Society defines stress as anything which forces us to change. Through technical terms stress is defined as “a negative emotional state occurring in response to events that are perceived as taking or exceeding a person’s resources or ability to cope.” To explaining stress researchers came up with the “Cognitive appraisal model”, this system works to tell us whether we believe we have enough resources to deal with the situation without becoming stressed. For instance as a now college student those who have had previous experience taking finales in high school can have less stress than those who have not taken it. This is because they have previous experience with taking the tests and learning how to study while those who have never taken one can become extremely stressed over the unknown of the test. Stress is one of the sub branches that is attached to the world of health psychology. Health psychology is a quickly growing branch that deals with the way the mind and body work together. Psychologists that work in the health field came up with the biopsychosocial model. This model explains the complex interaction with biological, psychological, and social factors.

Kelly McGonigal discusses the importance of viewing stress as positive, as opposed to negative, by detailing three specific studies and findings about stress. In the first study, it was discovered that people with a significant amount of stress had a higher mortality rate; however, this was only statistically significant if the subject viewed stress as harmful. If the overly-stressed subject didn’t view stress as harmful, they were actually at the lowest risk of dying, even compared to those with a minimal amount. Therefore, it is important to change a person’s perspective of stress. In particular, McGonigal emphasizes that stress is important for a person’s body: it energizes and prepares them to meet whatever challenge they are facing. Furthermore, it helps the blood vessels remain relaxed, thereby allowing the heart to remain healthy.
When thinking about Evicted and the different chapters we have learned about in class, the first chapter that came to my mind as relating most to Evicted was the chapter Stress and Health. Many topics in that chapter appeared in the book and related to many of the problems that the characters were facing in Evicted. The characters in the book had stressors that affected them in their daily lives, which also caused many health problems in the long run.
Mrs. Mallard was effected with a heart trouble that brought and emotion connection between her husband’s death and her. Her husband died of a tragic railroad accident. I believe her heart trouble was a broken heart because of the loss of her significant other. Her husband friend stood by her side as she grieved over her husband’s death. Mrs. Mallard felling of abandonment made me feel apologetic for her and also a connection due to the relation of feeing a sense of sorrow. Instead of her expressing her feeling; she choose to go to her room. Many people grieve in different ways to cope with the pain and hurt of losing someone. Mrs. Mallard choose to isolate herself from other which is a way someone expresses their hurt. As she locks herself

With the high demand of medical professionals and increasing numbers of people with chronic diseased, there might be a time where one nurse have to over see more patients than normal. Taking care of extra patients than normal might bring some work burnout and prevent nursing professionals from performing their job effectively. A study was done to measure the stress level of nurses working on the oncology department and the effect of stress leading the nurses to consider looking for job in other departments. It was found that 35% of the nurses were experiencing emotional stress and 17 % were depersonalized which then resulted in considering for other opportunities in less stressful departments (Davis S, Lind BK, Sorensen C, 2013). Stress can be experience from many factors such as death of a patient, patient’s family history, severity of patient’s health condition, and emotional attachment with patients. As a nursing professional, one have to witness devastating situations such as death of loved ones. It has been found that death and close relationship with patients and working environment are the main factors causing stress among nurses (Pavlos S et. al, 2016). Despite the fact that nursing professionals have to go through many stressful situations at work and may be in their personal life, how much attentive can they be while performing their nursing duties?
Jennifer is the receptionist and has been with the hospital for a while, but recently something in her life has changed that affects her performance. Patients, physicians, and other staff are complaining about her rude treatment of them. Mark gave her a chance to speak, but Jennifer did not reveal anything. Her supervisor should have another one-on-one meeting with her and should frankly tell her that her performance is declining, and the hospital cannot tolerate her behavior. Her supervisor should ask her again whether there are personal issues that are affecting her and if he can help her in any way. If the hospital offers employees assistance program, the supervisor should provide the information to her and assure her that provided information

Another aspect that scholars understand Nora could be put under all this mental stress of the relationship she was in is to look at it from the effects of being a housewife. “married women’s poor mental health reflects the stresses of a disadvantaged social position- one that is held in low societal estimation, is boring when it involves homemaking only, and is stressful when combined with work outside the home” (Gore 301). Women who were typically unmarried and had no job were at a higher level of depression than women who were married and had a job. The middle ground of women that were married but were housewives had an adverse consistency with depression or other mental health illnesses. At one time or another, most people experience stress. The term stress has been used to describe a variety of negative feelings and reactions that accompany threatening or challenging situations. However, not all stress reactions are negative. A certain amount of stress is actually necessary for survival. For example, birth is one of the most stressful experiences of life. The high level of hormones released during birth, which are also involved in the stress response, are believed to prepare the newborn infant for adaptation to the challenges of life outside the womb. These biological responses to stress make the newborn more alert promoting the bonding process and, by extension, the child's physical survival.
