Inpatient falls after joint replacement surgeries can cause many complications, prolong hospitalizations and increase healthcare costs. These falls can lead to things such as wound infections and sometimes falls can even require a patient to have a revision surgery. This is especially true in postoperative joint replacement surgical patients. While assessing the orthopedic surgical unit where I work, gaps were found in completing fall risk assessments on patients, which is a requirement. Strategies to prevent falls were not always being followed. Things like a postoperative patient that may require two people to help while ambulating at least for the first day or so was not being done. If the requirement for a two person assist is not

The purpose of this research paper was to examine the latest research and evidence-based practices related to inpatient falls. Falls among the elderly within a hospital setting has increased within the last decade. Inpatient falls have become the second leading cause of death, causing longer hospital stays and indirect costs for the hospital. The research reviewed multiple studies, which discussed the causes of inpatient falls. A few causes included nurses and staff not knowledgeable of current hospital practices, lack of individualized plan of care, and lack of training related to falls. The findings assisted the writer to revise the current fall policy and procedure for Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC). A fall reduction program

The practice project I have chosen to complete for my Capstone is preventing falls on a medical-surgical unit. “Even with fall reduction programs in place, falls continue to be a significant problem for hospitalized patients. Falls are a perennial top adverse event in inpatient settings, occurring more frequently than catheter-associated urinary tract infections” (Nolan 2016, Medscape Nurse, p.1). My unit has experienced an increase in the number of falls over this past year, which has resulted in an extended hospital stays. I will conduct chart audits over the past six month to determine which population has experienced the most falls. Also, at what times did the majority of falls occur. “Patient falls are widely regarded to be nurse-sensitive
Evidence Based Management of Fall Prevention in the Health Care Setting Patient’s fall is an unexpected event, and it is one of the challenges that nurses face in caring for patients. Sometimes, finding answers to why a patient fell could be difficult, but providing a strategic approach to prevent the fall event will improve the existing practice and preserved patient safety. The evidence based practice is the new world which nurses live in through a research and is the best tool for providing quality care for patients. To improve the existing practice for a fall prevention, this paper will examine the effectiveness of the fall preventive measures provided for patients during the period of hospitalization and the process of an health assessment’s visit by answering a clinical PICO(t) question which stated; in older adult patients, what is the efficacy of using fall prevention compared to no fall prevention for preventing fall during the period of hospitalization and the process of health assessment in the primary care setting?
The strengths of UW-River Fall’s program offers many advantages such as The National Association of School Psychology (NASP) approval. The campus is a wonderful fit for me due to size and its community based school system. UW-River Falls values diversity, which I found very supportive and comforting. I picked MSUM, because it has the highest ratio of diversity of students in Minnesota’s universities. The integrity of the university to expect students to be open is important to me. I agree that learning is done best when the student is open-minded to new experiences. The faculty and staff of the university seem to be sensitive and responsive to their students since it’s expected of the students.
he incidence of falls has a large impact in healthcare today, including legal, ethical, economical and safety implications, for patients, healthcare organizations and the community. Adhering to standards of care, and preventing falls assist the nurse, organization and patient in avoiding legal implications from falls. Protecting the patient's’ well-being, providing autonomy, and freedom are ethical obligations the nurse must consider when taking care of patients. Financial implications for falls can be devastating to the patient, as well as the organization and community. The safety of the patient is our number one goal in healthcare, and reducing fall incidence will not only improve patient safety, but it will improve healthcare as a whole.
Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob were intentionally designed alike and have many similarities but some notable differences as well. They were both built in the Allegheny Mountains of Fayette County. The natural landscape and architectural style was described by Wright as “organic” and have a natural feel and style to match its’ surroundings. Both homes are integrated into the scenic and beautiful landscape of the land. Fallingwater sits low in the valley of over the stream, but looks dramatic from further downstream. The house has large terraces, and some of them stick straight out and hang over the waterfall. There are very strong horizontal and vertical lines in the design of the house which resembles the horizontal and vertical lines in the rock formations and other natural features. Fallingwater used cantilevers to hold certain parts of the house over the stream. Some of the house was built with the stones found in the area. The waterfall
One concept that I have learned from the lecture that I have applied to my clinical setting this week was the importance of fall risks. I applied what I learned from the fall lecture when I was in the dementia unit. One of the patients had a high fall risk so whenever she would try to get into her wheelchair I would make sure that I was there to help her into it and I would always make sure that after she was put into bed that the giant mats were placed next to her bed when she was in it that way the patient would not get as hurt if she fell trying to get up from the bed by herself when no one was around.
The study talks about the dilemma associated with hospital falls among aged population. Findings from this article shows that some factors make it easy for patients to experience falls. One of the aspects that causes falls could be from the patients’ medical situation. The author noted that the intake of certain drugs like Benzodiazepine and other psychotropic medications predisposes patients to fall. It was further noted from the study that some drugs used to cure patient’s ailments predisposes them to falls as it alters their physiology which affects their mobility. Suggestion from the study calls for the reduction of these medication that causes falls, as it was noted that its reduction leads to a 47% reduction of hospital falls.
Nurses help to ensure patient safety, which includes preventing falls and fall-related injuries (Quigley, Neily, Watson, Wright, & Strobel, 2017). The general population is at risk for falls and fall-related injuries, more specifically the elderly, 65 and over (Quigley, Neily, Watson, Wright, & Strobel, 2017). Patient falls are one of the top events for hospitals and long-term care facilities due to loss of physical function or cognition (Quigley, Neily, Watson, Wright, & Strobel, 2017). Fall-related injuries are a serious health issue for the elderly population (Quigley, Neily, Watson, Wright, & Strobel, 2017). Nurses make a major contribution to patient safety by assessing fall risk and designing patient-specific fall prevention
