For this assignment, we were asked to choose of our past presentation topics and write and essay to elaborate more on whichever topic we pick. The topic I decided to elaborate more on is the Great Coral Reef of Florida. There are many important aspects to look at other than facts about the Great Coral Reef, but also the effects it is facing as well as how it plays a role in the economy, as in terms of bringing in money for the communities. Each topic that I am going to talk about mainly comes from information found by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

The massive influx of new people leads to a near constant expansion of cities and towns that are filled to the max, making the amount of natural forest in Florida shrink daily. Seacoastlocal.org focuses on “promoting dynamic and sustainable community on the Seacoast through educating about the value of building our local economy and investing in a healthy community, economy and environment” (www.seacoastlocal.org). They have chosen five areas on which they would like to make an impact. These areas are: local business, local food, local energy, local capital, and local arts and culture. Seacoastlocal.org is made up of independent businesses, residents of the Seacoast, and nonprofit organizations all working together. They just recently created a project called the 10% Shift. Undeniably there are thousands of people who live in Orlando, Florida but there is not an abundance of people who were born here (such as me); some have moved here for various reasons: because of the weather and great opportunities that we offer. As a native Floridian, I have seen changes in the community (some good and bad). According to statistics it is considered the 3rd largest city in the world visited by tourist: our major attractions are Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld, and Disney World (which employs 50,000 people). Undoubtedly Florida receives a large amount of their income from tourist trade ($973 billion); and depends heavily on these visitors to return year after year to visit the Sunshine State. CORAL is currently running: field testing runs from June 6, Field observation is then performed to validate the observations made using the spectra of light reflected from the ocean to PRISM. This spectrum will provide a uniform picture of reef condition, and the in situ data, or data that is not exposed to an external environment, will show if the spectrum is accurate (Jet Propulsion Laboratory, n.d.). The nominal operational altitude for the mission is 8.5 kilometers, with a PRISM swath range at around 4.7 kilometers and ground sample distance around 7.5 meters (Jet Propulsion Laboratory, n.d.). This will allow data to be collected in a wide distance, allowing for a high amount of data collection in a short amount of time. CORAL also hopes to influence future use of satellites. It is a new idea to utilize satellites to observe coral reefs, and several other groups, some American and others international, plan to launch satellites that can collect data that, rather than just snapshots, show the way reefs change over time (Slezak,
