This area in the book stresses how vital it is working with other agencies or professionals to assist clients with receiving services. (An Introduction to Human Services, Woodside & McClam) The concept of connecting people to services is relevant in my line of work as a probation officer. When individuals are place on supervised probation, they are required by the courts to complete special conditions prior to the expiration of the case. When I began my journey with the Human Services Department at Lindsey Wilson College, I only knew one thing – I knew that I wanted to help people. Since I was a young girl, I have had a passion to help others, but passion alone just wasn’t enough. Passion without the understand of how to use it can actually cause more harm than good. This program taught me how to use my passion and my experiences along with education to help others.
This capstone course assisted in connecting all the material I have learned thus far in the program as well as helped me to identify what skills and knowledge I need to continue working on. The capstone presentation, as well as class, helped me to practice strength-based language and be conscious of how I describe my clients when presenting them to others. It can be a habit to use negative language to describe a problem-saturated story and unintentionally describe a patient’s story in a way that comes off as stigmatizing. This class helped me become conscious and tactful about how I word sensitive circumstances. It was a great experience to present my patient’s case to the class and practice being thoughtful of how I portrayed my patient’s presenting problem to the group.
