It had finally arrived. Moving day. I was finally leaving my home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania after five short years and a sort of gloom lingered in the air. Although many teenagers would be excited to reunite with their family, friends, and childhood home, I, however, was frightened of the future. I woke up that morning and just laid there and listened to the sound of the rain pittering against the roof and windows, pattering against the surrounding forest in which I shared many memories. After what felt like centuries of just listening and reflecting, I got up and looked out the window. I looked at my neighbor's house across the field of grass which separated our houses and at the kids who had become like my siblings. I looked at the ice
Chapter 7 Case 7.1 Q1 New Hope Housing likely had strengths related to their employee development program, their effectiveness in housing people in need, and their niche for ensuring individuals who would typically be rejected housing. Some of their weaknesses likely related to their secured funding and current dependence on government funding. Some of their opportunities relate to finding solutions for permanent housing, as this is currently a struggle for the people they serve. Lastly, their threats likely also have to do with their government funding. As budgets change, money is moved around and can impact this organization for the better or for the worse.
I find myself looking over my shoulder every time I step outside my front door. Violence has opened my eyes and destroyed my dreams of peace. When I first moved to Philadelphia from Puerto Rico, I moved into a neighborhood that was full of gangs and drugs. Philadelphia represented a new start, a chance for me to breathe again. I had experienced a tragic shooting right before my ten year old eyes in Puerto Rico; my mom’s best friend was killed, while the murderer calmly walked away. We escaped to Philadelphia, and I thought my days of witnessing horrific violence were over. However, my dreams were shattered like gunshots in the night. One day, while I was napping, I was awoken by a series of deafening pops. As soon as I heard them, I dropped
The reporter was contacted at 2:08pm at 09/01/2015 for additional information. The reporter said they were suspecting abuse, but didn’t specify. The reporter was asked was she suspecting molestation, and she replied that she didn’t want to say something that wasn’t true. The reporter never gave a clear answer to what she was alleging. The reporter said Jessica (teacher) has been very concerned about Harmony. Harmony transferred to Mooreville Elementary on 08/24/2015, and she has been arriving to school late (10:30am). It is unknown how many times the child has been tardy/late. The teacher (Jessica) spoke with Wendy about the victim being late for school, and she said “the child will be on time and they were in the process of moving”. The child has been coming to school not clean (not getting a bath), and Jessica felt as though something was not right. Also, last night (08/31/2015), the reporter said the child did not get a bath. The principal was very concerned about the child and would like for someone to come see about Harmony. The reporter contacted DHS and was told to contact the
Out of State Schooling in Direct Contradiction to Parenting Plans: In Baker v. Meyer, Matthew M. Meyer (“Father”) requested a modification (February 2014) to the original parenting plan in order for two of the minor children to attend an out of state boarding school (one re-enrolling and one enrolling for the first year). Deborah C. Baker (“Mother”) originally objected to both boys going to school out of state, but
The trial took place in Newark, New Jersey. In 1974, two of the witnesses, Bello ‘and Bradley renounced their testimony and confessed of lying in hopes of receiving good treatment from the cops. Two years later, the case was relooked and Carter and Artis were released but only for six months. A second trial took place in the fall of 1976, in which the two men were convicted again and found guilty. A third trial occured in the fall of 1982, as a result of the New Jersey State Supreme Court’s rejection for the appeal. A group of Canadians decided to study Carter’s case because they strongly felt that he was innocent. They moved to the US and became fully committed to help prove his innocence after the summer of 1983. They worked alongside
Introduction Urbanization also known as urban sprawl takes place when people migrate from cities and urban areas to less populated rural areas. This sounds harmless, however urban sprawl has created detrimental environment, social, and health effects. Although this issue is prevalent everywhere in the United States, urbanization is especially common in Pennsylvania. This is a pressing public administration issue because without limitations on urban development, American’s will slowly destroy and urbanize all the available farmland. Tom Hylton, a Pottstown, Pennsylvania native and author of Save Our Land, Save Our Town and creator of the documentary, Saving Pennsylvania, dissects the effects of urban sprawl and land use in Pennsylvania.
I grew up in Brooklyn, specifically a neighborhood located north-central of the borough. Living anywhere else but the city and genuinely enjoying your experience is viewed as very rare, from a New Yorker’s standpoint. This place of joy and ridiculously high rent has bright lights, cliche tourist attractions and notorious
The time I moved to Pennsylvania It was a beautiful day.I just got home from school, my brother and I walked through the door. We got some special news. That my mom would tell us individually.
Criminalization Reflection: In the article On the Run: Wanted Men in a Philadelphia Ghetto by Alice Goffman, discussed the large increase of imprisonment concentrated in poor black communities. In these communities supervision by police has risen significantly. In some areas like Philadelphia policing increased 69% percent. In addition the heightened number of mainly black men incarcerated has grown seven times in the last 40 years. There is an undeniable correlation between the increase in black men incarcerated and the amount of policing and surveillance in these neighborhoods. For some of these men a citation for a minor infraction or offense is given. Following this is the option of not showing up for their court dates or inability to
Rosewood. The school I'll be attending for the rest of my three years of high school, and to be completely honest, I'm not al that excited. I'm not good at making friends, which usually ends up with me being alone. Last year I made two friends, Isabelle and Roy. That's only because I had to do a group project with them second term, sure they were nice and welcoming but I never talked to them, I'd smile and wave in the halls or exchange small 'hello's' but other than that I was alone. The only good thing I can think of is that I could have a new outlook and not that of -what the school called me- 'Emo' and I'm not. Perhaps moving to Illinois could be a good thing, but if I get labeled a Emo again it's 9th grade all over again. Three days from now I'll be on my way to my new home..
April 1, 2016 my family moved to Lancaster, CA. We had been living in the city of Inglewood for over 12 years and at times it was cool living there even though it was a small apartment. Earlier in the year we started looking on the computer for various locations which we
Compulsory requirement in the Act ” . . .the parent or guardian of every child not less than seven nor more than thirteen years of age shall, in case such child lives within the distance of two miles . . .send such child to school for at least one half of the period in each year during which the school is usually open” Section 89.
Experience in Moving When humans reflect on their lives they often categorize things by their location at the time of the event, grouping their college experience separately from their hometown high school experiences. This association with place causes us to view an unwanted movement as an attack on our personal way of living. I first experienced such an affront when I was in the first grade, my family and I moved to a small town about three hours away from San Angelo. My father wanted to be closer to his aunt and uncle so he seemingly forced me and to tag along for the experience. I didn’t want to move away from my grandparents or my friends, the thought alone would cause me to cry. I had to leave behind all my friends, my family I
What makes Northeast Philadelphia special? Sure, we have well-known schools for high school and college, but that’s not what we are know for. We are part of the city of “Brotherly Love.” We obviously have honor and pride about having that title, but that’s not what is special about us. Sometimes I think, it’s not just the city that’s special, it’s the people who make it special. You may be thinking I’m off my rocker, but I’m serious. A city is a city, nothing too special. People living in the city, making memories, becoming friends, etc makes it special and harder to move on, especially when going far away to a college.
