Proposition 140 created term limits for assembly members and state senators. Assembly members are only able to serve three two-year terms or 6 years while state senators are able to serve two four- year terms or 8 years (Van Vechen, 32). In his essay “Polarized Parties Are Good for America”, Matthew Yglesias asserts that the two-party system is ideal for America. He begins by stating that polarization is bad for elites, as it leaves little to no room for “self-styled players”. He then suggests that the two-party system is beneficial for voters, insisting that having clearly labeled candidates creates a “menu” that allows the masses to know what they’re voting for from the start. He concludes by stating that the problem isn’t in partisanship, but with the small number of parties. In this essay I will prove that the two-party system is bad for America.

This point is backed up even more by the time members have before they face re-elections, as in the Senate this period is every six years but only every two in the house. It is 2014 and since the beginning of the millennium there has been a major shift in America’s political ideology and demographics, more so than in any set period of time. America which has historically been very conservative, has started to become more liberally made evident by the results of the last two elections. Although America’s government is based on a less centralized system and free market, Americans have seemed to start embracing things like big government and a stricter market. Americans are also starting to think different on social issues such as homosexuality and drug usage. America has also experienced a change in its demographics as minorities like Asians and Hispanics continue to grow while whites are, percentage wise, starting to make up a smaller part of Americas population. Along with a shift in ideology and change in demographics, technology and communication has advanced greatly making the world a much more connected place. Because of this connectivity people are also beginning to be influenced by foreign ideas that are not familiar to most Americans such as universal healthcare. Overall, because of factors such as foreign influences due to technology and changing demographics, America has become less conservative and more liberal.

In the United States we are divided by the left and right side on the political spectrum; even further divided into political parties such as Republicans, on the right, and Democrats, on the left side. These two political parties show philosophical differences through their viewpoints on major topics such as the economy, separation of church and state, abortion, and gun control.

The United States of America is known to have two major political parties. The Republican party and the democratic one. Both parties are based on views and principles being completely opposites of each other. The Republican party is known to be a conservative party, while the democratic party is known to be liberal. Two concepts that are opposites to each other. The democratic party will most certainly convince the majority of the people that it is the ideal party to remain in office because it promotes economic equality, it advocates civil rights and individual freedom, and because it is a liberal party.

Geoffrey Chaucer, the author who composed The Canterbury Tales such as The Miller’s Tale, The Wife of Bath’s Tale and Prologue, and the Nun’s Priest’s Tale. Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales displays remarkable diversity in the genre, source materials, and themes such as sex, money, and centuries-old tradition of misogynist writing. The characters presented in the Canterbury Tales each depicts a stereotype of the kind of person Chaucer would be familiar with in the 14th century England. The Wife of Bath for example, had five husbands and three out of her five husbands, she married were “fair, old, rich, and submissive” while her other two husbands were atrocious (Chaucer 287). While she married her four husbands because they had money and were submissive, she married her fifth husband Jankyn, who was twenty years old and she was forty, married him for love, not for money (Chaucer 294,295). As or more important, Chaucer engages the device of narrative framework, the story revolves around individuals on both religion and story-telling. Of these continuous themes, Chaucer uses the connection between man and wife, saying that it is the most eminent topic, but additional themes such as social class, religion, unite groups of characters function through these tales.
