Surprisingly, the internet giants such as Google, Facebook, Paltwalk, You tube, Skype, Apple and AOL are in this mix although they denied any involvement in the program. The US government under the name initiated the monitoring program under the name PRISM. Though the scheme was previously denied to exist, the US government confirmed of its existence June 7, 2013. The Prism project has been in existence since 2007 September and all internet communications through any kind of software can be monitored by this agency from the earliest windows version to the latest. NSA monitors every speck of communication. These includes emails, voice and video chats, …show more content…
Sources indicate that the cost of this surveillance costs about $20 million annually, which is excessively low for such an activity. The effectiveness of this program are yet to be confirmed but the US government maintain that such monitoring is of prime importance to prevent any terrorist activities. So far, the government has not cited a single case of thwarted terrorist activity through this operation. The legality of the operation is questionable thus; the US government has avoided suggestions that the operation is unreasonably searching US citizens. Under the fourth amendment of the US constitution, it is illegal to search US citizens unreasonably. However, this act does not give foreign citizens any protection. The European Union shields its citizens
The NSA PRISM program allowed US Intelligence Services to collect private information of users utilising services such as Facebook and Gmail in order to guard its countries interests.
Quigley explains in his article how a number of well known, governmental organizations have been keeping big amounts of surveillance of the US and other people a secret from the public. They have the capability to seize and search any and all internet and text communications that enter and/or leave the US. The government does not need permission to access anyone’s personal conversations it is a decision based on a group of official people within the government. It can be used against the individual without them knowing
Government surveillance is made with the intent to keep American society safe, usually made in response to major terrorist attacks to prevent future terrorist attacks. After the tragic events of 9/11 the Us government took measures to prevent future terrorist attacks from happening. One major act enacted was the Patriot act.
The age of internet and technology has altered our society and the way that we communicate amongst our peers. A small phone in our pocket can connect us with someone on the opposite side of the country, even the world. We have access to answers for nearly any question and the opportunity to buy almost anything, all in the palm of our hand. So in this new age of communication, the government needs some method to preserve national security. The NSA is an organization which for years has monitored personal communication of its citizens.
The National Security Association (NSA) monitors the communications without warrant or viable cause, except for the threat of terrorist attacks. Allowing the U.S. Government to monitor its people violates their Fourth Amendment right to privacy. Not only is monitoring a violation of right, but the NSA is also keeping

Like the collection of millions of people’s phone records , without their consent or without reason. The NSA has many loopholes, one of which includes Prism, which collects information from Google, Apple, Facebook, Yahoo. Ackerman, Spencer, and James Ball. Whether it is calling someone on your phone or online shopping on the computer, people are more connected than ever to the internet. However, a person might be oblivious to the fact that they are being watched using these technologies. The NSA (National Security Agency) is an intelligence organization for the U.S. to protect information systems and foreign intelligence information. Recently the NSA has been accused of invading personal privacy through web encryption, tracking, and using personal information for their own uses and without permission. The surveillance of the NSA produces unlawful invasion of privacy causing an unsecure nation.
After laying low for about 20 years the NSA was called back into the spotlight. According to Heiligenstein “In 2002 the NSA started a project called ‘data mining’. This was where they were digging through electronic data Also in 2002 George Bush allowed the NSA to warrantlessly wiretap American citizens phones. In 2007 this program would come to light and be dismissed after social pressure.”(P. 21-23) In 2013, Edward Snowden who had worked for the NSA revealed countless documents and stories of the things the NSA were doing with out the American people knowledge. He revealed that the NSA had been gathering million of phone calls, texts and emails without permission. It and it also exposed that the US had been spying on it allies for
Spying on American citizens is now a common method employed by the government striving to protect the nation from terrorist attacks. Nonetheless, since its incorporation, the Act has been controversial as politicians and citizens alike have argued between the need to keep society safe and abusive powers of the government over its citizens. Although, mandated to serve as
The National Security Agency (NSA) is an United States intelligence organization that is responsible for global monitoring and collecting foreign data intelligence. Within the NSA, existed what was called the “PRISM”. PRISM was created to collect private electronic data belonging to users of major internet services like Gmail, Facebook, Yahoo, and so on(Stroud). A successful example of the NSA’s efforts with government surveillance was present in the case of Najibullah Zazi. Zazi’s plan to bomb Times Square and New York’s subway systems, was arguably the most serious threat on American soil since the September 11th, 2001 attacks. The NSA had helped to disrupt Najibullah Zazi’s plot to bomb New York’s Times Square and subways in 2009. Thanks to PRISM, law enforcement were monitoring an e-mail address known to belong to an existing member of Al Qaeda. Zazi e-mailed that email address and unintentionally revealed himself and his plans to the authorities. He was arrested and faced a life sentence in prison. Without this type of surveillance, Zazi could have successfully murdered thousands of American citizens(Sullivan). The NSA proved to the United States that without monitoring, America would have encountered another national catastrophe. Subsequently, government surveillance was immeasurably acknowledged among U.S
In Marc Thiessen’s article “Leaks, Not the NSA Programs, Deserve Condemnation,” Thiessen discusses the NSA leaks from 2013, criticizing Edward Snowden for leaking this information to the public. He states that the criticism of the “warrantless wiretapping” of the NSA spying programs are not warranted, with the claims of violations of the Fourth Amendment being nullified by the ruling of the Smith v. Maryland case. He then list three methods of obtaining information for combating terrorism, which are interrogation, insurgency, and communication monitoring.
On October 4 2001, President George W Bush secretly signed under his full authority, a executive order for “The Program”. After signing the order, the NSA then have full authority to monitor all internet traffic, and phone calls in the United States. After the NSA failed to prevent the 9/11, they set a new goal, which is to detect terrorist, and monitor their
Ever since the American public was made aware of the United States government’s surveillance policies, it has been a hotly debated issue across the nation. In 2013, it was revealed that the NSA had, for some time, been collecting data on American citizens, in terms of everything from their Internet history to their phone records. When the story broke, it was a huge talking point, not only across the country, but also throughout the world. The man who introduced Americans to this idea was Edward Snowden.
Ever since the government began to grow in size, conspiracy theorists who used to be laughed at, once believed the government is watching them through their devices (Oddly like the telescreens of 1984.). However, much to the disbelief of many, except the aforementioned theorists who saw it ahead of time. The government was and has been watching people through their messages online. The way they did this was through 9 of the most popular website firms in the nation. All of this was through a program known as PRISM. The Guardian reports, the NSA formed PRISM, a program which allowed our government to collect search history, emails, file transfers, live
