Discuss the role of the Holy Spirit in the counseling process as it relates to both the pastoral counselor and counselee alike
In the book Caring for People God’s Way written by Clinton, Hart, and Ohlschlager, they tell us on page 15 that “In Christian counseling, the Holy Spirit is the third person in every counseling situation.” The Holy Spirit is to be our guide and teacher. He will provide new insight for the counselor in ways that are more effective and will generate a response from the counselee.
The Holy Spirit is simultaneously operative in the mind of the counselor as well as the counselee. In John 16:8 Jesus says, “And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment” (KJV). The counselor is
This paper is comprised of information gathered in order establish and identify ethical boundaries and guidelines that are to be adhered by this counselor. This study also includes information that is needed to obtain necessary licensing and training to ensure proper pastoral care training is received. The importance of this is critical in the rendering of pastoral care. Goals of the counselor as well what is expected of the counselor by his church will also be expressed within this paper. Most importantly the foundation of
Siang-Yang Tan, a psychologist that has been in the field for over 25 years wrote a journal on the Use of Prayer and Scripture in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. This journal “covers the appropriate and ethical use of prayer, including inner healing prayer, and Scripture in a Christian approach to cognitive-behavioral therapy” (Tan, 2007). In this journal he expounded on the methods he used through his experience to ethically provide prayer and scripture in a suitable fashion. He also went a little further to talk about how, “Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most empirically supported treatments (ESTs) available for a wide variety of psychological disorders” (Tan, 2007). Tan described in part on how the principles of prayer can be merged in the therapy process and in certain circumstances have value in the client’s needs through their receptiveness.
According to McMinn (2011), suggested that the counselor pray silently and allow the Holy Spirit to guide them in session and that counselors should be cautious about using prayer and how it may affect the

No matter what reason a person choses to attend counseling, the main objective is to help people become whole and ultimately making them become better individuals. Everyone desires to live life of peaceful and serenity and desires to get rid of whatever, internal conflict they have preventing them from becoming whole. In the book Caring for People God’s Way, the book talks about caring for people but with Christ. How can a Christian counselor help a person who may or may not have strong beliefs in God? The way that a person does this is by reading scriptures, being secular to Christian, and keeping the person in checks and balances. In essence, a person need to Trust the Lord with all our heart and believing in his will. Everything that God
In effect, Mark McMinn has utilized theology, spirituality and psychology to help individuals in enhancing diverse concepts of their lives. Notably, the author articulates clearly that the counselor should be strong particularly in their personal spirituality. Hence, this is important because it is the only way to assist their clients appropriately in the counseling process. The author also expounds on various precautions, which counselors must take, as well as the limitations. Subsequently, it can be challenging to incorporate the counselor’s spirituality especially in their counseling sessions since many of them are not confident since they lack adequate knowledge about the Bible. Thus, this will result to
Spirituality and religion are two important concepts in many individuals’ lives, especially those who are seeking counseling. Unfortunately, many counselors lack the training to properly and ethically tackle these imperative issues with their clients. Day by day, spiritual and religious concerns may be pertinent to the reasons the clients is initially seeking counseling. These areas might be ones of conflict with self, concern with others, and/or sources of strength and support; whatever the reason, counselors need to be professionally equipped to address these issues. Sadly, most counselors have little, if any training, in this area which can eventually cause ethical dilemmas. This paper will address the ethical issues in dealing with spirituality
In our Christian walk we need godly counsel from time to time, for without direction even a ship wouldn’t know where to go. It is sad that many people are misled because of lack and ungodly counsel. I know a time in my life, when I needed godly counsel, I prayed and asked God to send me a mentor, someone that would guide me. One day as I was praying for a mentor, I heard the Lord say to me, you don’t need to search for a mentor, because you already have a mentor. He is The Holy Spirit, He will counsel you in everything that you need to know. God has given us His Holy Spirit, so that we might learn to obey His word and fulfil His will. On our own we are not able to accomplish much, but when we receive the Holy Spirit, we are able to accomplish things that we would have not on our own. The Holy Spirit trains us in the ways of the Lord, counsels us into the spiritual truth of God.God has given us His Holy Spirit, so that we might learn to obey His word and fulfil His will. On our own we are not able to accomplish much, but when we receive the Holy Spirit, we are able to accomplish things that
Nouthetic counseling recognizes the important role that the Holy Spirit plays in the counselee; even more important than the counselor himself. The counselor is more of a conduit allowing for the Holy Spirit to make his way in. Change and the heart are central issues and the Holy Spirit is key in changing the heart. Substantial change in a person is tied to the Holy Spirit working from within. No man, no matter how godly or educated, is capable of giving God-glorifying counsel without the work of the Holy Spirit. The scriptures are used as final authority (not the counselor 's opinions, experience, or education). The Holy Spirit then opens the heart of the counselee so that he or she will be able to comprehend the Scriptures and apply it to their lives.
The Holy Spirit plays a very vital role in the lives of each and every believer; He can strengthen us with a strength that we cannot even begin to muster up in ourselves. He can bring us joy that we cannot even begin to find in the things of this world. He can bring peace to our lives more than anything that we can ever find on this earth. “The Holy Spirit which is primarily an energizing process, is also a revealing, refining, consuming, illuminating process, and one by which we are made to glow with love to God, and love to man, and love to souls.”
He aligns a great deal of thrilling miscellaneous theological and psychological perspectives. McMinn shows that if the counselor misuses prayer and Scripture, then the results could be bad for the client. He encourages the counselor to be sufficient in his faith, so that he or she could provide the client with proper Christian
The act of salvation allows for all of humanity to enter into a state of redemption, enabling one to engage in an intimate relationship with God. However, the sensation of worthiness colors a person’s perceptual abilities, either in a positive or negative light, which influences one’s relations with God and others. The inability to calm one’s spirit can hinder spiritual growth, which include the elements of justification and sanctification. Thus, from a Christian worldview, it is important to learn how to rest in God’s promises, while simultaneously working through life’s tribulations. Christian counselors can assist with a person’s earthly circumstances and spiritual journey via the utilization of biblical principles.
Where is the Holy Spirit? The Lord said, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--for he lives with you and will be in you” (John 14:16).
The Bible talks about several roles that the Holy Spirit plays in the lives of people today. The first thing that the Holy Spirit does is he provides conviction of sin to all people. John 16:8 said, “And when he comes, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment”. Also, the Holy Spirit works in several ways for many believers that follow Christ. One of the roles that He works is to serve as a comforter and a helper in our daily life. In John 14:16-17 this means that there is someone that is helping us and guiding us and encouraging us during difficult time of
Although there are various approaches to counselling, we can put them into two groups: secular counselling and Biblical counselling. The former utilises various humanistic and psychological methods. Biblical counselling on the other hand, uses the Scriptures (the Bible), and only the Scriptures, as a means to understanding and resolving the issues of life.
