Carson Environmental Issues

This is an efficient strategy. It makes her audience want to get involved and preserve the natural resources the environment has to offer. In her essay she describes the devastating effects chemicals have on the environment with such conviction; it might make the reader feel obligated to make changes in his or her own life to help the natural world. Rachel Carson uses an assertive tone to get her point across. She has a one-sided argument and is very aggressive to those who oppose her point of view. She is very effective at stating her opinion to her audience.

Rachel Carson was a famous biologist, ecologist and writer in the the late 1900’s. She is best known for her books, “The Sea Around Us” and “Silent Spring” that both told the facts and findings on research she completed. Rachel Carson was born on May 27, 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania. She graduated magna cum laude (with honors) from Pennsylvania College for Women in 1929. Carson was also involved at the University of Maryland when teaching zoology and spent her summers at the Marine Biological Laboratories in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

The over use of DDT, dieldrin and other pesticides eventually poisoned an entire world of living things. Silent Spring not only recognizes the severity of the chemicals usage but recognizes the effect of substance use on a community. It helped people to look at the whole picture, to look into the future instead of the now. Carson helps to change this way of thinking by offering solutions to the existing problems. She helps to show that nature will take care of nature. Many times the best solutions are the introduction of other plants or animals. For many thousands of years man has been battling nature, when if he took a step back, he would see that if he just worked with it his problems could be solved. Rachel Carson helped many people to see this ideal and is partly responsible for starting the environmental movement that has become so apparent in today's society. There are many people that do not support Rachel Carson's findings about DDT. These people challenge her experiments and say that the results would have been worse had the controls not been manipulated. The direct effect of DDT may be different on all types of animals. Rachel Carson was  an American marine biologist. She was also a well known conservationist. Rachel helped bring awareness about global environmental issues, which lead to started a  movement that was not pleasing to a lot of people. AFter reading this text, we realize that this issue is so big that any action we could take be pointless. To begin with,the situations she describes is imaginary and happened in the past. According to carson, she does not ¨Know of {any} community that has experienced all the misfortunes {she} describes. This means that this did not actually happen. In Silent Spring Ms. Carson brought the adverse effects of a toxic commonly, used pesticide to the forefront of the environmental movement. DDT was being used commercially to treat crops and was destroying the surrounding ecosystem (Carson). She published her findings from experiments she conducted in the early 1950s in Silent Spring. However, it was not an easy piece to have published, especially not in the 1950s. Carson’s work challenged mainstream thought and went on to change it, even in a time when women were not particularly powerful or respected. Environmental movements of various countries have emerged due to different reasons. It is basically due to prevailing environmental quality of the locality.
