Effective business strategies differentiate your company in ways that your customers’ value and your competitors cannot easily copy. But to differentiate on the outside, you also need to differentiate on the inside, and the need to differentiate extends to how you execute your strategy (Becker, Huselid, & Beatty, 2009, p. 4). In the case study of Arctic Timber AB: Engineered Woods Division (A), we see how important effective leadership techniques, strategy management, influence and cultural diversity play into the success or failure in attempting to transform an organization. There were both strengths and weaknesses in Bjorn Gustavsson’s strategy implementation of shifting 50% of the Engineered Woods Division to a line of specialty commodities. This essay will examine both the strengths and weaknesses of Gustavsson’s plan. Strengths can be seen in Gustavsson’s plan as there was enough analysis of the internal and external environments that he knew the company needed to facilitate and manage organizational change. He knew that taking an innovated approach to transform the organization into a specialty product would be risky, but was the most viable option to overcome the challenges they were facing in the market. Understanding the skillsets and capabilities of you employees when considering an organizational transformation is key.
