My Extraordinary Weekend In Grand Rapids The weekend of April 17, 2015, was the best and most nerve racking weekend of my life. All of the carpentry skills I learned from the day I was born until now were about to be tested against fifteen other Career Centers in the State of Michigan. Skills USA is the event I was attending, which is an organization that puts the Skills of students to the test. It's not just one trade, it's all different kinds such as; Culinary, Cosmetology, Carpentry, Auto Mechanics, FFA (Future Farmers of America), and Law Enforcement. and these are just a few of the trades they test. For some trades there are a couple different categories. Carpentry has a team build for the second year students, and a single person build …show more content…
When all the walls were up, everyone split up and went to work on their specific trade. Jake went right to work on the Electrical work, Frank went to work on getting the plumbing set up, …show more content…
I thought we were doing good, I looked at the rest of the guys and they were moving fast on their projects. I got halfway finished with my roof and realized I couldn’t do the other side without someone else holding it. I tried to do it myself because we had wasted so much time already that I didn’t want to take the guys away from their projects. All I could do was either keep trying to do it myself or ask someone. So I chose to ask someone, I asked the whole crew and none of them wanted to help me. Now I was in trouble because our roof was lying on the ground halfway finished. By this point I just decided to ask if anyone else needed help so their project could get done faster and they could help me with my roof. This wasn’t the case, there was more work to everyone's project than I’d expected. So here we were an hour away from the finishing mark and, where is the roof? Still on the ground looking the same as I left it. I continued to ask if anyone could atleast help me get it up, and that finally worked, I was able to get the whole team up on ladders and help me hoist the roof on top of the building. So we at least had something to show
Career and Technical Education (CTE) or “vocational education” provides preparation and skill building for careers. Some high school students will enter the workforce without additional training, but many will receive secondary CTE professional certifications. The goal of CTE is to connect students with growing industries in the American economy and give them the skills and training required for long-term success. However, little is known about CTE. Therefore, students lack access to high-quality secondary CTE.
on Wednesday, I attended a meeting with the team work to see if they got any suppliers to cooperate with them or if they need any help, since they divided the work among them that’s don’t mean they won’t ask for help from the any member. That’s show how those teams work together and all should be connected with each other because if one of the team members didn’t work the whole project will fail and won’t submit it in the deadline.
As you are no doubt well aware, this entire project has been a labor of love for Matt and I. As a group we ran into one road block after another. If nothing else, this project has taught me that everything will not go smoothly, no matter how good the intensions and how to persevere in the face of adversity.
Our group had met several times before deciding on a final design and date to accomplish our Rube Goldberg Machine. We had each agreed to meet at 7:30pm on a Thursday evening, which worked best for the entire group. Two members had to work late, but we were still committed to making the time originally proposed. However, that night as our team began to arrive, we found it difficult to contact our final group member. He was in charge of bringing string, which was crucial to the development of our machine. Instead of getting frustrated, angry, or acting irrationally, the remaining four members began assembling the pieces of our project that did not require rope. At the time, it did not seem to make much difference, but reflecting back we realized how much time was saved by problem solving immediately, as opposed to waiting patiently on the final group member to begin our assembly process. By 8:30pm he had arrived, and we could start working on the remainder of our assignment. By this point, we had made a water funnel, arranged our domino pieces, and taped any pieces of equipment together that made sense for the final product of our machine.
Standing on a stage with over a thousand pairs of eyes watching every second, nerves beginning to fill your stomach, and smiling from ear to ear trying to hide those nerves was what I had to do. All that can be done, at this point, was count down the time left before a single word had to be released from my mouth. The numbers three, two, one, ran like lightning through my mind, and finally, my name was called. I knew this was my time to shine. “Hello, I am Crystal Sandoval, and I want to become one of your next SkillsUSA National Officers.” My life stood still as I felt the nerves suddenly be released and transformed into words. At this point, there was no turning back, but rather share to over three hundred students from across the nation and our United States territories, what SkillsUSA has done for me. “SkillsUSA changed my life, and it has granted me the opportunity to make a difference not only in my life and in other students’ lives, but as well as making the difference in the United States of America.”
