Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) are experiencing low retention rates with first generation college students. The students are not graduating within a four to six year enrollment period, and or are not returning after their freshmen year. As the American workforce looks to colleges and universities to fulfill the workforce pipeline with educated diverse workers, HBCUs are in the spotlight to produce qualified minority graduates. Moreover, HBCU’s are looking to refine their methods of inclusion and buy-in, this will in-turn manifest a higher level of retention amongst first generation college students.
While overall college enrollment and graduation rates have risen for all minority groups, there continues to be concerns for this segment of the population, particularly for African American students. Even

The agency I participated at for my ten hours of service learning this semester was the Plain City food pantry. The food pantry is located on 156 W Main St, Plain City, OH 43064. There are many people that run this agency. A couple names are Phyllis and Jane. I participated March 2nd from 9:30 to 11:30, March 3rd from 9:00 to 12:00, April 4th, from 9:30 to 11:30 and April 6th from 9:00 to 12:00.
In total, I spent about seven hours observing the cultural meetings and about three hours interviewing students (one hour each). I was very lucky to find three informing students with different backgrounds, values, traditions, and opinions. Their answers to my questions were very detailed. I learned alot not only from my interviewees but from my expirince as a whole.
Nicole and Jed participated in thirty (30) hours of PS-MAPP training. They completed the course on April 7, 2015.
To end the interview, MacKinnon was asked to give advice on how to get a job in the field. Two key pieces to his advice were, when you apply and go in for an interview to not hesitate to ask questions to the employer. That this is ultimately your career choice, and you need to make sure that it'll be a right fit for you. He also, and most notably stated, that you need to determine what area of communications you want to enter, but to also be open to other opportunities because those opportunities might take you somewhere unexpected but ultimately beneficial.
Campus is experiencing some "struggles" since the last Monitoring visit that took place six weeks ago. The facility stated that between April, May, June 2015 the overall resident admission and release number is between 210-250, with the average daily population number increasing. As a result, the increase is having a direct affected on campus safety and staff morale. The facility has also hired a large number of direct care staff with minimal experience within the last year and the high resident turnover rate and the increase in population numbers has cause some distress among
This opportunity welcomed me into a community fondly referred to as “Black NCSU.” At the African American Cultural Center, I was surrounded by love and support from both students and staff who wanted to see me succeed on campus. Having a community of intelligent and successful black staff members was an escape from the daily exhaustion of being black in a predominately white institution. Each microaggression was fuel for my intense fire to see a change on campus, which was representation. Representation is important because it gives those who come after us the motivation to strive for more: “I am because you are, you are therefore I am.” With this new motto in mind, I applied to be an Orientation Leader with New Student Programs. Fortunately, I was granted a position as one of six other African American students. Knowing how fortunate I was to have this opportunity I used my position as an Orientation Leader to welcome the class of 2020 to the university. However, I will acknowledge my own bias. I paid special attention to students and families of color as I wanted to be a familiar face to inform them of spaces for black students. I was further able to reinforce this familiarity as a Multicultural Symposium Counselor through Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA). MSA gave me a platform, a voice, to reach younger students of color and pass on the message of
