Ensuring Strong Financial Leadership Nonprofit organizations usually come about to help a social problem within its community or nationally. Just like any business there is a need for something and someone comes up with an idea to fulfill that need. If you look at the organization St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, it was started in 1966 by Episcopalian priest Jack Adam (St Jude’s Ranch, 2016). He did not have a background in formal business or finance but he did see the need to help young boys who were orphaned and needed a place to live. Then, in 1970 Father Herbert Ward took the helm becoming the organizations Executive Director until 2000 (St Jude’s Ranch, 2016). During this time St. Jude’s Ranch for Children became one of Southern Nevada’s …show more content…
Schafer and Bell (2005) discuss some of the things a Chief Executive Officer must do in order to provide strong financial leadership. One thing a Chief Executive Officer must do is hire a financial staff that is knowledgeable about not only basic finance practices but those that are specific to nonprofit needs such as the ins and outs of restricted and non-restricted funds and the use of the Statement of Accounting Standard 117. The CEO must also hire an appropriate amount of staff to make sure everything is being done in the most efficient manner and allow for accountability. Schafer and Bell (2005) also talked about following a standardized set of financial practices that help keep the organization in line with everyone else so if new staff do come in they are able to come into a system that they are more than likely familiar with. The other thing that Schafer and Bell (2005) talk about is having a uniform accounting system. To do this an organization must have a chart of accounts which helps keep track of all financials and makes it easy for non-finance staff to interact with. Most of all, whether an organization’s CEO has a finance background or not it is their responsibility to develop that skill so they are able to successfully navigate that aspect of their organization and have a strong financial presence so they are able to lead in that

Before 2012 El Paso, TX never had a children’s hospital. In fact it was the largest metropolis city that did have a pediatric hospital according to (El Paso Childrens Hospital, 2016). This statistic demonstrates the magnitude of having a skilled specialty of pediatric services.
As a CEO or a member of the management team it is important to have a very clear understanding of all the financial documents that are available to them. It is not only their duty but their responsibility to know these documents and finances extremely well because
The non-profit organization I chose to research is St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. This organization was founded by Danny Thomas in February of 1962. Thomas was a show entertainer, who prayed to St. Jude Thaddeus asking for success so that he would be able to repay others. Now, 54 years later, the hospital has over 3900 employees and is world renown for all of their work with children.
As part of an ongoing effort to improve access to healthcare in rural areas, WeCARE Family Clinic are proposing the start-up of our new family medicine practice in Plains, Georgia. The business will be owned and managed by myself, Dr. Ieshia O. Roberts, MD as a sole proprietorship. I will be responsible for ensuring the general health of my patients and creating a viable and profitable medical practice. Throughout the year, my staff and I will work closely with advisors from Phoebe-Sumter Medical Center to get the clinic on a sound financial and operational footing, using this medical clinic business plan as a guiding management tool.
Most nonprofit agencies follow the same management structure. The structure normally consists of a vertical hierarchal structure with the chief executive manager at the helm, and divisional leaders rounding out the strategic leadership team. Since 9/11, then government shutdowns, multiple wars, natural disasters, and the government sequester, the challenge to most nonprofits is to compete for every available charitable dollar. Chief Executive Officers (CEO) of nonprofits must not only be skillful in maximizing the outcomes with fewer dollars, but also politically savvy in vying for monies for federal, state, local, foundation, and private funding sources.
When Zoot Velasco looks at American nonprofits, he sees a sector that is struggling, in spite of limitless potential for innovation and impact. Noting that 22.3% of the country’s GDP is in the nonprofit sector, yet only 20% of such organizations have a budget exceeding $1 million, Velasco hopes to lead a transformation in the industry.

The nonprofit sector faces many challenges that make it more difficult to measure its financial performance. Young (2007) states that the survival of nonprofit businesses depends upon receiving financial funding from outside donors such as donations from charities, government contracts, endowments et cetera, and the necessity for having several different revenue sources is a challenge for nonprofit management. In addition, he points out that securing capital for operating is also much different than in the traditional business world. Fortunately, scholars have provided tools and information that will help nonprofits manage and measure their unique financial performance so they may make informed decisions and guide their organizations to sustainability (Young, 2007).

Recently the Antelope Valley Hospital Foundation (AVHF) marked its 40-year anniversary of supporting the Antelope Valley’s only hospital offering full-service acute care by presenting a donation of almost $1 million.
What makes this type of leadership so ideal for nonprofit companies is the fact that most depend on a board for their growth. Board members or trustees have a few very important tasks when involving a non for profit organization; they are to determine a task and its purpose, select the chief executive
St.Jude Children’s Hospital is a childhood cancer prevention organization that has made a tremendous impact in the fight against childhood cancer all around the world. The founder of St.Jude is Danny Thomas, a famous entertainer. During hard times in his life and with a daughter on the way; he prayed to St.Jude Thaddeus,“help me find my way in life, and I will build you a shrine”. After years of being an entertainer he stuck to that promise and built St.Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee located at “262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, TN 38105-3678”. Danny built St.Jude because he stuck to his prayer and began talking to a group of businessmen who helped him raise money and helped began building St.Jude (St.Jude began on February 4, 1962).
