BACKGROUND

St. Simons Manufacturing is a regional firm which has employees located throughout the Caribbean. Gail McArthur had worked for the company for eight (8) years. A major part of her role in the company required her to use initiative in making supervisory decisions which were instrumental in the company meeting the production targets of ten of the territories where

Management is defined as the act of getting people together to accomplish desires goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively and it encompasses the disciplines of planning, leading, organizing, controlling and staffing. In the Gail McArthur and St. Simons Manufacturing case study, we find several Management elements which, if identified and rectified, could have changed the final outcome of the account. For the purpose of this discussion we have identified the five (5) major Management issues which are implicitly revealed throughout the case study. These Management issues are: 1. Leadership 2. Motivation 3. Communication 4. Organization and some elements of Control or lack thereof
5. The Process & Implementation of Performance Appraisals

DISCUSSION & ANALYSIS LEADERSHIP

A review of the case study reveals several Management elements for consideration but two of the more key aspects unearthed are those of leadership and motivation. Many persons generally agree on the clear correlation between these two elements and in our case study, one can more accurately identify the negative effects of poor leadership practices on the overall motivation of workers within the work environment.