Unlike the other forty-two states, the state of Virginia has not opted into the Common Career and Technical Core; however, Virginia does have its on set of standards for CTE programs. The programs implemented are designed to prepare students for “productive futures while meeting the commonwealth’s need for well-trained and industry certified technical workers” (VDOE CTE). Much like other states’ CTE programs, Virginia actively partners with businesses to design and provide high quality, dynamic programs capable of meeting current, emerging and projected labor market needs (VDEO CTE). Currently, CTE programs serve more than 550,00 students in grades 6-12 who can take advantage of 16 different career clusters, of which include Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources, Architecture & Construction, Business & Management, Education & Training, Finance, Health Science, Information Technology, Marketing, and much more. (VDOE CTE). These different clusters help students to design a rigorous and relevant plan of study to advance their career goals. As a whole, clusters seek to:
From 3D printers and computers to laser engravers and tensile testers, our engineering program has had opportunities to teach its students in a professional engineering environment, making them one step ahead of everyone else in their pursue of a career. The importance of CTE can be seen in the academic and professional success of the students as well as the career success of the graduates. Funding and support, like that which comes from the Perkins Act, is key to the success and achievement of the students, in addition to ensuring that America will have a strong and educated future
Throughout the centuries, economy and education grow from apprenticeships and applied learning of the 18th century to a more mechanization in the 19th century followed by just in case learning of the 20th century to the just in time learning of the 21st century. As time goes through each century career technical training was correlated to economic development, and preparing students for job skills and postsecondary education. Throughout the evolution of economic needs, the U.S. Federal and State Government provided funding through educational acts by setting aside money to also prepared students for the workforce. Career Technical Education is breaking barriers on gender, race, and low-income students by deemphasizing vocational as not only specific skill based education, but also as a broad pathway leading to a more prosperous career if students should decide to continue to a postsecondary institution. This shift opened Career Technical Education to all students who are looking for courses that will articulate from secondary to postsecondary institutions. The tech-prep opportunity increased high school graduation rates
They all ran away and start to cause havoc in the city. They both stay at Evan’s house and went into his room. Evan’s mom called Brian mom to make sure that Brian was safe
The first people were the representatives from Holliday Nature Preserve that helped me design the new part of the footbridge. They went down to the worksite to get the blueprints out and more people came to help. After about 20 minutes of people showing up and taking their tools down to the worksite, it was finally time to begin construction. The repair will be extending the bridge 16 feet to the top of the river bank with three 16 foot beams. Luckily there were many adults that could help lift the heavy beams into place because the young scouts wouldn’t be able to lift them on their own. While the adults did all the heavy lifting, I had the younger scouts work on digging water bars into the hill to stop further erosion of the river bank. The task of digging a hole for a 2x4 didn’t seem like a problem for the scouts, so I went to check on the footbridge. Coming down from the hill where the water bars were being placed, I could hear all the power tools like drills and saws being used to construct the walkway connecting the bridge to land. After watching everyone work together and have a good time, I decided to help saw the floor planks for the walkway. For about 15 minutes of sawing and talking to the adults that were taking a quick break themselves, I felt that the footbridge was coming along exactly as planned and I went to check the scouts. I didn’t expect the water bars to take along time to dig and I was right
The topic I chose to do my final project on is hurricanes. The reason I chose hurricanes is because after Hurricane Sandy hit my town and the surrounding towns around me, I wanted to learn and gain more knowledge as to why and how hurricanes occur. I also researched previous hurricanes that occurred back in the 1900’s and I couldn’t believe the damage that was done and the fatalities that were caused even back then. I am first going to discuss the background of hurricanes such as the formation and dissipation of hurricanes, how hurricanes are named, and the damage that they leave behind.
Bass and Miles had the camp packed up and everyone on the road home before lunch. Charlie and Danny took turns riding on the horse with Miles, or in the wagon where Angela rode. Cynthia slowly warmed up to her brother after a screaming match witnessed by the entire camp ended with them tearfully clutching each other as Bass apologized his ass off and Cynthia promised to give him a chance.
The carpentry business presents a very harmful affect to our environment and the people that work in the wood industry. The killing of trees is damaging the oxygen our earth needs and also limits resources that can be acquired by people. The earth is already in an inadequate state with pollution and not taking proper care of our surroundings. Also, the wood industry is very harmful to the people that work and inhale the wood particles and dust which can have very fatal effects to the lung and air cage in their daily lives. These factors can be limited if tree cutting were reduced and carpentry workers used less wood, it could also be reduced if trees that were disturbed were trees that were
My project took a little bit of time, sweat, and hard work but was a success in conserving water. My project is a gutter system, that leads to a rain barrel, which collects water for later use, like watering the garden. The reason I built this project was because my garden is under the eaves so the garden is not able to absorb the water when it rains, and this project solves that. The people who helped me with my project are my mom and brother. They helped me cut and attach the gutters to the roof. The water collection system was built at my house, and I had to go to Home Depot for supplies. My mom drove me to Home Depot where I picked up the supplies to build the gutter system. I assembled the gutter system, but most of the structure was a
Making sure a building is built right and safe is just part of the job for a carpenter. Job openings are located all over the United States for carpenters. Without them many buildings would not be where they are today. Carpentry has developed over the years and now there is a great need for them because of the world’s rapid growth.
