PetsMart was founded in 1986 by Jim and Jackie Dougherty. The first two stores were opened in Arizona and named “Pet Food Warehouse.” Shortly after, five more stores opened and were committed to help save animal lives through adoption events. In 1989, the name was officially changed to PetsMart and opened the first full grooming service salon. These stores also incorporated the sales of small animals. By 1993, PetsMart went public on the stock market, and just a year later they opened their 100th store, including pet training. Four years later, their store count quintupled to 500 stores, and expanded to Canada (Fedora 2014). Over the next several years, PetsMart made the transition to PetSmart, working to improve all aspects of the company, especially their product line.
PetSmart is now the largest specialty pet retailer of services and solution for the needs of pets in North America. Currently, PetSmart operates more than 1,400 stores and 200 in-store PetSmart PetHotels dogs and cat boarding facilities in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. PetSmart provides a broad range of competitively priced pet products and in-store services including boarding, grooming and training. These stores are stocked with over 10,000 products and PetSmart is also becoming a leading online provider of pet supplies and pet care information.
