The Illumination Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 2007 that helps homeless and extremely underprivileged children and families in Orange County, California. The mission of Illumination Foundation is to break the cycle of homelessness in Orange County. The population typical of Illumination Foundation is that of unstably housed or homeless children. Ordinary families are often immigrants who do not speak English. The children do not have access to healthcare and formal education. Their socialization commonly consists of family members and those that are in the same socioeconomic situation as their own. The Illumination Foundation's vision is to help these families via an interdisciplinary effort combining various types of therapy …show more content…
I am afraid that parents of the children will not be receptive to what we are doing, causing little to no carry over once the child is back at home. The lack of carryover will lead to a loss of information and activities taught as soon as the program ends. A concern I have is that a majority of the children and families speak no English, since my Spanish is equally as limited I am concerned about our ability to communicate. I hope to find ways to communicate without hindering the educational process. Finally, a worry I have is that the children will reject the gross-motor activities we have chosen, and the language barrier will cause a gap in understanding what activities the child would …show more content…
I also think that they will be hesitant of outsiders and will be hesitant to share much information with us, especially if they are illegal immigrants. I expect little boys to already be getting hardened by their environment leading to the display of aggressive behaviors. I expect the little girls to be quiet and reserved, taking in everything that is around them and trying to process it all to let mom know everything that happened once they return home. I believe that the children will be happy to partake in the community program while at the facility but I do not forsee them talking with their parents about continuing their activities at home. I also assume that most children will not do any of the activities once they leave the facility. Although I have volunteered with this organization before, I hope to gain essential hands-on experience with how to communicate when there is a language barrier. I also hope to get experience with how to make programs for children that will stick with them and motivate them to carry it over in their home lives. I hope to be able to learn how to assess an underprivileged situation and learn the most important factors that should be focused on first. Lastly, I hope to gain a better insight into young, homeless children. As I would like to work with children, in particularly in the school setting. I believe a better understanding of this population will help me when
I plan to seize this immense educational opportunity with intellectual curiosity and maintain a high grade point average as I have done throughout the four years of my high school education of numerous honor courses in order to attain the knowledge to implement an organization to provide a positive learning environment for young children with special emotional, educational and financial needs. Using the knowledge I earn from a college degree, I plan to create a positive
As a sociology major student, I am interested in contributing to the improvement of low-income communities and being a teacher. With this great opportunity, I would be able to learn how to teach and help out low-income communities by providing qualified courses and being a caring teacher. I hope that I can ignite their interest in studying, prepare them for University, and eventually, for society.
Each of us will show we are leaders by being positive role models for these young people by showing them we genuinely care about them and their futures. We represent the service component by taking time to work in an organization that is in need of volunteers. We recognize that this is not a faith-based organization, but we chose to act on our individual faiths by doing God’s work and serving others. We will demonstrate the pillar of learning by working with children from different backgrounds than we grew up in. Also, we will encourage the children to learn through mentally stimulating activities in a fun
These interests and my detail-oriented organizational skills, determination and compassion have instilled within me the goal of a goal career in facilitating international humanitarian aid. My recent involvement with tutoring refugees in Elizabeth, New Jersey has really opened my eyes to the many problems people face daily and given me social consciousness
The Building Block Foundation seeks to reduce homelessness in youth and young adults by teaching them life skills and potential job training. As well, by giving them the tools necessary to make good decisions, and build a future for themselves. We partner with schools, other charities and social services to gain referrals for our program. Young adults are the most at-risk group of homelessness, our mission is help ease their transition into more permanent housing, raise high school graduation and GED rates, and increase full-time employment for youth.
I love learning about different people and understanding their hardships, so volunteering at a social service or a non-profit organization would be an amazing opportunity. Another strategy is to “join a social work organization while in school and seek leadership positions” (University of Tennessee, 2011). Joining a social work organization would be highly fascinating and allow me to learn more about my career. I would love to do both of the strategies given, because I will learn an enormous amount about social
The agency where I am interning is Partnership with Children. “Partnership” as it is called, works to strengthen the emotional, social and academic skills of at-risk children to prepare them for success--academically, socially, and in life. “Partnership’s” programs aim to bridge the gap between those who have a vested interest in working within New York City’s highest-need public schools, and those in need. “Partnership’s” goal is to transform the overall culture of many of the city’s struggling schools by helping students cope with the extreme stress of living in poverty. Helping students thrive in safe and supportive schools that encourage
A bit different from the work I did with the Youth Program, as a Program Coordinator for Bright Futures Charities, I have learned many invaluable skills such as dependability,
After graduating for college, I plan to apply to help serve in the peace corps. I once read in my french class how it one of the United State Ambassadors got to where he was and it talked about how he helped serve in the Peace Corps and how that opened many doors to him because he was not only able to put the degree in college to good use but how he was also able to work with foreign countries helping show that he had the skills and abilities required to work as an ambassador. This is not the only reason that I would like to help with the Peace Corps however, I just want to help people. In the end that is my overall goal and working with the Peace Corps would give me the opportunity to help. To see what people experience on a day to day living
According to recent reports child homelessness, an estimated 2.5 million children are homeless in the United States. Sadly, nearly half of these children are under the age of five. In fact, one in every thirty children is considered homeless and the numbers continue to increase annually (Bassuk, E., DeCandia, C., Beach, C., & Berman, F., 2014) Though many factors contribute to this social epidemic, the high poverty rate, lack of affordable housing and single parent households are the most notable influences nationally. The most vulnerable of the population are African American and Hispanic single mothers with poor education (Bassuk, E.et al. ,2014 ) . These families tend to have low paying jobs, live in dangerous neighborhoods and have unreliable transportation. With limited resources available to sustain economic security, families become homeless and the children suffer the consequences.
2. Loss of culture- Observe children within the centre and see how well they interact with other children and how well they communicate with those of other cultures. Ask parents on what they see at home, whether the child interacts more at home and with other people, what changes can they see? etc. Review policies and procedures relations to cultural diversity to determine whether the
I am a little nervous but also very excited about volunteering. I am nervous because I do not know entirely what we are going to do or who we are going to work with. But, I am excited because I am looking forward to meeting the kids and getting to know them. I know some things about Perspectives because my Uncle works there so he has given me some information, helping me to have some prior knowledge before starting volunteering. My biggest challenge when it comes to serving will be getting there as constantly as I would hope to because with sports, it is hard to have the time every week to volunteer. I hope that through volunteering at Perspectives I will be able to help the children who are there to have fun even though their families are
When I was a child, all I wanted to do was run freely around my neighborhood. Thankfully, I was able to, but not everyone has that opportunity. My career goals have become a little more ambitious – my passion is in community design, wellbeing and physical activity policies, and my goal is to develop healthy, active solutions for all individuals in our community. I am writing this letter in application for the Student Internship with Children’s Respite Care Center (CRCC) to assist the Development and Marketing Department. I have completed 21 credits in the Masters of Public Administration (MPA) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I am keen to gain real-world experience in the nonprofit environment.
make a bigger impact in the lives of the kids that are part of the program as a case coordinator. My job
Professionally my background is in the field of special education and early intervention. There are several skill areas that will allow for me to be a successful candidate in the role as coordinator for the Global Communities program. As an educator I have worked primarily with young students both with diagnosed disabilities and without. In general, being in a classroom setting required me to develop strong abilities in organization, planning, flexibility, attention to detail, and time management. Being a behavior therapist required me to observe and quickly adapt to any situation. Working closely with professionals from other concentrations required me to collaborate and effectively apply different methodologies in my instructional sessions.
