It was during my clinical rotations when I sat through an encounter that felt all too familiar. Across sat a teary mother, an angry father, and a defensive fifteen-year-old boy as they discussed the impact of the teenager’s marijuana use and multiple misdemeanors. As obvious as it would seem to receive professional care in any type of similar situation, that was not always the case for my own family. It took my parents ten years of dealing with my brother’s addiction and depression before they were guided towards the professional help he needed. My parents would often describe those years of feeling inadequate as parents with a lot of self-blame. They are not only equipped to take care of their patient’s medical needs, but they have the interpersonal relationship with their patient to provide an extra layer of care that every patient wishes to attain. I believe these required qualities of a primary care physician are a part of my nature.

I witnessed first hand how educating my parents on my brothers’ lifelong illness changed our lives for the better. I know the importance of education and also how much I want to play a role in educating my patients. During my time in medical school, as a part of a student organization we visited schools, held workshops, and created interactive lectures on the importance of a healthy lifestyle. During these workshops, I witnessed first-hand how poverty, lack of education, and limited access to medical care can affect the overall health. After talking to the patients over time and getting feedback, I felt really empowered when patients reflected and shared what they learned and how they were going to incorporate lifestyle changes. Some patients even lacked many of the resources we are accustomed to, but using their newfound knowledge still felt in charge of their health care.
