Today’s Oglethorpe University is a thriving intellectual community in Atlanta, Georgia. However, Oglethorpe has survived many trials during its different iterations. From the very beginning, it was challenged by lack of money and interest. When it finally opened, Oglethorpe University was still plagued with financial issues, as well as issues with maintaining a high quality of education. Years later, the university collapsed under the strains of the Civil War and post-war Reconstruction. More than one hundred and seventy five years after its original charter, Oglethorpe’s existence today is a testament to the power of education.
With an endless reserve of new students and a thriving economy to fall back on, theological schools flourished. Seminaries and other Bible-based schools saw record enrollment. New faculty was added and new areas of study were introduced into the curriculum. Most of these schools became part of the evangelical enterprise, with traveling ministers or radio broadcasts, like those of the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Long before the dominance of the Methodists and Baptists in the South, there was another denomination that held a religious stronghold over the region, namely, the Church of England. Virginia’s Anglicans had a history in the colony that could be traced back as far as 1607 to the settlement at Jamestown. Eventually, they would populate west of the Tidewater region and spread along the Atlantic coast. The American Baptist Movement came from England in the 17th century, after the Baptists were persecuted by the Church of England for being dissenting separatists. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, new members were converted and congregations were formed by Baptist preachers who traveled throughout the South, in particular during the eras of the First and Second Great Awakenings.

While attending Oxford, Whitefield was introduced to a man by the name of Charles Wesley who was a devout Christian. Within a space of time Charles managed to convince George Whitefield to join the “Holy Club” consisting of men exercising methods to advocate personal holiness otherwise known as “Methodists”.
