Company and Manager Background Maurices was founded in 1931 by Maurice Labovitz and is now owned by Ascena Retail. Ascena Retail also owns Dressbarn, Lane Bryant, Catherines, and Justice. Maurices was started as a small women’s fashion shop in Duluth, Minnesota. Since then it has grown to over 800 stores in 44 states across the country. The home office of Maurices is still located in Duluth, Minnesota. Maurices clothes are for women between the ages of 18 to 60 and range from core sizes, which includes x-small to x-large, to plus sizes (Real girl style). Emily Brody is the Store Manager of Maurices at Harford Mall located in Bel Air, Maryland and she has been a Store Manager for two years. Ms. Brody started out as a Part-Time Sales Associated in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, then moved into the Part-Time Assistant Manager position for 3 months, then moved up to a Full-time Manager for a year and a half, and now is a Store Manager. Ms. Brody said, “I do not know what I’m doing with my life and that is kind of scary.” She said that as of July 31st she is moving back to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to become a Part-Time Assistant Manager. She said she plans on going back to school to focus on getting her Master’s Degree in Business and plans to work at Maurices forever. Typical Workday Ms. Brody’s response to describing a typical work day was that she feels in retail there is no such thing as a typical workday.
