As I have a passion for helping children and an interest for pursuing school social work, I decided to interview my mother’s co-worker, Belle Walker. Belle is an exceptional children’s (EC) social worker for Union County public schools and works directly with students and families who need assistance finding resources to help them succeed in the classroom. Belle is a very passionate person and loves her work. During her undergraduate, she held an internship at a transitional homeless shelter working with families. As she attended graduate school in Illinois, Belle worked in a domestic violence shelter as a counselor during the nights. After graduate school she decided to move back to Charlotte and found a job working with A Child’s Place as a caseworker for homeless families through the school system. She has now been working with Union County public schools for three years and plans to work with the school system for as long as she can because she feels that she has found fitting.

For this assignment, I decided to interview my aunt because she has been a social worker for about thirty years, and has a lot of experience. She attended Dominican college in Orangeburg, New York where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She then went to graduate school at Montclair State in New Jersey where she received her master’s in psychology. After this, she decided to go back to school for her MSW, which she received from SUNY Albany. Since she graduated, the only profession she has worked in is social work, and she is now a licensed clinical social worker. She loves what she does and is glad that she made the decision to become a social worker.

My passion for helping the vulnerable is one reason I ‘am inspired to become a social worker. I also want to be available to provide support to those who have nowhere else to turn. Starting my career as a social worker and working with children and families is where I feel as though I belong. I have the compassion, the drive and the withstanding endurance to make the area of child and family social work my passion. Working with children requires patience, dedication, resilience and so many other trusting characteristics. Relationships within children’s immediate families have a profound impact on their state of being. Becoming a child and family social worker is undeniably tough and arduous work but the reward of seeing families meet their set goals and becoming a stronger more united family unit come to fruition surpasses anything else. When I become a child and family social worker, my job days will be over and my career starts. Going to worker everyday knowing that I’m making a difference will be the best feeling. A great person once said, “It’s your mistakes that make you human, and it’s your humanity that makes you influential.”

I made the decision prior to graduating with my bachelor’s degree in 2013 that I wanted to become a social worker. I have always enjoyed working with people and becoming a social worker would enable me to have a positive impact in individual’s lives. I waited until 2015 to start this journey as my husband had been in the military and I was unable to pursue a Master’s in Social Work (MSW) due to the required field work. However, now that we are permanently settled in Jacksonville, FL I am able to accomplish this dream. I feel that individuals deserve to work with social workers who have a deep desire to create a change or help implement a change in their lives. Every future client has a history, and it is my responsibility to help their future be bright.

Social workers possess an innate set of talents, characteristics and skills that enable them to work as helpers and aid others in recognizing their own skills and abilities. For, as long as I can remember I have always wanted to be a social worker and make a difference in the lives of others. Choosing a career path is the most significant decision one will make in their lifetime. In order to aid me in my selection, I have chosen to do research on vocations that interest me. While selecting an occupation to study, a few jobs caught my attention, such as a substance abuse counselor or a mental health counselor. Yet, after additional research, I decided to pursue the career path of a social worker, There are a few topics within the life of a social worker that I desired information about, from the education and training required, and the work environment, to the responsibilities, income range, and job outlook.
