In mid-April 2000, Sherri Worth was faced with some very unsettling news about Pate Memorial Clinic’s future with a competitor potentially moving into the area. Worth was the assistant administrator at Pate Memorial Hospital (PMH) and was also responsible for the Pate Health Clinic (PHC). A study by the competitor was being done to see whether sufficient demand existed to establish a clinic 5 blocks north of PHC. The two biggest concerns in regards to the new competition were:

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, founded in 1962, is a pediatric treatment and research facility focused on children’s catastrophic diseases. The hospital costs about $2 million a day to run no family ever pays for their child to go to St. Jude. I chose this organization because St. Jude does a remarkable job taking care of children in need. If I ever volunteer at a hospital, St. Jude would be at the top of my list along with Children’s Medical Center.

When most people think of Christmas, they think of family, presents, and happiness. Christmas day in 2012 was very different for Phoenix and his family. At just seventeen months old, Phoenix became a patient at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis Tennessee. He was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma, a cancerous tumor that affects the eyes. Five year old Phoenix had no control over his eyes, and the average child should have full control by age one. After months of undergoing chemotherapy, Phoenix’s cancer was in remission. “Physically he’s doing good, emotionally he’s doing good”, said Pamela. “I know St. Jude is the reason he has both his eyes. I tell everyone everywhere I go, St. Jude is amazing. I know God has to be in the midst of it. I don’t think I would have my grandson if we had not gotten to St. Jude” (Qtd. in St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital).

The mission of St. Jude’s Research Hospital is to advance cures and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases. The hospital cost roughly about two million dollars to run a day, and no family that is in this hospital pays for bills. It is a nonprofit medical corporation, that assists in travel, housing and food. Even if it is located in Memphis, Tennessee, it has treated children from over all 50 states and around the world. It is named number one children’s cancer hospital in the United States.

Cancer, the leading cause of death by disease past infancy among children in the United States, causes an estimate of 15,780 children to be diagnosed with the disease and of that same number, 1,960 will die from the disease in the United States (Cancer in Children and Adolescents ). A variety of cancerous diseases contributes to causes which can end a child's life as soon as it appeared. A leading charity organization, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, has helped push the overall cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% in the last 50 years since it first opened. During hard times in his life and with a daughter on the way; he prayed to St.Jude Thaddeus,“help me find my way in life, and I will build you a shrine”. Danny built St.Jude because he stuck to his prayer and began talking to a group of businessmen who helped him raise money and helped began building St.Jude (St.Jude began on February 4, 1962).

The Roman civilization is often seen as an archetypal empire because of its many achievements and system of order. In ancient Rome, the ideal citizen was considered to be someone who placed the needs of the people above his or her own individual wants. Furthermore, citizens were expected to be duty-bound and faithful to both their community and their gods. Virgil, a Roman author, believed in the importance of denying oneself personal happiness in order to benefit the people as a whole. In his Roman epic, The Aeneid, the importance of sacrificing personal wants and desires in order to pursue goals that will benefit the entire community is woven into the fabric of the narrative and acts as the foundation upon which the story is built. Throughout the entire Roman classic, the protagonist, Aeneas, is depicted as being a duty-bound man who must deny himself personal happiness in order to fulfill his purpose – to travel to Italy and establish a new home for the Roman people. Notably, he must sacrifice his relationship with Dido, the queen of Carthage, in order to continue his journey to Italy. Despite his love for Dido, he values the will of the gods more than their relationship, hence why Aeneas has to leave her. Though Aeneas’ actions were necessary in order to ultimately establish a new home for the Romans, his relationship with Dido inevitably suffers because of his choices. Furthermore, Dido suffers more than Aeneas during the collapse of their relationship.
