1LT Giles' performance as an Platoon Leader was exceptional. His platoon flawlessly conducted high-risk detention operations in Camp V the only maximum security facility in the DOD, and were consistently recognized by their commanders and distinguished visitors. His leadership directly contributed to the Joint Detention Group mission, while ensuring safe, humane, legal, and transparent care and custody of over 30 detainees.

My senior year has gone by so unbelievably quickly. It had been only four years ago when I first stood in front of the school a mere freshman. Throughout the years I gained a new experience that either made me a more global citizen or better prepared as an academic student. This year has been no exception and I feel ready enough for what’s ahead.

“Honoring the fallen by helping the wounded.” This is Camp Hope’s motto. Can you image what soldiers go through? Soldiers risk their lives to keep us safe. How can we repay them? I believe one way that we could repay them is through Camp Hope.

Camp Ketcha offers a unique environment for preschoolers to play. At their nature-based preschool, not only do they play inside with the typical toys for the little tikes, they use the outdoors to entertain their students for hours. Usually, when someone thinks of children's toys, legos, barbies, and toy race cars come to mind. But at Camp Ketcha, the children typically are more entertained by horses, gourds, and apple trees.

Holocaust survivors after the war, were not completely done with the suffering. Most lost their homes, belongings, and family to the germans. So when they were released from the camps exhausted and confused, what did they do? Well, most of them moved away or tried to return to their homes. Anywhere they could go to escape the germans, they went. Even after the war was over, anti-semitism still lingered in europe. Despite being mass-liberated, there continued to be violent protests and threats towards jews.

Where did you learn to play basketball, play defense and offense, or be part of a team? There’s a good chance it was at camp, right? We know that camp is not just a place for kids to spend a fun summer, but an excellent setting in which kids can learn life skills that they will rely on long after the camp experience has passed.

The movie begins with Simon Srebnik going back to Chelmno, he is one of the two survivors. He was taken to Chelmno when he was thirteen, his father was killed in front of him, and his mother died in the gas vans. He was known throughout the camp for his agility and his beautiful singing voice. Before abandoning the camp the Nazis shot everyone, including him, in the head. He was left for dead, but was found and survived. Simon went back to tell of the experience he had. He cannot believe what happened as he walks along what is left of the frame of the buildings. “Hello mother, father, this is your Louie talking. This will be the first time in two years that you’ve heard my voice. I am now interned at a Tokyo prisoner of war camp and I’m being treated as well as can be expected under wartime conditions.” As a viewer we can see the look of pure disgust and longing upon Louie’s face. It was evident that he wasn’t eager to read what was prepared for him as it depicted a false perception of what his wartime conditions were truly like. The fact that he had to make it seem like he was well when in fact he was anything but. I am now able to understand that what those in society often herd about their captured soldiers was quite often incorrect. The enemy wanted to portray an image that hid the true conditions and circumstances the American soldiers were subject to. I not only found this film inspiring as it showed the resilience American soldiers had whilst confined in the prisoner of war camps but also found it interesting as it showed the truths of war so vividly in way that could never be achieved through the use of written words. As a result of this film I am able to see how much we owe these men for our freedom, we were never truly able to appreciate the sacrifice made by those men and women until viewing this incredible film. They went through so much to ensure the freedom of many generations to come and if it wasn’t for these men who knows what our lives would be like today.

This year had its ups and downs but I would never trade it for another freshmen year because all of the obstacles form our personalities and life is ten percent problems and ninety percent trying to cope with them so whenever I think I can’t do anything I remember that in my freshmen year, I got first place at state for a pantomime, got second place in Boston for Show Choir, made twice as many friends as I have in my whole life, and managed to keep my old friends in the process. Last year I made it on High Honor Roll all three trimesters. Academic achievement comes easy for some. For others, like me, it requires hard work, effort, and a tremendous amount of time studying.

Many citizens of the United States immediately after the Civil War knew very little of the atrocities of that occurred in the prisoner of war camps. News that their family member was in a prisoner of war camp was usually dreaded by the family of the captured soldiers. While being dead was much worse the families never truly knew what was going on inside the camps. For the Confederacy, many feared Rock Island, but there was a just as deadly camp just north of Rock Island in Chicago. Once the war had ended the atrocities of what occurred inside the prisoner of war camps became apparent. Suddenly multiple fingers were pointed at what was the culprit for such deplorable conditions. The pictures, descriptions, and accounts of what happened inside the prisoner of war camps became a part of not only history but the media as well. Multiple books were written about the prisoner of war camps, several works of fiction reference the prisoner of war camps. Andersonville is almost unanimously regarded as the worst camp for a Union soldier to get sent to. Rock Island seems to be the place that many agree as the worst camp that a Confederate soldier could get sent to. Rock Island is even mentioned in several works of fiction, including Gone With The Wind. In Gone With The Wind the main character Scarlett O’Hara’s sister in law, Melanie Wilkes received a letter telling her that her husband Ashley Wilkes had been captured and taken to a horrible place called Rock Island. Senior year! Every senior is eager for graduation, their making college decisions, taking their SAT tests, getting senior portraits, and looking forward to getting ready for graduation day. Thinking back now, almost every adult told me my high school years would fly by, they were right.

Your senior year of high school seems like the most stressful year of them all. In my senior year my goal is to be accepted into all of the colleges I would like to apply to. I would like to apply to five schools currently. Another goal I have is to work for higher grades this year. By managing sports, work, and school I will become better at time management. Senior year should be stressful, but also fun. My goal is to enjoy my last year with all of the friends I made,

The best Christmas present I have ever received was to go to Space Camp in Huntsville, AL, because it was inspiring, motivating, and fun. It was the best present i have ever gotten. I will never forget my experience there.
