A CASE REPORT OF TOILET SEAT DERMATITIS
ABSTRACT:
Toilet seat dermatitis is a contact dermatitis involving the posterior thighs and the gluteal region resulting from contact with toilet seats. It was commonly seen with wooden toilet seats. It is more frequently seen on usage of public toilets where harsher cleansers are used. Here we describe a case of pruritic symmentric erythematous eruption over the posterior thighs and the lower gluteal area in a 5 year old atopic boy.
Key words: Toilet seat dermatitis, contact dermatitis, irritant dermatitis.
INTRODUCTION:
Toilet seat dermatitis was first described in in 1927 by Mackee who stated that it was a form of contact dermatitis occurring on the gluteal area and thighs coming in contact with the

Detergents were used to clean the toilet seats regularly. No toilet seat cover was used.
On examination erythematous scaly excoriated papules were seen over the posterior thighs and the lower gluteal area. These are the areas which come in contact with the toilet seat. No lesions were seen elsewhere. Systemic examination was normal.
A diagnosis of toilet seat dermatitis was made and the child was treated with topical corticosteroids, emollients and antihistamines. The mother was advised to avoid harsh cleansers, to clean the toilet bowl and seat every day and to use toilet seat covers or newspapers to avoid direct contact of the toilet seat with the skin. The lesions resolved completely in two weeks. Figure 1: Erythematous papules and plaques seen over the lower buttocks and posterior thighs.
DISCUSSION:
Toilet seat dermatitis can be an allergic or irritant contact dermatitis. Previously when wooden toilet seats were used, allergic contact dermatitis was seen to the varnishes, lacquers [2] or Sudan stain [5] present in the wooden toilet seats. Polyurethane toilet seats have also been reported to cause allergic contact toilet seat dermatitis due to reaction of isocyanates
The process of toilet training may be considered the most challenging process that parents encounter with their child during the early stages of his or life. Toilet training can be described as an individualized developmental process that all children will progress at their own developmental pace and temperament, not the child’s chronological age. Toilet training should be a natural result of the child’s developmental readiness. Therefore the primary goal can only be achieved when the child is ready and willing. Just like any learning process for a child, including toilet training, it effects the development of the whole child and it is important that the child has the necessary physical, social, emotional, and cognitive skills to begin.
A former plumber, Barney started to modify toilet seats about 30 years ago. It all started when he needed a place to mount a set of small deer antlers. Apparently, the toilet seat lid was just about the right shape, and he stuck the antlers on the lid. And so it began.
For the purpose of this assignment the chosen title is ‘structured skin care regimes based on cleanse, moisture and protect must be seen as an essential components in the prevention of incontinence associated dermatitis’ (Holroyd, 2015). Incontinence associated dermatitis (IAD) (see Appendix 1) results due to damage to the skin. The areas of skin usually affected include the perineum, perianal area, buttocks, inner thighs, sacrum, and coccyx. The damage occurs due to prolonged exposure to any form of moisture. This moisture exposure can occur from a variety of sources or causes –which includes faecal or urinary incontinence, highly exuding wounds, excessive perspiration and peri-stomal skin. The skin becomes erythematous, macerated, denuded, and inflamed following exposure moisture (Beeckman et al. 2011).

Hand hygiene is a general term that refers to any action of hand cleaning. This include disinfecting agent such as alcohol or soap and water. Hand Hygiene ought to be directed by healthcare professionals before seeing patients, after contact with organic liquids, before intrusive techniques, and in the wake of expelling gloves (Burns, Bradley, Weiner, 2012). The WHO offers a slight variety by suggesting five key moments when human services specialists ought to practice hand cleanliness: before patient contact, before an aseptic errand, after natural liquid presentation hazard, after patient contact, and after contact with patient environment. Intercessions included expanding sink or liquor based arrangement accessibility, instruction, and

The patient tells me she noticed a rash on her of right side of her rear end approximately two to three days ago. She said she first felt a sensation before the rash started and then noticed that there were some squishy bumps there. She said it is tender if she touches it. If she is not sitting on it or lying on it or touching it is typically not tender. She has been trying not to scratch it. It does not tend to be itchy. She has been applying a diaper rash cream, but she is not sure if it is helpful or not. She says that she has had this in the past. She recalls having her first episode approximately two years ago and since then has in total, including this episode, had approximately four of them. She has not sought treatment for it before, but as this seems to seems to be continuing, she thought she should come in to have it evaluated. She is otherwise feeling perfectly fine. No fevers, chills, or body aches. No nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. She is eating and drinking normally. She does not have a history of cold sores. She does not have any other unusual skin rashes. She does not have anything similar to this elsewhere on her body. She is currently not sexually active, does not believe that she is at risk for any such illness.
These symptom then develop into a painful purple or even a reddish rash. The rash leads to blisters, that leads to the top layer of your skin to shed. Having the skin be exposed like this, can lead to more serious infections. It can also lead to blindness, damage to internal organs, permanent skin damage, and death. Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis is similar to the Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, in which it also has flu-like symptoms, then develops into a blistering rash. Skin peels off, nails and hair even began to fall out. It is fatal when the person becomes infected. The third skin reaction is the Acute Generalized Exanthematous Pustulosis. This reaction causes many small blisters to show up on the skin, along with a fever. This condition usually settles in about two weeks, but only if the acetaminophen is
Dermatitis is a general term that describes an inflammation of the skin. There are different types of dermatitis, including seborrheic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis (eczema). Although the disorder can have many causes and occur in many forms, it usually involves swollen, reddened and itchy skin. (www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/dermatitis-000048.htm)
I chose my topic because I have a skin condition, and I thought it might be a good idea to research different skin disorders. I have eczema on my foot and it was a very irritable skin disorder to go through. But thanks to the miracle of modern day medicine, all I'm left with is a scar and it is barely noticeable. Since that's my skin disorder I will begin with eczema and work my way down to pressure sores.
The concept of toilet paper is genius. The concept allows us to grab, and rip of a piece without touching the next piece. No one wants to get gross bathroom germs. Common illnesses, like a stomach bug, pass through bathrooms, and fungi like, athlete’s foot, occur in the bathroom from walking bare foot. Everyone gets the stomach bug at sometime, but most think of contracting the disease from being near someone that has it. In fact you get from being in a germ-filled bathroom. Imagine all of the times your mom told you to go wash your hands after you went to the bathroom, it’s because the bathroom can be a gross place. Things like toilet paper help us stay clean and reduce the amount of germs spread in the bathroom. Also, down there, it does a great job. I can walk around freely, after I do my business without worrying about stench, for I know toilet paper did a good job. I personally use Scott’s brand toilet paper, which I highly recommend. It’s very soft, and also very strong.
