Part 1: Group Development 1. How could an understanding of the stages of group development assist Christine in leadership situations such as this one?
Christine must first have an understanding that a group is defined as a collection of people who interact with one another, accept rights and obligations as members and who share a common identity. In Christine accounting group, their goal is to compose a well-written analysis. This 5-member group is a dynamic bunch because of the different mix of personalities. Christine should understand how people relate to one another in groups and the blended personalities that each member brings will be based on their needs to express feelings of inclusion and control are important to the success of the team. With the situation with Mike and knowing off first hand that he is the class clown, is allow him to be creative and be the presenter of their project to the class to show case the teams work. Steve being the business mind, allow him to produce the project plan. By doing this, Christine would draw on each team member’s strengths and a successful workgroup performance.
Part 3: Retrospective Evaluation
Identify, describe, and defend two possible solutions to the primary problem(s).
Christine can talk with Mike one on one and express to him how important this grade is each team member and how important he is to the team. Since it is so late in the game, and Mike has not participated in meetings nor has he done the work assigned, it would be a good idea to present him with the finished product and allow him to present the paper to the class. Now this may set some of the other members off, but at this point Christine would need to point out the obvious facts to the team, that time is no longer on their side and it is important that they all achieve an outstanding mark for the assignment.
