Developing and emerging markets present several challenges, which need to be overcome by multinational Pharma firms. Pharmaceutical managers consider market access to be their most important challenge. More specifically, the institutional voids Big Pharma companies should consider are: • Weak Infrastructure: a lack of healthcare infrastructures and affordability can be expected to be a big challenge: some countries currently do not have well-developed healthcare infrastructures and hence focus on improving access to healthcare for the population (low income base, requirement for lower priced drugs, inadequate infrastructure to support distribution). • Patents and Regulations: legal and regulatory issues are reflected in the …show more content…

It should also create partnership with the WHO, UNICEF, and the World Bank and forms collaboration with local governments. For Big Pharma, having a local knowledge is particularly valuable in order to establish closer collaboration with the local sales force, the local distributors and local operations (local R&D, local manufacturing). Finally, Big Pharma should try to change the market context where it is possible and they have the power to. Industrial policies could be harmful if governments lack the required information and skills; so, first of all, governments should have the right capabilities and incentives to successfully promote pharmaceutical sector. In order to guarantee an effective design and execution of those policies, I suggest working on both the vertical and the horizontal type. On one hand, there is the need to target more pharmaceutical firms in order to have a wide portfolio of medicines, necessary to address a broad range of diseases and to try solving the prioritization problem.
