Sports Medicine. Brendan Read. Soft Tissue Injuries: Soft tissue injuries are the most common injuries seen in sport. Soft tissues are; tissues that connect, support, or surround other structures of the human body. Soft tissue also surrounds organs. Soft tissue includes muscles, tendons, ligaments, fibrous tissues, fat and synovial membranes. Synovial membranes is the soft tissue found between the articular capsule (joint capsule) and the cavity of the synovial joint. For example, cutting your finger on a knife while cooking is classed as a soft tissue injury. Overuse Injuries: An overuse injury is any type of muscle or joint injury. These are commonly caused by continuous or repetitive stress. Overuse injuries are a result of incorrect technique, ill fitting equipment or too much training. For example, shin splints, shin splints are commonly caused by excessive running, mainly of hard surfaces, resulting in pain in the lower legs and shin. Direct & Indirect Injuries: There are distinct differences between direct and indirect injuries, and are not always associated with sports. Direct injuries are caused by foreign objects causing damage to the body. For example, if you fall and extend your arm out in front of your body and you break your wrist, it is a result of an external force and is namely a direct injury. Contrast to a direct injury, and indirect injury is caused by an internal force from within the body or an external force not resulting in direct
