.
Recently, many healthcare organizations are merging and creating partnerships with other health organizations with an aim of ensuring long-term financial feasibility. According to records and statistics, the number of hospitals that merged between 2009 and 2012 doubled significantly. According to an article that was published by the New York Times, the number of hospitals and health facilities merging is expected to increase in the next few years. Mergers have brought about manifold changes in the health sector in terms of connecting data from frantic electronic health records and in making the healthcare systems interoperable (Informatics in healthcare, 1992).

Mergers have become normal practice in the health care industry by creating a larger hospital system that provides broader services with the focus on lowering healthcare cost and being economically profitable with keeping in line with regulatory guidance. A merger happens when two or more organizations agree to join together and become one organization. One or more organizations essentially must dissolve for this to happen. Sometimes both organizations dissolve and take on a completely new name as in this case of the merging of the two competing hospitals. (McClure, n.d.) Hospitals along with health systems are following the same trend to merge with other hospitals, this movement has continue to gain momentum and appears to be the future trend in the health care industry due to high operating hospital cost. In a survey done in 2012 regarding hospital maintaining independence only 13% plan not to align with other hospitals or health care systems, while the other 87% plan some type of merger with another hospital or health care system. (Hospital Mergers and Acquisitions, 2013)
