1. Identify and describe the specific issues DeMur encountered in the workplace. Do the actions of other workers at Treton represent discrimination and harassment? What elements of law are important for Treton to consider? DeMur found very clear issues that can relate to Harassment and Equal Employment Opportunity discrimination within his work place. It started when his supervisor was hesitant to grant him days off for a religious event. This event was something that the supervisor did not know and did not understand why DeMur would want to join this religion. The position went to someone who went to the same church as Jenkins. This is again not fair to Maalick who does the job correctly and is fully qualified to take on the position but because he does not go to the same church, it seems that he was denied that role.
4. What resolution to this situation might Judith Dixon suggest? Judith Dixon would come and suggest everyone to take a diversity-training program. Gomez-Mejia, Balkin and Cardy (2012) describe this as a “program that provide diversity awareness training and educate employees on specific cultural and sex difference and how to respond to this in the work place” (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy, p.148). Judith Dixon would also try to take a look at all the positions in the company and see if any type of discrimination was used to fill them. Also, she should also implement Lockwood’s (2005) competencies for diversity management:
• Active, non-judgment listening;
• Willingness to change one’s own concepts about diversity;
• Collaboration skills;
• Experience with conflict resolution and change management;
• Sensitivity towards terms labeling groups regarding diversity;
• Ability to identify diversity issues and understand related tensions;
• Intercultural team building – ability to express respect and appreciation;
• Openness to learning about others who are different;
• Ability to educate others on how to
