I work hard to achieve good grades and I devote countless hours to tutoring others to ensure their success as well. I work, plan, build, and dream in order to achieve the success God has planned. Sky School is a private coed day school for gifted students in grades K-8, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is a special program emphasis school and is oriented religiously as nonsectarian school. It provides an academic experience for students from kindergarten through 8th grade in small, multi-age classes. Total students are 110 and 32% are students of color. There are 8 homeroom teachers. And the ratio of teacher to students are 1:14, typically 1:12 in literacy classes. Each mixed-age class is composed of approximately 14 children. One would be hard pressed to find a school district that does not think the most important idea is student learning. How schools go about accomplishing this daunting task can vary greatly from district to district. While some schools promote new ideas such as reflective thinking and leadership development, others are simply stuck in the tradition of teaching students the same now as they did 20 years ago. One of the theories in education that is gaining in popularity is that of developing Professional Learning Communities, or PLCs. I will discuss the components of an idealistic learning community, why it is important, and how to implement this into a school district.
